So I have recently gotten back in to Card Collecting. Formative Years - Mid/Late 80's and early 90's overproduced crap. Then I went to college and kind of lost interest. Throughout the 2000's till today, I would always buy a few packs a year from local retail just to see what stuff looks like, but I remained a major fan. In the early 2000's I had a young strikeout pitcher on my fantasy team when he played for the Padres that I thought would be huge - possibly the next Sandy Koufax or Randy Johnson, and I hit eBay to start buying up all the rookie cards I could find.

Then 2004 came and he did what I thought he would. He blew up with an amazing season. His cards went through the roof! Did I enjoy my profit and sell high? Nope I bought more. I got into bidding wars on eBay.

Then the crash came in 2005/2006. I kept buying. Figured I would lower my cost basis when he came back.

Then the NLCS came in 2006 after a trade and he pitched a huge game 7. Interest came back. 2007 was a great year. Did I sell then? Nope I kept buying.

Stupid me. I now have a ton of fairly worthless cardboard with the ink of some middle reliever. If my house burns down, his cards will become ultra rare though!

I present my Oliver Perez Rookie Collection:

Not sure on my worst investment, probably PC MIchael Bowden. I remember offering $125 for a 2005 Draft Gold Ref, and being turned down, now in Auction its probably $4-$8 But I still have a ton of him.

But that Perez Collection is amazing, may be a "Bust" but he is still one of my favorite pitchers.

This thread will go to show there are so many dud prospects out there. Every once in a while there will be a guy like Trout but more often then not all of these "can't miss guys" either end up as average MLB players or never even find their way to the majors. Just think a guy like Christian Yelich has lived up to his potential and become a strong everyday major league player and his prices have DROPPED since hitting the majors. With his recent injury I believe prospectors will be having nightmares about Profar pretty soon.

Although the cost was no where near that of your Perez collection, I hoarded Anthony Young cards in the early 90s because I thought that having a player that had a mlb record that had not happened since the early 1900s(even though it was for losing) would someday generate some hobby interest. oliver haunts me in my dreams

When he was traded to the Mets, I started following them more than my Yankees. reding metsblog everyday, watching every game he pitched. Then when he was released, I stopped following them. While Ollie might haunt you as a met fan for that huge contract and his seeming ability to strike out 8 in the first 4 innings then give up 6 runs in the 5th. He still had 2 VERY strong years for you in 07 and 08.

Not sure on my worst investment, probably PC MIchael Bowden. I remember offering $125 for a 2005 Draft Gold Ref, and being turned down, now in Auction its probably $4-$8 But I still have a ton of him.

It is always fun to watch strikeout pitchers. When he was on and had command he was one of, if not the hardest pitchers to hit in all of baseball. It's too bad he hurt himself punching the wall in the locker room and messed up his leg. The right coach could have fixed him and made him HOF caliber. Instead he was stuck with Rick Peterson in NY. I always wanted to see him traded to Atlanta as they always seemed to get the most out of their talent.

I never had a "prospecting" investment in this guy but Matt Laporta. I traded for a few of his big cards and bought into the hype train. That was a big mistake.

Pretty much. Hell, I only paid attention to Sonny after his first successful partial season in the bigs

The only prospect for whom I have more than a couple cards is Matt Olson, nothing high-end though... and I can't justify to myself getting more outside of a trade.

Rafael Montero for me. Can he still come back? Of course, but I don't see him being big in the hobby as he has went through the "Jeurys Familia effect" - short rookie season, but rookie cards and rookie auto in every single product.

There was a prospect that wasn't a big name at all but dumped about 1k into. Nate Gold. It was after Teixeira was traded and the Rangers were looking for a 1B of the future. He had the build and looked promising but just fizzled at AA. I think he made AAA at one point but was let go.

I'm still sitting on at least $2k in Tyler Skaggs and $1k in Oscar Taveras. Not the slightest bit happy but could have been far worse, ask NC about that. Plus, I still have some hope to recoup at least something for Skaggs if he recovers well. In any event, both of these guys completely cured my of the prospecting itch.

Completely agreed. Schafer had a good stint with the Braves in 2013 when BJ got benched, and it only ended because he fouled a ball off his foot and hit the DL. I still think he just needs a chance to play full-time.

1. You Go Hard.

2. Had I not had my 94-05 hiatus, I would have been that guy with copious amounts of "toe" nash cards in 01.

3. I really dug in to Ryan Braun from 05-07 and still have all of that, could be hella worse.

4. Bought several Humberto Sanchez Graded autos in 06 and at least a dozen Brandon Jones in 08.

I was in the service when Taylor and Maas burst on the scene so I didn't fall victim to them, however I do PC Brien Taylor now. Nothing crazy but I'm almost complete with Becketts listing of his cards. Still love to chase his oddball stuff.

As far as Joyner. He played in my hometown for the Waterbury Angels so I picked stuff up of his for my Waterbury collection.

I'm too lazy to pull them out of the closet but I sunk a ton of money into Andy Marte and still have enough to fill a display case. Sad thing is I could've actually done quite well with his stuff but was being greedy and held thinking he would be the ish. Taught me the valuable lesson that if I still have a prospect any longer than 2 weeks after call-up I've held to long. Other less expensive misses were all 2006. Forget Kershaw, give me the Tommy Hickman's,Stephen Englund's and Kyler Burke's lol. Thank god I had had an absolute Home run in Jay Bruce in between to keep me in the prospect game.

