View Full Version : Kris Bryant prices are through the roof - why?

Okay, I get that Bryant has unbelievable power and potential but why are his cards so expensive right now?

His stats:
14 HR, 61 RBI, (League Leading) 130 SO
.246/.354/.432
He also leads the league with errors at 3B.

Nothing, to me, to be too excited about.
I'm not saying he's not a good player, it's just his cards shouldn't be so damn expensive..

Same thing as Harper his rookie year
Same as Strasburg his rookie year

They will dip in off season, or due to injury, or who Cubs blow it in playoffs. Then next year he will start off hot and sell well again.

He is only 23 and had a very quick start to his MLB career. He has cooled off since, but just like Joc Pederson, a fast start pushes the prices further up and they remain there because people have seen what they are capable of. Just as the saying goes, chicks love the long ball, well so do the collectors.

Big Market, Big talent, team is in the playoff hunt, big time pedigree.

Is be perfect? Nope. But he is still very young, very talented, and will continue to get better and better.

Schwarber is a better pure hitter than Bryant. His swing is very natural, simple.

I don't get the "he's only 23 argument." A sophomore slump away from people saying "he's only 25 entering his third year with a ton of power potential."

The only 23 argument is that since he is still young, people will invest because of his potential of having a long and successful career. I know, some players have already hit their stride by the time they were 23, but some players are a little late bloomers. He will continue to sell high until he shows that he doesn't deserve it and will be a middle of the road type player. But right now he is still young enough to where his potential is carrying him.

For the same reason his prices were so high when his MLB statline was

.000/0/0/0/.000/.000/etc...

He still has tons of potential. People still believe he can be a prolific hitter and possibly lead the Cubs to a World Series. I'm not saying they're right or wrong, but that's why he still sells well. Hype and potential.

15.18.21.23.25. It's all the same when talking about a rookie season.

Having said that. It is hype, potential, and the Cubs being a contender for the next few years.

Bryant's prices are down 50% from the peak. People who bought during ST are getting crushed.

imbluestreak23

Lots of people have put in lots of money into Bryant. Because he has been hyped for so long, his values have a lot more staying power than the average prospect.

Having said that. Eventually the continued fall will convince holders of Bryant to cash out while they can. I foresee plenty of top prospects and young MLB stars to have their values rise in the near future when Bryant owners cash out and place their Bryant money elsewhere.

Hopefully the first paragraph answered the question.

Through the roof? You must not have been paying attention 3-4 months ago. Now those prices were through the roof. Right now they are about half the price that they were during their peak.

Agree about Correa. Honestly, Troy Glaus isn't even an insult. He had a nice career, hit a ton of HR's (320) and made 4 All-Star games and was a World Series MVP. Not too many players can say this.

True. He averaged 34 homers and 100 rbi a year, and if he didn't shred his shoulder early in his career, he might have had pretty good career stats. He retired at 33.

That's a really interesting comparison. His Leaf R & S card was worth a boatload, all things considered. If he had a weird two year Bowman Chrome autograph who knows what that would've fetched way back when.

Troy Glaus isn't really an insult. 320 career home runs in just 13 seasons along with a career .847 OPS. How is that hating? Most players would kill for such stats. If he had played until he was 39 he'd have come close to 500 homers.

Because prospecting. Took me a while to understand, but that's pretty much it.

Same reason Alex Jackson still sells for more than Sonny Gray.

The fact that people bag on a Troy Glaus comparison shows how unrealistic a hobby this is. Seriously, step back a bit.

People need to understand how difficult it is to be a successful, star baseball player. Superstars of the past would have lit up this current hobby with excitement...only to retire without a realistic shot of the HOF. That's not a negative, but we clearly set the bar way too high.

Is Bryant destined for stardom? Who knows, who cares.

Whatever pressure/value we place on prospects is our own issue to get over.

The worst part about this argument, in my opinion, is that Manny Machado, the superior player that is already a 2 time All Star and probably going to win like the next 15 gold gloves at 3B is younger!

Part of it is where they play, but I agree I'd rather have Machado.

The problem is, Bryant's minors/ST home run numbers were all anyone looked at and then came the unreasonable expectations of 50 HR in his rookie season which just pushed the hype train even more.
