Clues to being shilled..any clear signs?

What are the clear signs of being shilled. I have a small understanding of it and was curious are to what are the most obvious signs of being shilled. I'm bidding on a card for my pc right now and it seems that every time I put a high max bid I get outbid by a bigger amount, and then when I bid again I have to put another higher bid to go back ahead. What are the clear signs of being shilled? Any tips or signs will be gratefully appreciated. Thanks everyone.

Shilling is done in increments as well. Ebay also does proxy bidding

That's interesting. Never knew something like that existed. Isn't there a way to guess what the max bid it so someone else can bid to drive the price up?

I see a lot of posts these days about people believing the auction is being shilled. I now think someone is doing this to me? Am I just being paranoid or is this a common occurrence now??

Pretty common, its easy to do and Ebay does nothing to stop it

The last thing a shiller wants to do is outbid you and win the auction. If you keep getting outbid, and then come back and bid again to outbid someone else, maybe you're just competing with other bidders.

That's a good point. It just seems that I'm being shilled is all.

Be smart and don't do it! The worst way to bid is raising the price regularly in increments regardless if you are competing with a shill buyer or a legit buyer.

I have two methods of bidding.

1. Either I put down a max bid and live with it.

2. I wait to the last possible moment (15 seconds left) and make one reasonable bid.

Get used to looking at that red YOU HAVE BEEN OUTBID text for 6 days at a time. Your wallet will thank you.

Check the bid history of the bidder who keeps bidding you up and see what his percentage of bids with that seller is. I got Schilled on a card and the seller won the auction. He quickly offered me a second chance offer at my high bid price as he said the winner did not want to pay. I don't take offers like that and I call the seller out on it.

I did and it says 0%. It still doesn't feel right.
