Hey guys,

I saw some breaks on here recently that brought back memories of the good ol' days of ripping. Since then I've been longing to open older boxes from when I was a kid. I figured I start a thread and see what older boxes members have opened recently, what they pulled (pics always a plus), and where they found their old packs to bust.


I've been longing to break a box of 1997 SpX. The 36 pack box with 1 card per pack. Anybody know where I can find one?

I've been contemplating a nostalgia rip myself. I was eyeing the 93-94 finest, 94-95 finest series 2, 96-97 finest series 1, 96 and 97 spx. Also looked for. 97-98 ultra series 1 or 2 but no dice.

Every time I am about to buy some I balk and by a nice card. One of those early finest will get ripped soon though.

I opened a box of 96/97 Bowman's Best over the weekend (http://bluffcityboxbreaks.blogspot.com/2015/02/1996-97-bowmans-best-basketball-hobby.html), and it was a great break. It was nice pulling Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, and Shaq instead of, say, Lavoy Allen, Quincy Miller, Jae Crowder, and Greg Stiemsma.

I got it at the LCS for a really good price - I went in hoping they had 98/99 SP Authentic.

Some in the break section is opening 96-97 topps chrome and ex2000! Doesn't get much cooler than this

Brings back great memories. My best hit as a kid came from 96-97 series II. I hit a Gold Iverson and I went nuts. I remember buying my first beckett when I hit it and sure enough Iverson was on the cover of it too :D

That 97-98 really does have some serious potential though

I'd be worried the cards would be stuck together in certain products. I remember opening Ultra back in the 90's and even back then the cards were stuck together.

Within the past ~8 months a friend has opened 3 boxes of 97-98 Finest Series 2 and I've opened one box of series 2, no real sticking issues at all. This could be totally different for the Fleer products, obviously. The protector on the finest cards might be the reason there aren't sticking issues.

I broke a box of 97-98 Bowman's Best not long ago and some of the cards had a weird film/coating on the front of the cards. For the most part, this could just be wiped off. No sticking issues though.

I LOVE the old school wax. I have broken at least one box of the following in the past couple years: 96 SPx, 97 SPx, 97-98 SPx, 97-98 Finest, 97-98 bowman's best, 97-98 chrome, 99-00 gold label, 98-99 finest, 99-00 finest, 95-96 SP, 97-98 Flair Showcase, etc.

Best bang for the buck? 97-98 bowman's best. I've broken at least 8 boxes and pulled 3 MJ refractors (two of which graded out gem mint, so no sticking in this product!) and a host of other nice ones (shaq atomic, ewing atomic, pippen insert, iverson insert, kobe insert, etc.).

I also enjoyed 97-98 chrome (lots of refractors, pulled an MJ refractor out of that one too!) I would love to bust 96-97 skybox (series 1), 97-98 sp authentic, 96-97 bowman's best and a host of others.

That's just ridiculous luck with the 3 mj refractors in 8 boxes.

This past summer I found a box of 97/98 finest series 2 for $100 on eBay for my friend and he pulled the bronze Showstoppers mj refractor. After that point I never saw another box that low. His also came back gem mint.

I opened the same box a couple months ago and it was a complete dud aside from a Gold Duncan Arrivals base. I pulled the 1 in 2 boxes silver refractor but it was a Tony Battie. Only other refract was a bronze Brevin Knight.

But yea, it's fun to open old stuff.

Last year I opened a couple boxes of the 91 UD with Larry Johnson and Mutombo just to take me back and man it was fun!

Yeah I went back and checked it out myself. The stuff you had listed plus I bunch of stuff I was eyeing from 2000-2003 are all of a sudden gone :confused:

Site got completely raided. There were a few things I was considering, all gone. Basically anything posted n this thread was bought. Keep an eye on the rips forum. My bet is if anything worthwhile gets pulled there will be a thread popping up ;)

Mods deleted a bunch of posts because competitors sites were mentioned....Maybe we see these boxes avail on BO? Hopefully... It would be sweet to see a bunch of this stuff in the breaks section!

I opened up a box of 94/95 Topps Finest maybe in the first year I got back into cards, which was a dream come true for me, in one pack I got a Jordan, it was the first card. The back of the card was to me, my heart raced with anticipation..."Finally, after all these years I have the refractor!", I thought to myself. I turned the stack over and sifted through them...at last I reached the Jordan. NOPE. BASE CARD.

I had $173 on those boxes with 1 minute left, it went to 177!! one box sold for 150 not long ago, I should have dropped 205 or something. Could have sold one and broke one for 50 bucks.

I got a box of 1996-97 series 2 ultra coming. I will post the video.

I had $173 on those boxes with 1 minute left, it went to 177!! one box sold for 150 not long ago, I should have dropped 205 or something. Could have sold one and broke one for 50 bucks.

So we broke the 2 boxes of 97-98 Finest Series 1, my box was basically a dud with the best 2 cards being bronze Duncan RC's. Also got a Gold Embossed Die-cut Alonzo, Silver Embossed David Robinson and Silver Olajuwan. The 2 bronze refractors were Tyus Edney and Bob Sura :|

My friend's box was a whole different story, along with a Duncan rc and Silver Iverson, he pulled the Kobe Silver Refractor #ed/1090 ("Catalysts") and a Gold MJ. The Kobe is such a nice looking card, we didn't take any pics/vids of the break but you guys def all know what that beauty looks like.

It's funny that with each box, any type of embossed card that lacked a peel stuck like glue to the back of the card in front of it, no damage to the card surfaces though. I'm assuming that wasn't going on at the time this set was still new, I honestly can't remember. It was fun to break some awesome stuff from back then, and 1 dud box is definitely better than 2.

Hopefully I can get my hands on some other stuff from the 96-99 period, as those were and still are my favorite years of sets.

I opened a box of 96-97 ultra last night. Cards were stuck pretty bad. None of the inserts got wrecked but a lot of the base is destroyed. Got a scoring kings plus....of shareef abdul rahim....ugh. realky fun opening though

I almost bought some unopened packs of 86 Fleer. Saw 4 packs with MJ on the back [stickers]

Couldn't justify the price though. $1k. I really really wanted to buy one. Maybe go for a cheaper price with a non MJ sticker.
