View Full Version : Bryce Harper voted MLB's 'most overrated player' by his peers
TarjetasBéisbol

We need a Bryce Harper thread!! Not the type of voting I am sure any player wants to win, especially since voted on by peers. The kid has something to prove and I think this is the year he must prove it. Second year in a row he has come out on top with Puig once again in 2nd place, although this years margin was wider.

Not overly surprising, considering what his output has been based on both popularity and 'hype.' I'm sure some of that has to do with some ballplayers that don't see him play the game the 'right way' whatever the hell that means.
As the Tim Brown article was referenced, he says where's my ring and gets crushed but Rizzo says we're going to win the Central and because he's a 'nice kid' he gets a pass? It's foolish.
Harper has tons of talent and pending another injury could hit .280 30 100 100 and he still wouldn't get the credit because he didn't run out a grounder that one time. Nonsense.

Who knows better than the players that see him play in person? Have always said he's way overrated. Been there three seasons and hasn't shown much more than being average. After three seasons, the age excuse doesn't hold any merit. That's plenty of time to adjust if you are good. The homers (I mean home runs, not the male chicken gobblers that run rampant when talking about him), are impressive, but Adam Dunn hit a bunch too and didn't do much of anything else. Think he'll go down as an average to good player but never live up to his potential (different from hype)

guy's only like 22 years old, so I think it's really early to say if he's a bust as a player. In fact, all things point to him being a great player in the league in the future. I actually think he'll be a great player. 40+ homerun type player one day. He's going to be 22, and he has like 50 something homeruns already. How many players can say that?
As far as hype? Yes. He got hyped up waaaaay too much. Before he did anything, he was the messiah of baseball. So, I dont blame other players voting on him. Honestly, with those youtube videos of him hitting homerun derby with aluminum bats, sports illustrated covers in highschool, etc etc, he was suppose to be the second coming of Babe Ruth. Yes... some people literally said he was the second coming of Babe Ruth... now that's hype.
Even in fantasy baseball, year or two ago, people were voting him 1, 2 or 3 in the first round... and he hadnt done anything yet. We had all these proven players hitting 35+ HRs and 300 avg guys in the league, but people were picking him over them, like Harper was gonna hit 50 HRs out of highschool.
I think people assume there's going to be a new trout every year. Trout doesnt happen that much. I think harper will be a great player, but wont live up to that enormous Lebron James type hype.
Players need to struggle, get sent down, get sent up again, get used to the league, find their swing, fix their swing, etc etc before they get any good. People seem to forget that Trout was sent down to double A after not cracking .200 avg after a month or something.
With that being said, I think the hype of Kris Bryant is also insane. Again, he hasnt done a thing yet. We havent seen him go through a slump (and trust me, he will have many slumps), or see how he handles injuries (he's a big awkward guy... 6'4" or something playing infield), or see how he handles the long grueling season in the big league. He also hasnt faced these vultures of MLB pitching.
I think at best kris bryant will be like Stanton. A homerun guy. Oh by the way, kris bryant will be 23, and Stanton, when he was 23, he had like 94 HRs in the big league already. I dont remember stanton getting this much hype.
just saying, sometimes, people see big shoulders, golden smile, overbloated stats in the minors, and go nuts sometimes.

