View Full Version : Why Are So Many Pitchers Having Tommy John Surgery?

I have been really thinking about this because so many players are getting the surgery. It is really starting to get crazy. What do you guys think is causing this epidemic? I personally think that its either because pitchers are trying to throw too hard, or its because when players were younger they were playing year round and not having any time to rest. I just realized how many pitchers had the surgery and I had no idea that they had it. I'm just curious to see what you guys think.

This gets studied and discussed every year. The most common theory is overuse due to year round playing that many of these players do now. It doesn't help that the human elbow was never designed to throw a piece of leather 90+mph.

Most common thought is that it has to do with kids starting to throw the breaking pitches (curveball, slider) at such a young age.

That's what I heard I think ,Steve stone, say. And yea as mentioned about the all year long pitching. In my neighborhood there's this really good lefty pitcher and he would pitch one day in his traveling team, then here in the neighborhood the very next day because he was "eligible". Etc

Pitchers that throw hard breaking stuff are much more likely to end up needing TJ surgery. The velocity of the fastball doesn't have much to do with it.

Are you picking a fight again? I've already told you that I'm onto your strategy of obtaining make up relations and I won't fall for it too many more times.

Lol, you keep using this word and while I always understood the gist of it, I finally decided to look up the true meaning. Yes, yes he does and it is so powerful that garlic won't hold me back. A Panini card on a string around his neck might but not garlic.

The conversion. Kramer has the kavorka that lures the nun and george wants to convert to Latvian orthodox. Watch it!

It's because the pitchers that end up getting Tommy John never cross trained in sports. They usually only focused on baseball all year round. And if they did play another sport, all they did was play the same position in baseball. The same throwing motion over and over again without any change will cause ligaments, muscles, and tendons to wear down.

Same reason car engines go out after so many miles lol. Used and abused. But seriously as it has been stated in some other threads. Pitchers focusing just on pitching throughout the entire year as apposed to only during season and at practices.

They want to be filthy rich millionaires. In the old days when surgery was less successful and salaries were lower, most guys with blown elbows would just retire.

Notice many of the veterans who have made $50M+ in their careers just retire rather than go through the surgery/rehab routine.

The reason I didn't answer when Mets asked is because I was thinking I was missing something. The picture is so obviously Jose that I assumed Mets had to be asking about something else. I think most people forget that he ever played for the Rangers which is strange. The most infamous baseball highlight of his career was delivered in that uni.

Yes, yes it is. Also, expect a cease and desist letter from Tyson's lawyers for uttering that name. He has it trademarked, copyrighted and patented.

I think he has Ebay unfriended me, as I haven't had a message from him in some time. I wouldn't call him a chicken though, he was anything but that. He had no issue coming right at anyone and saying his peace. Say what you will about him but he wasn't afraid to speak his mind and he also wasn't a wuss when the crap came back his direction which it did frequently. I respect that.

Wonder why, they let their kids go out and pitch, Bumgarner threw 142 innings as an 18 year old in low-a.
