I've been collecting sport cards for awhile (and I still do), but decided to make a leap into the non-sport cards after hearing about Star Wars Masterwork. After doing some research & learning, as well as opening 6 cases, I must say I am really loving the sketch cards in the non-sport side.

Even though it's only been 2 months since I've started collecting sketch cards, with the help of many members on the forum (which I will recognize them in each picture as a way of thanking them), I've picked up some really nice cards as part of my personal collection. I will be posting them & my new pickups periodically. Hope you guys enjoy!

To start out, I want to share some of the cards done by one of my favorite artists, Gavin Hunt

Regular/Silver Sketches from Masterwork

I pulled the General Grievous from my first case and absolutely loved it, which led me to the decision of starting to collect Gavin's sketch cards.

Padme Gold Sketches from Masterwork

The Padme is by far my favorite out of all the cards Gavin did, so I was really happy that I was able to pick up this card. Thank you kyle1707!

Wow really cool stuff. I just started as well, it's a lot more fun at the moment then getting sucked into the endless production of mostly crap that Panini/Topps is putting out.

I have never been into Star Wars but I can appreciate that amazing art.

Thank you Chuck & aggie4ever! You can't go wrong with any of his sketch card from this set. I was fortunate enough to pull 2 of them & got some great help from people on the forum (couldn't have done this without them, so thank you to those on the forum who helped me complete this collection). Now I can only hope that people don't jack up the price on me as I try to pick up more of them.

Thank you! It's a nice change to not just get 30-40% return of what I paid for the case (in sport cards). Not to mention, there are many amazing artists with different styles/take on the characters. I am really enjoying it!

Besides picking up some nice sketch cards that were inserted into the packs, I was able to reach out to a few artists to pick up some of their returns and commission them to do a few blanks.

Charles Hall Star Wars Masterwork AR:
I acquired this card online and I will let Charles Hall's amazing oil painting speak for itself

Gavin Hunt Star Wars Masterwork AR & Marvel Star Wars #1 Sketch Cover:
To conclude my Star Wars sketch card collection, I figure I finish where I started with a couple of amazing pieces done by Gavin Hunt (One of them is not a sketch card, but I think it is worth a spot in this sketch card collection thread). The Sith Collage is probably my favorite sketch card in my entire collection (this is by no mean trying to diminish the work of all these amazing artists who have done some amazing work). Even though I passed on it while it was on auction (which I regretted greatly), I am so glad I was able to acquire it through a trade from a fellow member on Blowout. As for the comic book cover, even though I am not a comic book guy, this is Gavin's 1st ever sketch cover (from what I understand) and the artwork on the cover is just amazing, so I couldn't pass on it.

Thank you! I did pull some of these cards and other great sketch cards (that I have traded/sold) from my cases, but I am not this lucky to pull all of them in my cases. This collection happened because of many great collectors helped me on this forum, as well as many great artists put out their best work.

Thanks cpiazzola! I really love her card, especially this one that I picked up (actually got a pretty good deal for the card) & haven't seen any other card except for the one that is on certain popular auction site. It's a bummer that she won't be doing anymore in the 2nd or 3rd release.

Like many others on the forum, I am very much looking forward to the upcoming release of the Hobbit Desolation of Smaug set, it looks like there are some amazing sketches in the set that I would love to add to my collection. But in the meanwhile, I picked up this beauty. Hope you guys enjoy :)

David Desbois Once Upon a Time Sketch
This is definitely one of my favorite sketch cards in my collection, David Desbois is an incredible artist, I love the way he uses colors, it makes the evil queen looks so vibrant and alive. Again, sketch cards were tough in this product (I believe one in every few cases). Thanks to Tim on here, I was able to get this amazing card!

This week will be a big week for sketch card collectors since The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug and Game of Thrones Season 4 are both coming out on the same day. I will have some great APs coming for both sets, but I figured it's been awhile since I posted, so I will share some of my most recent additions to my personal collection

Sol Mohamed Star Wars Illustrated ESB AR
R2D2 is one of my favorite characters in Star Wars. While there are a lot of good sketch cards of R2D2, it is hard to find a great one. Sol did an amazing job capturing all the details of R2D2, I especially love the fact that the red light is coming on in the sketch.

http://i975.photobucket.com/albums/ae232/ec0202/Personal%20Collection%20-%20Non%20Sports/SW%20Illustrated%20ESB%20-%20Sol%20Mohamed%20R2D2.jpg (http://s975.photobucket.com/user/ec0202/media/Personal%20Collection%20-%20Non%20Sports/SW%20Illustrated%20ESB%20-%20Sol%20Mohamed%20R2D2.jpg.html)

David Desbois PSC
David Desbois simply does amazing work on official set & on commission, especially the way he does portrait & uses colors. Padme is another character I really like & she makes an great subject for sketch card. I love the scene of her fighting in the arena in geonosis, so I asked David to do a card based on that scene. I love the fact that the portrait really pops out of the card.

http://i975.photobucket.com/albums/ae232/ec0202/Personal%20Collection%20-%20Non%20Sports/PSC%20-%20Desbois%20Padme.jpg (http://s975.photobucket.com/user/ec0202/media/Personal%20Collection%20-%20Non%20Sports/PSC%20-%20Desbois%20Padme.jpg.html)

The other one is the Flash based on the TV show that came out this past year. This is easily one of my favorite sketch cards I own. I love the portrait of the Flash, the colors on the card (which is why Desbois does best), and the scene of the Flash running at the bottom of the card.