Overrated is that the same as jealousy? I get that there are players out there doing their thing and posting better stats than Harper. So what....waaah. What makes Harper so hated is he is young, incredibly talented and brash. I tune in when he is up to bat or on the tv at all. With him we all know anything can happen, including injury. He definitely is considered overrated because whether he is hitting 3 HRs in a 4 game post season or riding pine with a boo boo he is 22 and has the whole world in front of him. Ask any little league kid who they like and guess what, Bryce Harper is the name most commonly used. Love him, hate him, who cares. He is good for the sport and has the talent to back it up. To all those 29 year old voters who spent 5-6 years in the minors and have statistically been better than Harper since he has been in the league it's easy to see why they would vote him the most overrated. I bet you ask that same player if they could be 22 and accomplish what Harper has already and switch places the answer would be yes! How many people said LeBron James was overrated and how many years did they say it? Until he won a championship and even to this day people call LeBron overrated. It's ok to not like someone but I guess a kid who can compete, excel, and flat out ball in the majors at 19 is overrated. I can only wish that my sons can someday be overrated in the MLB as well...At least Kris Bryant can start taking some of the Harper heat. I mean if your not Trout your not good. Overrated at 22 with 3 years down, two time all star and rookie of the year. Overrated at 22? Wowwww, I'm 45 and it just makes no sense. If you put on a MLB jersey and make any squad guess what kid, you are not overrated. You are an elite gifted athlete and do your thing!

According to FanGraphs, in the five seasons 2010-14, Jeter was tied for 164th among position players with Cameron Maybin, Brian Dozier and Welington Castillo, despite playing 300+ games more than the latter. Slightly worse than Danny Espinosa but a tad better than John Buck. Great career or not, he provided little value during that time span. FanGraphs must be haters too!

People and players dislike like him.. He is brash cocky and kind of jerky...
He's a kid acting like he owns the place... Lots of dislike...
But If he does not miss 100 games because of 2 freak injuries...
He would be close to 500 hits at 22....
Think about that... 1/6 of the way to 3000 at 22.....
Crazy...
He needs to play 150 games this year... If he gets hurt again and misses 50 games...
Then I see this being a problem... But over rated ... Not really.. Disliked yes..

I just don't see it. I see people saying give him time, he's still young and will progress, but I never see anyone saying he's amazing and currently one of the best in the league. The anti-hype on Harper is more confounding than the actual hype, IMO.

In that article, the link that it leads to is a joke! Calling somebody "the chosen one" at an age of 16 is beyond ridiculous. The hype was oh too real and living up to that is basically next to impossible for him. Was he overrated? Yes. Is he know? Not sure, though can't see him ever really putting up big big stats. Either you can do it and be a superstar against your competition, or you can't. Pujols did it at a young age. The same with Griffey Jr. Harper hasn't. The guy has been a bust so far. One day the homers are going to wake up and realize Bryce Harper is a product of mainstream media hype and propaganda that is never going to be what he was projected as. I didn't say anything wrong. I didn't do anything wrong. I posted my opinion of Harper, just like everyone else has. I posted an article talking about a young Clint Hurdle and how I seen he and Harper's rise in comparison up to this point. Others agreed with me.
Now, I ask that you please get off of my back. I am not going to tolerate it. I don't need "mommy" as you call it. I have flattened plenty of noses in my lifetime when they needed put in their place. You can't exactly do that on here, so when a mod needs to deal with a troublemaker, then so be it. I am not a bully, but I don't put up with them either. As others have pm'd me saying, you are one of the bullies on this board who likes to toss your weight around. You may do it to others, but I am not going to put up with it. I will do my best to get along with you, but that depends on if you can leave me alone. I don't follow your posts around stirring the pot with you. No, you didn't hurt my feelings, but I don't see the need to call someone dense because they see a player in a different light than you do.
I never said Harper was Clint Hurdle. I was comparing them both being young "can't miss" players who were portrayed on magazine covers as the next "great". I also showed where a young Hurdle also admitted to his cockiness like Harper has, and how he wanted to work on developing his craft at the MLB level. That sure sounds a lot like Bryce Harper's current situation.
I don't hate Harper, but he earned his title of most overrated by the guys that he competes with. I didn't say it. His peers did. That's telling..
Like I said, some guys never live up to the hype. So far, Harper has not. And to be honest, I have my doubts that he ever will. That is the tragedy in today's world. Some guys get so hyped up by the media that it literally sets them up to be viewed as failures when they don't live up to superstar expectations. I think Harper may finish with a nice career, but no where near what he was projected as.