Didn't spend that much, but for some reason I bought a fair amount tot David Aardsma in 2004. I cannot to this day remember why, I don't like the Giants, I don't ever prospect, but yet I felt the need to buy stuff of him.

this is one of several reasons why i never cared for the gamble of prosecuting. I buy Dodger signatures though and don't care if the guy makes it big or never plays a game, as long as he is in the uniform for the card. I have had a lot of fun adding 100s of cheaper certified cards in the last couple of years, but I will miss the occasional Yasiel Puig type player if i don't get there early enough or if I refuse to pay more for fear of a bust.

Right now I can't get myself to buy Urias and Verdugo for anything near what they are selling for and secretly hope both bust so that I can get my $1-2 autographs later! The same goes for Puig. I would like to come back after the shine wears off and add him to the collection.

I had a stack of Steve Karsay and Paul Sorrento rookie cards. I probably put $50 in each which was a lot of money for me back in the 1990s.

Luckily I pulled this, so I'm only out the price of grading it. I still hold on to it as a reminder NOT to ever prospect again. I've been pretty much prospect free since that year.

Ha to be honest I sold out in 2009 to pay for a wedding ring so I didn't lose too bad. Sold a lot of Burgess when he was traded to the Cubs for a great price. I picked up just about all of these after that for dirt cheap. I bought the Burgess red for $30 and don't think I paid over $10 for any of these blues.

Right now I've got a ton of money into Aristides Aquino, Hunter Harvey and Maikel Franco to answer your question

do you know if he is going to play this season? i picked up some aflac autos for a buck a piece. he used to be the big seller when the product first came out.

i have some laportas in a box in the closet. he was supposed to be the next big star.

O.Perez was a pretty good major league for a few seasons.

There must have been an opportunity to sell out (and probably make a few bucks) at some point.

When to sell? Always the toughest question I suppose.

Actually he is still a pretty good major leaguer. With the exception of a few appearances during a 'dead arm's phase, he has been fairly dominant as a middle reliever these last few seasons with Arizona and Seattle.

Middle relievers do not command $$$ though.

If I sold in 2004 or 2007 I probably could have made at least some of my money back, but I was invested heavily and had become such a fan that I bought more high instead of dumping.

So now he is a PC guy for me. I have sold a few pieces to people looking to fill sets or wanting a cheap auto to add to their collection. Its hard for me to part with cards like the 3 gold refractors, when I have $50 into the first I have and over $200 EACH into the other 2...

Hunter Dozier just made none of the top prospects lists and he is already 23...

I have ALL of his high end stuff so when he becomes a total flop I will rival NeedsChapmans Oscar Taveras situation.

Hopefully Dozier won't drink all the rum in the Dominican and put his Camaro on it's roof... side... roof again... side...

Another one for me, but his autos are in a box somewhere and I do not have as intense a collection of is:

Edwar Ramirez from the Yankees. I bought several dozen of his autos after noticing his minor league ridiculous K/9 number in 2007. Unfortunately that ability never made the jump from AAA/AA to the majors.

102 K in 56.2IP = 16.2 k/9!

I started this thread as a reminder to myself with all the money I have poured into 2014 Bowman Draft!

Really? You have nothing to worry about. Even if he has a great year: he is a steroid guy, the weight will come back, and he got suspended for fighting a scout.

Not those guys, though I had my share of them, but this is the guy that cured me. The cat went 4-0 down the stretch for the 89 Phillies with an ERA in the low twos. I bought a few hundred of them. Needless to say, this experience cured me of the prospecting bug.

Yep, I remember prospecting in the late 80s. Of course, that meant just buying dozens (or hundreds) of the same card, and they weren't making cards of Rookie League players just yet.

Adam Miller, Cleveland pitcher. Injuries have derailed his career and he's a reminder about the higher risk in prospecting pitchers, especially high school draftees. So much can go wrong. I didn't lose a lot, but only because I didn't have much to put into him then. Even so, there was at least one good window to sell in as is the case with many prospects.

My "bust" was Josh Fogg. However, I never planned on selling any of what I bought. I still buy things that I don''t have although finding something I don't have is rare.

The most I ever paid for one of his cards was right around $100 for a PSA 10 SPx RC at the peak of his hot streak in 2002.

My biggest "all in" moment was back in 1991 when an up and coming player by the name of Marc Neufield graced the cover of several cards. Granted, I didn't really spend any money on him per se; it was just the fact that I had about 8 of them after opening a bunch of wax. I thought to myself I'd be filthy rich if he ever got to be someone...but in the back of my mind, I always wished it were Todd Van Poppel that I had pulled instead :)

I regretfully have many ... I used to do a lot of minor leauge games ... ALOT . So I would prospect all kinds of guys I saw play and thought had real talent . Not the best idea . Biggest losses on Reid Brignac, Joaquin Arias, Estée Harris, Eric Duncan, and James Houser . Also wasted good cash on Don Kelly, Matt Bush, Eric Hurley and Ryan Harvey . I will call Cameron Maybin a push since I cashed in okay when he first hit the majors with the Tigers .

Greatest prospecting cash ins were Melky Cabrera and Kershaw and Justin Upton .

Currently "Prospecting/Wasting Money On" Dean Green (Tigers) Daniel Palka (Diamondbacks) and Andrew Velazquez (Rays)
