View Full Version : Curry value

The value of Curry's cards have blown up, I see. It's about time and I wondered why it didn't happen last year. I've seen his value go up over the years but the increases were relatively marginal until now.
So the question is, is this the time to sell? Those of you who have been in the hobby for a long time, I'd like to hear your input on this. It's hard to imagine his cards going for more than what they are right now, but maybe they do come playoff time? I know the values typically increase by a good margin in the playoffs, but could Curry be an exception due to how high the prices already are?

GS is expected to go to the finals this year by a lot of people so I think that is already baked into the equation with the higher prices. He would need to go off in the playoffs and win Finals MVP and maybe even regular season MVP for his stuff to go even higher

Yeah, his prices have been on the rise this year for sure.
Add another 25% if he gets season MVP and then add another 25% again if he gets Finals MVP and his first championship.

Yes, I still have 98% of what's in my bucket. Pretty tempted to let them go after seeing the skyrocketed prices, though.
I actually saw him during the All-Star break (for the first time since video chat). Happy to report he remembered me in person haha

I always disagree with the MVP bump in prices. There is no way his cards bump up 25% if he gets league MVP. People already know he's in the top 4 in the MVP race as it is. That is basically saying an Exquisite rookie will go from $500 to $600-625 in a day because he's named MVP. It won't happen and doesn't happen.

Just to add, there will be a flood of every card upon the MVP announcement from those who have been buying in anticipation. So scarcity will take a hit.
And not so fast on Finals talk.....there's a team that's finally healthy & awake :)!

Seems fair as he is already like the favorite or or one of the favorites to win MVP. Though it should still make his cards go up in general.

I think there will only be a significant bump if he has some huge playoff games and makes it to the finals. His cards are already pretty high as is.

I think regardless of whether he wins a championship or gets MVP, his cards will continue to go up as his rise to superstardom continues. As we know one of the main driving factors of basketball card is popularity. Everyone pays to watch Curry when the warriors come to town to see him and he is already the most popular player in the NBA based on All Star Votes and Jersey Sales. It helps that he's a really good dude off the court as well and very media friendly.

I agree to an extent, but I do think it depends on the player/situation for the MVP to really affect prices. We all know who is the favorite for MVP during the season, as their prices reflect that (i.e., Curry, KD last year). It's more of a steady price rise throughout the season. But, if you look at Harden's prices right now compared to Curry, they're not even close...but they would certainly get a bump if he were to beat out Curry for MVP, would they not?
I don't think Rose is a very good example as he was a #1 pick and his cards were high to begin with, and yes, they increased over his MVP season, but I think to a lesser extent percentage-wise since they were already so expensive. Let's not forget that at their peak around the MVP season, they were going for insane amounts.

Could use some advice on this again. I noticed no one's really putting up Curry stuff right now on ebay. Is everyone waiting for his value to blow up more with Playoffs success?
If I remember correctly, Blake Griffin cards were going for way more in his rookie year than what Curry's cards are going for now. Is that what people are waiting for? Would just like to hear some thoughts on this.

I hear this. I also don't want to put my stuff up a few weeks early if there's a good chance of the values going up significantly higher soon. Just isn't the smartest thing to do.

I bought probably 300 Harden autographs and 100 Curry autographs when they were cheap $8-15. I've already covered my cost by selling a few dozen. Curry's prices are peaking. Harden still doesn't get the attention.
I won't worry about leaving money on the table when I get over $180 for a Curry Contenders RC that I paid less than $10 for when I still have a half dozen.

People just don't like Harden. I don't think it really matters how well he plays he just doesn't connect with people.
Curry plays for one of the most rabid fan bases in the league and is the people's champ. He lead the league in AS voting in a year most people would probably think Lebron would have been a shoe-in going back home. He really has become probably behind Lebron, KD, and Kobe the most marketable guy in the league. To me he is must see TV...right there with Lebron he is the guy I get most excited to see on the court.

Yessir. I guess my memory fails me in regards to the contenders selling for $10. I don't recall them falling below $30ish.
And yeah, I hear you. I've had them for four-plus years now but at some point, they gotta go if the value goes up as much as they have. Not rich enough to have this kind of profit just sit around forever.

I think a lot of people in here are understating Curry's popularity.
He's the best since Kobe in terms of turning opposing crowds. LeBron has that "oh my god" factor, as in, this guy was created in a lab and I'm in absolute awe of what I'm seeing.
Curry has that "I believe every shot is going in" vibe. When he hits a couple in a row, you never know how many more he's gonna hit.
In short, I don't see his value or popularity dropping unless he suffers a major injury. A case can be made that he's the best player in the league right now. His shooting ability is that great.