Yep, some of the old guard sticking together. I get it. Cover for your pal. Go back to my first post in this thread and follow it through up to now. See who started the bull. It wasn't me. All I done was give my opinions about the player who is the subject of this thread. The very thing hundreds of others do on this forum on a daily basis without ever being called out or picked at for such.

I don't care about your opinion of Harper. I just don't see how you can legitimately make the argument that age doesn't matter without your premise or your mental capacity being limited in some way.

You may not care about my opinion of Harper, but that is what this thread was about. I have also been in this hobby going on 40 years, so I understand things a bit better than you may think.
You took my comments about his age in the wrong way. What I was meaning was regardless of age, either you are a superstar, or you are not in MLB. So many use his age as an excuse as to why he has not became, "The Chosen One", as he was touted by the magazine covers thus far.
I get it, some have all of their hopes and dreams built up in this guy and his cards, but so far he has fallen short and even his peers are calling him out for it. And before some claim I am going after Harper, this is the only thread I can recall ever making any comments about him in.

I used to be a Harper basher, but this kid is going to be something special. Younger than most of these new age hype machines and had the best offensive post season performance of any young gunner, including God aka Mr. Trout.
In another 2 or 3 years I could easily see him being a top 10 player, perhaps even 5...so long as he keeps his head on straight and steers clear of injuries (both of which have hampered his growth).

In my opinion my son is the greatest little league player ever. Thank goodness we can all have opinions. I base mine off of his stats and I am biased towards my kid. I have no bias towards Harper but I do know he entered the majors at 19 and has not only been effective he is a 2 time all star. No doubt injury kept him from being a 3 for 3 all star. How is this over rated? I just cannot wrap my head around it. He has handled the boos, the pressure, and the post season. Yes, the post season, where the real pressure is on all players. All this makes him over rated? No scandals, DUIs, late night lunacy. He works hard and wants to win. I wish there were more over rated guys like Harper. From 19-22 I was a starving college student trying to get girls and looking for happy hour. How many kids can take everything this kid has and still be scandal free? He has been booed mercilessly since the age of 16 and keeps on doing and saying the right things. I think he is rated right where he should be. A top tier elite guy who can change games with one swing or throw. Imagine if the Nats manager didn't pull Jordan after 9 and 2/3 of shut out ball for Storen? My guess is Harper makes it to another 7 game post season series where he would have rewritten all the post season records for a kid his age. Yep, over rated is right where he is. Face it Harper...YOU SUCK!

You just like to stir the pot. I can't tell you how many times you try and call me out in a thread when it's not necessary. You need to knock your nonsense off. I am serious. This is more than once in a matter of a few days you have pulled this. I guess you are upset because your buddy got suspended for starting his nonsense with me.
That is what you are attempting to do towards me, and it has been increasing lately. There is no need or desire for such behavior.
Good grief I'm tired of your act. My comments had zero to do with any "buddy" and if you had any sense you would know that. If anything, Veedon and I are rarely on the same page but at least the two of us can talk and debate without either of us being condescending and certainly without crying to a mod. You love to throw your opinion around and talk down to people but the second someone tries to counter your argument you freak out and run to mommy.
You obviously are keeping count but as long as you keep talking like a dick, I'll keep calling you out for it. You're in the driver's seat and can break the cycle at any time you wish. You are so narcissistic that you can't even see that it is you that are starting it. It doesn't even matter that multiple people have told you the exact same thing.
Do not flatter yourself, following you around is the last thing I'd want to do and in fact I try to do the opposite. I usually see your comments and either ignore them or just click back. Way to play the imaginary, 'people pm me and agree with me' crap. Good for you, what is this kindergarten? As for "weight", what does that even mean? I have no pull around here, just an opinion that is as worthless as anyone else's, sorry if you are too delicate to deal with such things.
I am anything but a bully and it isn't a vendetta. I have agreed with you many times and commented on your posts in a positive way many times. I know that is convenient to ignore as you play the victim card though. I like everyone equally but if someone wants to act like an arse I'll tell them so. It just so happens that you do that more than most. You've reported so many people and for such stupid things that mods have actually had to dress you down. Do you really not see that as a problem?
Nice passive aggressive threat as well. I'd love to see you come anywhere near my nose. It would be a mistake you would only make once.

