Hey guys,
I am mostly a football guy. I'm looking to pick up a few Lebron rookies for the longterm (I realize now is not the best time to buy, but I'm going to anyway:))
I am probably going to overpay, but does anyone know the market value for a Lebron Chrome Refractor BGS 10? It looks like right now PSA 10's are going for $1200 and BGS 9.5's are going for $800 - $1100 (depending on subs). The pop report for a BGS 10 is 23 (which is a lot). I could not find a completed listing anywhere. There are two listed on ebay -$4,000 obo and $3,299 obo. They have been sitting there a while. I am just curious if right now this is like a $2,000 card or more like $2,500. Any insight would be great. I know football cards like the back of my hand but not so much basketball.
Thanks!

Raw they are about 650-750. 1200 for the PSA 10 is about right. I personally would prefer to have a PSA 10 over a BGS for that year and brand, but to each their own. I would pay more for a PSA 10 over a BGS 10 but like I said to each their own.

I appreciate the response - I definitely prefer PSA 10 over BGS 9.5 but I would like a BGS 10 over a PSA 10 (there are 23 BGS 10 and 98 PSA 10's). Just wondering if anyone knew past sales of this card, but it doesn't look like. Thanks so much!

I agree with above, but those values might be in for a big change if he wins this year. Either way solid card to put away, so hurry and buy ! lol.
I have the base rc BGS 9.5 W/ quad 9.5 subs< population is low for the over all run, as for which one would I prefer to have PSA 10 or BGS 10, I be happy with either, but would rather have the BGS 10.

BGS 10 > PSA 10 > BGS 9.5
For a Chrome Refractor BGS 10 you'd be looking at spending around $2,500-$3k

I think youre prices are about right. It looks like there's already some speculator's inflation on the 9.5s, so it might be best to wait til after the finals. If he wins, then it will still keep going up because his historical place will be higher. If he loses, prices will settle to what they were in the early spring.
And fwiw, when i traded for my refractor 9.5, i did it at the top of the market. and that was when it was at $400ish.

I know, right? There is another one listed and I have made an offer on it. I partially did not make an offer on this one because the guy seems so annoying to deal with and also the centering doesn't look as good to me. Thanks all!

Was just revisiting some of my old thread creations and found this gem. I was ready to pay $3,000 for a BGS 10 refractor but the seller would not come off the $3,299 price tag and I convinced myself to stay strong, and not overpay. Good work on my part:doh:

Lol... The best part about this BUMP is that sports*card*slavik has raised his aforementioned Ray Allen PSA 10 Refractor to $500,000. I listed a KD Xfractor a few months ago and he messaged me saying I was listing too low and he didn't appreciate me undercutting his price. The guy is a joke.

Look at the price change in 3 years, imagine another 3 if the economy stays strong and the actual investors we have stay in the sports card market

I think these things sometimes; but you may be discounting what you were able to do w/ the $3,000 anyway.
For example, as you likely know I owned a truck load of LeBron 2003 Chrome. I sold these cards about ~13 months ago; I decided to lock in the big numbers and take my money elsewhere. Not because I thought the value on LeBron would decrease; but because I had too much money tucked away in a single investment. I sold my 20 Ultimate autos; my Gold chromes, my blacks, refractors, base ... all gone. More than $600,000 after fees.
I try not to look back, but can't help to do so. When I sold my Ultimate 9.5 autos for $11,000 a piece I didn't think anything of it. I purchased them for under $4,000 a piece just 2 years prior and smiled all the way to the bank. Of course, the last one sold for $34,000 via OBO (probably inflated) but even if current value is say $25,000 ... man did I leave a chunk of money on the table. I had 20 of 'em!
It hurts. But then I get to thinking about what I've done with some of that money ... and it turns out reinvesting it into guys like Mookie Betts; helping some family members, tucking it away for the kids futures ... it's not so sad. I'm happy to have made my profits and move on. It's also healthy to see that players continue to increase value even after I sell them. Not cool to see me selling at peak prices (Luck for example); market should continue to thrive.
All in all; sellers remorse (or non-buyers remorse) is just part of the business. Always better than looking around thinking the best move would not be to buy because nothing will gain value.

