I'm looking into buying some boxes from my collecting hiatus ('96-'10). I was just wondering are there years in that range that are largely safe from redemptions?
What year did redemptions truly start to get out of hand?
Is there any list out there of what products were especially redemption-heavy?
Thanks in advance!

I think 2013 had to be the worst I had ever seen.

I remember 2005 Fleer products being the first where the redemptions felt really commonplace. Of course a lot of that had to do with Fleer's financial status I'm sure. I think they started becoming more common by the late 2000's, but it really depends on the product and year.

2008 was the year that I remember pulling more redemptions than I ever had previously. Perhaps it was due to the volume, but still.

Right on. Had boxes of '04 platinum and '05 patchworks in my hand earlier and put them back. LCS owner warned me of fleer, and for the price he was selling for, wasn't worth the risk.
With the price point I'm buying them for, it'll still be a fun rip even if I so hit a nice expired redemption.
I have six boxes incoming:
2001 UD pros and prospects
2002 UD minors
2002 UD series 2
2002 fleer tradition update
2002 UD vintage
And 2004 UD series one
for a whopping total of $150 delivered lol. Should be a fun rip with some longshot odds of some cool cards, but at that price I won't be too bummed to hit a monster redemption.
I'll stay away from the higher priced stuff until I get a better idea of how redemption-filled they are

2008 UD was pretty redemption heavy. Of course I am basing this on a small sample size , 1 box masterpiece, 2 box spectrum and 5 redemptions....

Redemptions got out of hand when companies began releasing redemptions for cards that they never had contracts in place to fulfill.
We've done nothing to hold them accountable, so they went wild and continue to do so.