I don't talk down to anyone. This is just a false perception by some of you who are bent at me. I can't make you see it any differently, so what am I to do? I certainly am not going to take your bullying.
I also didn't make any threat. I was just saying that a mod is the only way to deal with bullies on an internet message board, that in person could be confronted in a different manner.
Another thing; No mods have dressed me down. That's another lie.

There's no denying that the guy has talent. In terms of production, his ceiling is as high as nearly any young player in MLB.
The problem with him overall though, is that his production hasn't matched the hype yet. He was labeled a can't miss prospect during his junior year of high school and had nearly the most publicity of any MLB prospect ever. Alot of this was due to the fact that the MLB draft was being publicized more the last few years and the media was looking for a face to feature.
Obviously this wasn't Harper's fault, he didn't ask for the publicity and hype. The problem is that he's only adding fuel to the fire with his lack of humility during interviews. Personally I've found the guy to be slightly arrogant for someone so young and unproven.

I think injuries r gonna do him in. He's had a lot and is 22. Hate 2 see him at 32.
And using his age as an excuse expired 1.5 seasons ago. Griffey, Lebron and Kobe never acted like him even when they were 18 or 19 in the bigs.

In all seriousness, what does the bolded even mean? He rubs people the wrong way so what? He is a model citizen off of the field by all accounts and plays hard on it. Has he made mistakes? Absolutely but nothing egregious. Part of the reason for these poll results go back to the same reasons that he was intentionally hit by Cole Hamels. Sports is a fraternity and paying your dues is a requirement. Vets resent some noob coming in and getting anointed as the greatest thing ever right off the bat. That still hasn't worn off. In reality, a great many of them need to shut up as their complete seasons pale in comparison to what Bryce can do in a partial season.
I agree that the injuries are a concern though. He needs to figure out how to stay on the field for 150+ games. I also agree that regardless of how good he is potentially and regardless of how well he does in partial seasons, the hyperbole should dial down unless and until he actually puts in a full season(s) on par with expectations.

Hmm kinda self explanatoryHis age is brought up all the time as reason for the stupid behavior. They were all in the bigs before him and didn't do the dumb stuff. He's more immature than they were. But yea didn't mean to put him anywhere near Lebron, Griffey or Kobe in talent just age comparison.

So then the consensus says Harper is over rated because he gets injured? So be it...sometimes things are beyond a players control. However, if I read correctly Harper slimmed down, reassessed if diving into third head first up 7-0 is really necessary, and sought out veterans like Jason Werth as to how to handle playing right and avoiding walls in certain ball clubs stadiums. Maybe at 19, 20 and 21 with the Universe waiting for him to put on his cape in his mind he has to do super human feats so we can stop calling him a pompous pampered golden child. No doubt the fans, media, even his coach whom I am no fan of, has all played a small part in Harper trying too hard when it does not dictate he needs too. If Jose Abreu at 27 can garner that hype and have a card sell for $15,000 on what he might be we can all start saying Harper has another 5 years to be Abreu. I get the people who don't like him, I really do. I have just turned a blind eye to what pundits say and base my opinion on his on the field talent and off the field family oriented, stay out of trouble, lay low and perfect his craft attitude. Can people really ask more? I don't see him being a train wreck like Josh Hamilton or an average player like most like to predict. Here is the great news, Harper can only use being called over rated to stoke his competive Fire even more. However without reckless abandon and the assistance of veterans. Have we ever heard any of his current or former teammates say anything bad about him? I do remember Zimmerman having a problem with Bonds and I see the pattern repeating here. He tugs Harper's leash when not needed and says stupid things to needle him. Hey Zimmerman, when Jordan Zimmerman has pitched 9-2/3 of shut out ball and walks one guy due to what everyone knew were very questionable calls you let Jordan finish that game. In football we had Petey not handing to Beast and in baseball putting in Drew Storen to ultimately lose an 18 inning back breaker robbed the Nats of a chance to win the WS and see what else Mr Over Rated may have accomplished in post season. Most over rated manager is Nat's Zimmerman. I still am pissed off that he put in Storen. Was I the only one who saw the move as terrible? Look no further than the year prior against St Louis when Storen blew it again. Can we all agree that having two more 7 game series who have Harper breaking every record for post season HRs by anyone his age? Not only broke but destroyed is my guess...I also like the fact Harper signs for kids but passes up grown men to do so. These greedy slobs trample kids to get handfuls of things signed then talk crap if he doesn't. Sit down plumbers crack and let the kids get an auto...luckily Gio Gonzales mother gave my 8 year old the red carpet treatment. Nothing like being outside locker room getting signed game ball by Strasburgh, Gonzales and Harper complete with nice smiling pics. Too bad Edwin Jacksons auto made it on the ball...oh well, something my son and I can cherish forever.

