I am looking to get a 1986 Fleer RC of the HOFers, besides MJ, who's the second hottest player in the set? Charles? Malone? Olajuwon? Ewing?

A centered Dominique would be the next most sought after card and also one of the toughest.
After that I would say Olajuwon, Barkley and Ewing are the next tier with Drexler, Malone, Isiah, Worthy, Mullin etc behind.

no... I would buy the graded ones, BGS 9.5 (10 centering).

I knew Dominique is a great player and one the most exciting athletes to watch, but he's behind the other HOFers when they come to history ranking. Is population the reason why Dominique is only behind MJ?

I believe there was quality control issues with the Dominique's.

Thanks for the knowledge. The 1988 Michael Jordan Fleer Stickers also have quality issues; I see most of them on eBay are either terribly oc or ms. Who do you think is the third man then? I probably can't afford a DW one...lol...

The 1988 Fleer Sticker MJ is notoriously difficult to find in PSA 10 and sells for big money. I've opened a few boxes of these trying to put together a perfectly centered base set. It's one of my favorite sets of all time. I have about 12 MJ stickers and all are terribly OC.
That said, why pay huge money for something that is only rare because of condition? The card really has no historical significance. The value is only derived from centering issues. I agree that you are much better off going for attractive examples of HOF RCs.

If you're looking for 86 Fleer RCs with 10 Centering, you're going to have a tough time at it. You'll be fine if you're alright with 9.5 Centering, but sellers are basically trying to get a premium for the 10 Centering of those HOFers.

Start with your favourites and move out from there. Prices of PSA 10 and BGS 9.5 have been creeping up quite a lot recently. This was my must have:

Yup yup. I've read that the quality control problem affected all of the 1986 Fleers with numbers that are multiples of 11 (e.g., 11, 22, 33, etc.). I believe that the issue involved those cards being on the right side of the original card production sheets and being affected by the way that they were cut.
Dominique Wilkins (#121) and Chris Mullin (#77) were among that group, which is why PSA 10s of their RCs are worth so much. They are among the best to ever play the game, but their RCs are so condition sensitive that there's a huge premium to get graded gem mint copies.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I made MJ's and KG's as my main collection, and I am willing to spend some money purchasing some other HOFers or future HOFers rookie cards as an investment. I am not relying make money from the hobby, and I don't want lose money either. Do you guys have any other suggestions besides 86 Fleer?

You can't go wrong with a nicely centered Bird/Magic. The 61 Fleer Wilt is another that is worth grabbing in any grade as long as it is well centered. The 1957 Topps Russell won't be going down in price anytime soon. 1996 Chrome Kobe is great for modern.
I also like moderately graded Star XRCs of all the 86-87 fleer guys. They likely will maintain value and could explode if PSA ever grades them. Moderate grades (7-8.5) for most are also quite affordable. High grades are really the only risky bet with these as demand just isn't nearly as strong as it is for the 86-87 fleers.

Yep. All of this. I'm transitioning to vintage as well. I don't think modern stuff will stand the test of time. I recently scooped a 8.5 bird magic rookie and I'm going for a Wilt and Russell next (probably PSA 5-6 range). Also picked up a BGS 9 Kobe Chrome refractor about a month ago.

Wow so you're looking for all 10 centering huh? That will be pretty much the most expensive feat out there if you can pull it off. Heck, even finding them will be almost impossible. The MJ alone with 10 centering goes for 5-7k now

I think post 90's... So far only the two Kobe chrome's, Exquisite LeBron, and Chrome Duncan will stand the test of time. MO

Yeah, I agree with you there. I have a Topps Chrome HOF RC Refractor project I'm working on (Iverson, Nash, Kobe, McGrady, Duncan, Dirk, Lebron, Wade, etc) that I'm keeping for the PC.
Anything post Lebron's rookie year, I just don't see holding value. I'm slowing selling off my other modern stuff in order to pick up the big boys (Wilt RC, Russell RC, Dr. J RC, etc)

Yea if you go Chrome, you have to go refractor. Those are most desired.

In terms of price, the nicely centered nique'. In terms of popularity, I would think Barkley, although Olajuwon's nba titles should put him right up there too.

Thanks! How much do you think a 9.5 Charles's with 9.5 or 10 centering is worth?

In the past few months, there haven't been many BGS 9.5s with 9.5 or 10 centering posted on eBay. The ones that I've seen have gone for $500+.