It's an incredible talent every single game by Curry. Even his off-games are exciting.
40 points in a huge Playoff Semi-Finals game, goes 7-9 from 3 ... as a PG.
He could probably dribble down the court and go 1-on-1 every single play and have 20-30 3pt makes himself.
But he's unselfish too. His assist number isn't a good value of this. He has so many hockey assists because the team passes so well. Point being, he's willing to give up his own shots and points if it means the team will play better and win.
THAT'S special, especially for someone who is as good as he is offensively. That's a BETTER mindset than Kobe. Kobe always wanted to win, but he wasn't happy not being the center of attention and the main reason.
Curry plays with a passion, confidence, and skillset that hasn't been seen in this league in quite some time.
The thing is, if Curry's skillset was in a larger body ... it would be INSANE. Very similar is Durant, but what's so amazing about Curry is the fact he is a PG and controlling the game and the pace and the emotion/energy of his entire team. He could have a wide open 3pt and pass it to Klay because Klay's open and he knows Klay making shots is better for the TEAM as a whole. That's such a special skill. You can't teach unselfishness. Just look at Derrick Rose. He struggles to pass the ball, and is a starting PG of a contender. Stephen is also pretty sharp when it comes to unforced turnovers except when they're already up big and he tries to get a bit fancy. His ball-control is phenomenal as well.
Point being, this is no surprise. He is one of the most incredibly exciting players I've ever seen play. He's got the skills and stats to back it up, and his team plays the same way.
People love PGs in the 6-1 to 6-4 range because they feel as though they can relate. We all feel like Curry if we play against any serious competition, because they usually have guys all bigger at every position except the PG. So, his popularity is absolutely well-deserved and it's no surprise at all given the player he is. Some people think he's too cocky. Really?! He's the best player in the game right now, the MVP, and his team is the best in the league in the NBA?! I think he has a right to be - he backs it up! He also seems like a great guy off-the-court. A family man and does a LOT for the community, and not only his hometown community like a lot of players. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders. That's why people don't really like Harden ... Harden seems like a tool who cares more about himself than he does anyone else. Same with Westbrook. Amazing players, but collectors like more than what's seen on the court.
Steve Nash retired, and Stephen Nash now took over ;)

So I still have no idea what to make of how his value has or will rise, but one thing appears to be certain: the value has gone up since the beginning of the playoffs.
I sold a chrome refractor /500 about a month ago for $310 (and it took a while to get that offer). I just sold a second refractor for $400. I've also seen a general increase in most of his regular cards. I think the first time his exquisite sold for $900, people assumed it was a shilled price. Whether that's true or not, it appears most of those cards are now going for $850-$900 range. Crazy, since I sold both of my 9.5's for less than that last year.
Just documenting for future reference and something to look back on. I think right now, most ordinary rookie autos of his can be sold for close to $200. Lets see what the update on this is if and when he wins the championship and how the value changes again, if at all.
I continue to think back to what Blake Griffin rookie autos were selling for at their peak. It was more than what Curry's autos are going for right now. At Curry's peak, I'm thinking it's gonna be somewhere in the range of what the Griffins were going for.

I cringe as I recall you picked up my Chrome for somewhere in that range of 30-40% of what it's at now! haha :doh::doh:

We've all done it but we've also made a good amount of money on him, whether it's selling or trading up. The last few months of price spiking allowed me to get me a NT back for the PC.

You should take a look at the PMs we shared about 3 years ago if you can go back that far. I can, and they are hilarious, the price I was willing to move some cards for and your response.

Don't know if they have topped out but I gladly took the $300 for the 1 topps, 2 UD edition, 1 Studio, 1 jumbo jersey /49 2nd year and 1 die cut 49/49 second year.

I think there is more room to grow. I just found 27 Curry UD RC cards at home :flex: and 8 more panini draft. Time to get some grading going his BGS graded cards are cash money!
I did sell his topps chrome gold ref for $80... Atleast there is payback now :)

Hello. Happened to be reading back on some of my old threads on this site and, uh...:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:
I think this will be a fun ass thread to read back on if you're a long-time Curry collector. Just sharing the treasure of our thoughts from 2016
So I still have no idea what to make of how his value has or will rise, but one thing appears to be certain: the value has gone up since the beginning of the playoffs.

Curry is one of maybe 3 active players that can quit today and it won’t negatively effect (affect?) his prices. Now if he can’t get one more ring and this years MVP….

It's MY pain  Sold both refractors for under $500. Incredible. Also sold the gold refractor for $1k and a black border /50 for $200. Good times.

I predicted back around 2015 that he'd win at least 6 rings. MVP/F-MVP/Ring, to me, is a foregone conclusion this year outside of unforeseen circumstances.
Feels like he's in the start of another 3-year dynastic run (at least). It reminds me of when MJ left, came back and won 3 more.
Why am I saying this? Because I think it's still a good time to buy Curry :)!