He was a huge deal at 16 but but 6 yrs later trout stole his thunder.
No, it isn't "self explanatory". I get what the intention was behind the comment but I was looking for examples. Please show me where Harper has acted worse than "Kobe, Lebron, Griffey" etc. What "dumb stuff" are you referring too? Running into a wall because he was playing all out? Jogging out a hit when he had a zero chance of being safe? tricking a guy into trying for second just so the he can try and throw him out? He was successful in that one by the way.
This is twice you've repeated the same generic accusation but put no facts behind it. You may be right and I may be missing something which is why I asked for clarification earlier and am now doing it a second time.
99.9999999% of the population would be doing dumb things left and right if idolized at such a young age and handed millions of dollars. Harper on the other hand has made a couple of harmless rookie type mistakes and carried himself flawlessly off of the field. Is he cocky? Yeah, so what? Almost everyone his age is, baseball phenoms or not.
Yes, Trout "stole his thunder" but Trout has stolen everyone's thunder. That is hardly a slight.

being a bust and being overrated are two different things. Bryce Harper may be overrated right now, but he isn't a bust yet. When (and if) he gets to age 30, we will have a better idea if he was a bust.

This is currently how I feel about Harper. He's certainly not a bust by any means but he just hasn't lived up to the expectations yet...although he has plenty of time to do so.

Not close to a bust.... People just want him to be Mike Trout.. Good luck to anyone trying to do that...
19-21 years old...
2 all star games
1 roy
Played around 2 years and 1 month of games...
AVG 23 hrs 74 RBIs and 170 hits...
If he can stay health for 15 years and NEVER gets any better..
Will end up with 2500 hits and 400 home runs...
Not sure what else a 21 year old can do... Unless your name is Griffey Trout mantle Williams etc...
Injuries... Only issue.. Can he stay healthy... If he does not get hurt and does not miss 100 games..
The guy would have close to 500 hits at 21. 1/6 of the way to 3000
Still has a shot at 500 hits at 22... He's 22 all year... Crazy IMO
Will see..

His card prices are not based on that 23/74 though. Unfortunately the hobby has elevated to Trout numbers or championships, else he's a bust.

I'm a huge Harper fan, I wouldn't call a guy who's been injured a bust, yeah overhyped but so is every player and their mom at this point.

The problem with Harper is Trout is playing with Harper's hype and Harper isn't.

Harper reminds me of Bo Jackson when he was playing. Bo could do everything, looked great on the highlights. You look at the stats, and you scratch your head about how underwhelming they are.

Harper and Trout are the sole reasons I started watching baseball and I am 45. I am that guy who thought football, football and more football. I might tune in to game 7 of the WS in the ninth inning but other than that baseball was just boring. These two "kids" single handedly made baseball exciting for myself and many others. Over rated equals more ratings...:)!
