This thread is a bit premature.

The set has not even officially been scheduled, just announced as a license that Cryptozoic has.

The release calendar in the recent NSU has it listed as "Fall."

There are so many better shows out there right now that could be made into very popular sets such as Vikings, Hells On Wheels, Defiance, DaVincis Demons, Black Sails, etc.... to name but a few that would outsell Outlander to the tune of about 1000%.

Male oriented shows. Outlander is for a different audience. Epic show. I'm in for a case.

Exactly... you named shows for guys...

Although, is there a market for trading cards made for shows for women?

Isn't Vampire Diaries a show for women? I'm drawing a blank on others at the moment, but I honestly think there would be a lucrative market if they could just figure out how/where to connect with it. My entire life as a geek girl I've known more women who would spend crazy money on their obsessions than I have men that would. When the opportunity was there, anyway. Or when it's not there and they can find a way to make it themselves (I totally have a Superboy purse I ordered custom made on Etsy).

And on that note, I'm still dreaming of a Teen Wolf set (okay George? ;)) They've won tv fandom and are in the top four for the fandom awards somethingoranother at SDCC, we can pretend that counts for something!

Two and a half years ago I sent an email (to people much more important than me) listing three properties I wanted to work on:
Arrow
Hannibal
Teen Wolf

Two and a half years later, I still like my list.

See, I knew you were my favorite :D
(Okay, I'll stop campaigning now lol)

Anyway, on topic, I think sketch-less was a good call for this set. I have a ton of people on my personal fb - not my art page - that are crazy for Outlander. I think they'll be very interested in autographs, but wholly indifferent to sketches, as a gateway into card buying.

Agree with this because given my sales, Arrow was pretty solid and women bought my higher end Hobbit stuff. I think Crypto is pretty good at selecting properties that straddle male/female demos - Once Upon a Time, Revenge, Arrow, Supernatural are probably just as desirable for male and female collectors.

Having said that, I wonder if one of the barriers is the gamble nature of boxes/cases doesn't lend itself well to female collectors. My wife loves opening boxes now, but took her a bit to warm up to it just given the unknown and potential to not get anything.

Right? I now own a grand total of 8 auto or wardrobe cards. After 5 years drawing sketch cards, it was Arrow that made me do it :P

It's also possible the gamble is a deterrent... it is to me, for sure. But not being a part of the card community, the fans I've talked to seemed to take the idea of a set in the way that they were seen to the community many years ago - a want for base cards, awe at ANY auto/wardrobe stuff and the idea of the main stars as something else entirely rather than a justification for buying.

Pretty arrogant for a new guy. Your opinion is noted but you have no idea about the popularity of the show. For example, Once Upon a Time. I'm still kicking myself for not ordering a single box. I won't make the same mistake with The Outlander or The Orphan Black.

You are entitled to opinions, but they're not facts. In tone, you've been the only one acting as though you have difinitive facts and any other opinion is stupid. Answering reasoned dissent with the equivalent of "no" is about as childish as pretending that being called on the attitude you are presenting is somehow censorship.

Cryptozoic has been pretty good at choosing oddball winners so the only real truth is that we have to wait and see.

Man are we ever gonna see a small glimpse of a preview for this set? I know it got pushed back but good grief.

Based on how they have handled recent releases (Arrow, PD and SoA) and the next 3 releases - Fringe, Hobbit and Supernatural, it doesn't appear they are doing any information until the product is about 2-3 months out from release. Given they have 5 products before Outlander on the trading card screen I'm not expecting info/glimpses until April or May.

Here's a link to an article about the upcoming set:

Outlander Trading Card Debut Date Getting Closer | Three If By Space (http://www.threeifbyspace.net/2016/08/outlander-trading-card-debut-date-getting-closer/?utm_content=buffer353d8&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer)

The part I found interesting is where they mention the 12 actors who have already been announced as signers and then follow that by saying "those are only about half of the show’s stars that have contracted to sign". So it looks like we can expect plenty more autographs. This set is going to be amazing.

Release date of November 16 is listed on Crypto's site. So I would assume the autograph list is final then. Shame that Caitriona didn't sign.

That sucks, I'm still gonna bust some boxes.

Without Caitriona Balfe signing this set is a loser

Don't believe me? See the Breaking Bad set without Bryan Cranston - how'd that do?

I am convinced that when the main star doesn't sign there is a big chance the release is terrible. There are, of course, outliers like Arrow - no Stephen Amell but the set survives - mainly IMHO because of all the fanboy's buying for Cassidy, Loitz, and Rickards.

They're probably saving her for season 2. Look at Arrow cards, they've made a mint on those, still no Amell auto.

Are binders really $70 on this site? Is this a joke by blowout? They must be joking, cause who would actually pay $69.95 (on sale mind you) for a binder?

These are $22.50 through distributors..is the standard markup $47.50 for a binder and a card? Jeepers what a racket...

Unfortunate they couldn't get Catriona to sign, I'll probably pick upa box or two, but the motivation to buy a bunch and try for the auto set is lost...while they did get some big names it'll always seem incomplete....