Great post. $600k? Man. That's just incredible.
I think your point about what else you would be able to do with $3k is interesting. Lots of good ways to have spent $3k three years ago. We've seen incredible growth in the economy, and an even more amazing growth in high end collectibles.
High end basketball cards though? Just, good night. The growth has been unparalleled. The question is - why has it happened? and as usual.... there are a lot of answers.
What's clear to me is that there is a healthy amount of high end collectors that aren't going anywhere, a crop of up-and-coming guys that have come back over the last twelve months, and a trend towards high end that is staggering. For one of the first times in my time collecting, I've stopped selling high end except for the purpose of funding other cards.
Everyone is looking to move up... trade up. Most are looking for specific high end cards. People are dropping crazy money.... and many many collectors have reached a point where they've stopped being influenced by locking in small gains. They're set financially, and so the incremental couple hundred or even thousand dollars doesn't persuade them. When that happens... the economics are really fascinating.

This! Along with not selling any highend cards unless you’re doing so to get something higher end. That’s where we are at, football, it’s coming along for the ride too.

My question is, are we going to be looking back to this post in 3 years and say wow those who currently sell for around $25,000 left a lot of crumbs on the table? I really don't know the answer to that question.

I hope so. 3 years is a long time; they'll be a big election before then ... you never know. I do think as interest rates continue to rise steadily (HSBC savings account just increased their APY to 2.01% today, first national bank to do hit the 2% number), the getting will be good.
The trouble specific to LeBron is that how high can you go before you price out buyers? $25,000 for a rookie auto is already big money; can the card hit $50,000 / $75,000 / $100,000 and still have the interest? At what price does a card get to (any player) where the public says "no"? Can LeBron get there; can Trout or Brady get there?
Is there a cap or will the market simply rise while the tide rises? We'll see but I do think the value in LeBron continues north as he continues to break records.
Great thread to read.
As much as people thought Panini would kill the hobby, it was actually probably one of the best things to ever happen to the basketball card marketplace

I think a lot of growth has come from social media. When I first got on Instagram with my card account there wasn’t many peeps on sharing, hashtagging etc sportscards. I know people had Flickr accounts in the past but just the power of all the social media exposure to the hobby has brought in a lot of new sports lovers and past collectors like myself who use to collect, left and have come back with nostalgia and post college careers.

It's crazy how much Chrome (and Prizm) has jumped in the last few years. Everybody was relatively affordable and prices have gone through the roof since then. Anybody who was hoarding Chrome before this explosion made a ton of money.

What record is he going to break? Most finals losses? The only regular season record he has is most consecutive 10 point games. That is pretty weak. Not setting records for most 20-30-40-50 point games in a row. Not setting records PPG, RPG, APG, SPG or BPG. Nor Rebounds, Assists, Steals or Blocks. The only big record he might get is Kareem's points record.
Outside of that, is he ever going to win another championship? Will he catch Magic, Kobe and Duncan with 5? Jordan and Kareem with 6? What happens if Steph Curry gets to 6 and Durant gets to 5 and LeBron is still stuck on 3? Do people pump their cards and let LeBron stagnate?

Being the all time leading scorer and also 3rd all time in assists might increase the return on investment. I found a couple others he could fall back on besides the 3 rings.

What about this one? He should break Karl Malone's record in 2 or 3 years.

I thought LeBron had multiple single digit playoff games? So clearly they don't count towards the streak? That's pretty lame.
I actually think we'll see LeBron win more rings. The Lakers will go beyond the cap so far to make it happen.
Nobody will EVER have the easy run through the East LeBron has had, reform will happen, so I could see plenty of counting star records piling up for him.