Thanks Matt! I couldn't resist picking up a jam by Desbois/Hall (for a pretty good price too :D). The Flash sketch card is definitely one of my favorites in my collection. It is a good concept, but David's amazing execution made it look so good!!

I have been looking forward to this new Hobbit set, Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug, to come out for quite awhile, the quality of the sketches seem to be pretty good for the most part. I have been fortunate enough to pick up many APs and pack inserted sketch cards, so in the next couple of weeks, I'll be posting about these pick ups. Hopefully you will all enjoy it!

Dan Bergren

I really enjoy the style Dan used for this set by incorporating the Smaug into the border/frame to go alongside with his wonderful portraits. This Smaug is one of his AP. The detail on the Smaug is great & I really enjoy the nice touch he adds by putting some green and red jewel to the treasure pile.

David Desbois

There is really not much to say except the fact that David is an amazing artist! I was fortunate enough to pick up not just one, but two APs, from David. These two cards makes a great set & exhibit what David does best. David does great portrait that captures the character better than anyone I know, especially the amazing details (literally down to the hair). I really like both cards for different reasons, the one with the dagger captures the strong & feisty spirit of Tauriel while the other one have incredible use of colors (which David is really good with) that makes the card very lively & vibrant.

What a first batch of Hobbit cards!!! The Fry is just wonderful - as you say, he's a veritable samurai with a pencil! Both of Carolyn's cards are great, but that Bilbo with the color, what a pick up and a perfect rendition of that scene! The Meeks is amazing, and he's one of the artists I am hoping to pull in my final 2 cases before I turn to ebay, but I doubt I will find one as good as this Thorin! Dan's attention to detail is wonderful, and I love the gems in the card! And Desbois ... to have two of his returns, bravo!! He's at the pinnacle of the sketch card world, and those are two incredible renditions of Tauriel!

Can't wait to see the next batch!

Thanks Matt! I couldn't have this collection without your help. I just couldn't pass up on that Bilbo by Carolyn (especially with the Freeman Autograph having the same picture). The Thorin by Meeks is indeed amazing & his pack-inserted sketches seem to be the same quality with his AP. And you know as well as I do how awesome the Desbois APs are since you also have one :)

Gavin Hunt

The Smaug is the AP that I wanted & it definitely lives up to the expectation :) The detail on the Smaug is incredible & I think Gavin really captures the essence & the feel of the Smaug on this card.

One more update from the Hobbit: DoS set

Mike James

Mike is one of the artists that I discovered because of this set and he has quickly become an artist that I would love to have a nice collection of. I started out with 2 of his AP but ended up with 4, so that should tell you how much I enjoy his work. I like all of them for different reasons.

The Bilbo not only captures a great scene in the movie, but it also has some incredible use of colors to reflect the lighting & the setting.

http://i975.photobucket.com/albums/ae232/ec0202/Hobbit%20DoS%20Sketches/Hobbit%20DoS%20-%20Mike%20James%20Bilbo%20AP.jpg (http://s975.photobucket.com/user/ec0202/media/Hobbit%20DoS%20Sketches/Hobbit%20DoS%20-%20Mike%20James%20Bilbo%20AP.jpg.html)

The Smaug (which is my favorite of the 4), shows Bilbo on the bottom right corner. And more importantly, the use of red/orange/yellow provides lighting that shines on the Smaug is just incredible.

http://i975.photobucket.com/albums/ae232/ec0202/Hobbit%20DoS%20Sketches/Hobbit%20DoS%20-%20Mike%20James%20Smaug%20AP.jpg (http://s975.photobucket.com/user/ec0202/media/Hobbit%20DoS%20Sketches/Hobbit%20DoS%20-%20Mike%20James%20Smaug%20AP.jpg.html)

It's been awhile since I updated my thread. For those of you who looked at it and commented here before, I am sure you noticed that many images have been removed. This is because I've been trimming down my collection over the last 5 months & trying to limit myself on the numbers of pack-inserted & AP sketch cards I pick up. At the same time, I am also focusing on acquiring PSC (Personal Sketch Card) directly from the artists so that I can add characters from other TV/Movie Series I like.

With that said, I love the idea of Sketchagraph that Topps did/does for some of the Star Wars sets, so I decided to try to get something similar done for some of the characters from my favorite shows. I will start by showing some PSC that David Desbois & Veronica O'Connell did for me that I got signed when I attended the Heroes & Villains Fan Fest in San Jose couple weeks ago. They are by far some of my favorites in my collection because they combine two of my favorite things about collecting non-sport cards, beautiful artwork & autograph!!