I'm a bit surprised at how well this set is doing. Even the wardrobe cards are selling high. Glad to see it though as this means more Outlander sets will be made which means more chances for a Caitriona autograph.

There was already a Outlander 2 set in the works. One of the tweets by Sam Heughan was a different picture with him in an outfit from season 2.

As for how the set is was doing, the set was not for the traditional people that hang around here. It is doing well because there is a large segment of Outlander fans that have their own forums, are big into the show and books and who are way more into the guys on the show and not fretting over failures of signings. And there is nothing wrong with that...

Interesting. Didn't know that.

They appear legit. Appears the article suggests that the items were secured from a lost package auction. Makes sense. Also tend to believe they are legit given George's response. I'd think if they were fake that they would have absolutely confirmed that and said fake. The response was that they weren't part of the official set which is true.

Wow this board is just rife with sexism lol. This set may very well end up blowing many others out of the water.

Don't worry it won't

Welp, you can eat your words right about now Northwellguy lol.

This set is the biggest hit of 2016, and Carr was right. Looking at singles, it is insane how great this set is selling for. Binders over $100? Aggie and i have been discussing this set a bit. Boxes sold out at $160ish.

Thoughts?

I think it's great the set did well, especially without Catriona signing. Hopefully it'll mean the card companies might look a little harder at releasing card sets that aren't all aimed at the same demographic. I bought a couple of boxes, the product was pretty decent.

They might just need to be quicker at releasing the sets though, as invariably the show finishes its run and interest in the cards wane as they're invariably a season or two behind.. so latter sets mightn't get made (thinking Downton Abbey, Continuum etc)

I'm still shocked at the prices some of these cards are selling for. I was worried that nobody would purchase this product. I hope to open more boxes, but who knows what they will sell for in the future.

You have to wonder if there's demand from a new market - non card collectors who are fans of the show chasing the singles to make sets ? I know on Twitter etc the fanbase is very passionate about the show. It has a huge following..

I've watched it since day one, and find it odd that people just suppose that this show is for women only. I know there wasn't much talk about this set on here, and judging by the box break section nobody seemed interested. I did see a lot of people posting their cards on Twitter while the majority of them were females. It appeared most were non card collectors like you mentioned.

Agree, it's not a "show for women" at all. I too have watched it pretty much from the start, but I'm a bit behind now, the second series hasn't hooked me quite as much as the first.

I guess though that historical drama's (even those with a sci fi/fantasy twist) probably don't instantly appeal to the majority of card collectors. But the show is certainly worth a look.

M34 is also short print.

In addition, most of the short prints (other than DM9) have 2 or more versions. For example, the M25 has white and black so, looking at about 15 of each. M20 has 3.

George confirmed the short prints months ago. Just not here.

Might be the last set where SPs are unknown. With Arrow S3, anything limited to /99 or less is crash numbered. Not sure if that is a one time trial run or will be the norm going forward.

I have mixed emotions. As a seller, I like to know those things. As a buyer I'd rather have it unknown in the first few days and enjoy the mystery of it.

I can't believe boxes of this are now $200+. It just goes to show, you never can predict which licenses will be big and which ones won't. I thought Downton Abbey was going to be much bigger than it ended up being. I thought this could go the way of Downton or the way of Game of Thrones or somewhere in between. I leaned towards Downton but I thought it would do a little better. I was wrong as it did quite a bit better. I wonder if Cryptozoic themselves are a bit surprised by this.

I'm sure it exceeded their expectations, but Cryptozoic did a lot of good things to help make it a smash hit product. Things like twitter giveaways, an active Facebook trading group, inserting promo cards about the cards in the DVD box sets, and interacting with the big Outlander fan groups all helped make this set extremely popular with a dedicated fan group... a group that mostly has never collected previously or bought packs/boxes of any other set.

It's been amazing and fun to watch it happen: seeing people wanting to collect a base set and put it in a special binder; hundreds of people opening only a box or two, and then TRADING to get the rest of the cards they want; people getting excited about getting hard to get promo cards in magazines; etc. People who don't want to even throw their wrappers away (much less base cards like many case breakers do), and instead are making cool things out of them, like smartphone cases, purses, even clothing. It's been a breath of fresh air!

Hopefully these fans aren't in for too much of a rude awakening for the Season 2 set. As popular as the Season 1 set was, and how much boxes eventually went up to, I have a bad feeling that some online retailers will set the pre-sales for the next set at much higher than the first set. Higher is to be expected on a popular set... if we see pre-sales at like double SRP however, that would be a shame.

Yeah, anyone buying direct from Cryptozoic should have to sell at a RRP for a month or so as part of their customer agreement...think some of the other manufacturers do similar...

Like you say, it's great that it's brought in a lot of new collectors... not all will want to buy other products, but hopefully some will...

There is also an exclusive season 2 promo card in the 2nd Season 1 binder being released next month. Speaking of this, has there ever been a CZE product to release a 2nd binder due to such high demand (after production) on the first?

If it is the auction I'm thinking of, they ended it probably because it was incredibly stupid to put an ad out there to purchase nothing, which people can like it or not, it is against Ebay's rules.
