Is he this years NL MVP? I think he should be. He is hitting for average, and power. He is scoring runs, and driving in runs, along with stealing bases and playing a gold glove outfield. Do the Rockies have to make the playoffs for him to win it? Now as far as card collecting goes, does he have any certified autos out there?

Rockies not in the playoffs means the award goes to Joey Votto. similar stats on a playoff team.

agree that Votto is the MVP but Gonzalez is massively underrated right now. I think he has the major disadvantage of a poor baseball media market and also my own silly drawback which is that his name is way too common.

I think Posey gets it in all honesy. Might be a bigger club stereo type that might get him it. Gonzales I think has overtaken Votto. That being said, I know there was some MVP talk for Votto and that might be enough to vault him to the top since I doubt he wins the MVP award.

Gonzo's biggest problem is that his home/road splits make him very much out to a be a huge product of Coors Field. That alone will probably hold him out of MVP contention with Pujols and Votto each having awesome years.

Posey will get the NL ROY, but I think with current play being a factor, that Gonzalez wins it. The Rockies are making a push for the playoffs and may just make it. If they do, I think he wins it. If they do not, I still think he should. Pujols is out of it. I think it is between Votto and Gonzalez. Does Gonzalez have any auto cards? If anybody has one, could you please post a scan here. Thanks.

Assuming the Reds win the NL Central, Votto wins the MVP. As others have mentioned, CarGo's home/road splits are SO vastly different, it takes away from his overall line a bit IMO.

It looks like topps is missing the bus on two of the biggest rising stars in baseball. I know Votto has some 2009 topps sterling product but overall he does not have much out there, and as far as Gonzalez goes I do not see much at all. Can you guys think of any other players that have been around long enough, that topps has a limited amount of product for?

Might not be as much of a thing as Topps is missing out as the players wanting to much for their autos?

This is ironic, I had lunch today with one of my friends and this topic came up. My comment was the Rockies have to make the playoffs for Cargo to get the MVP. I have the joy of watching him every game and how much this guy has improved from the start of the season to current date is amazing. He is going to be a superstar for years to come and this is NOT a Coors field factor. He is a tremendous talent with all the tools a player could want.
All of that said, it is between him and Votto and I think the final few games will decide this race.

I love Carlos Gonzalez. I drafted him in every fantasy league, and it paid huge dividends for me this year. He's the #1 player in most fantasy league formats... but fantasy baseball MVP's don't always equal real life MVPs. As others has said, his stats for the year on the road are borderline bad, certainly no better than average. His home numbers are just unreal. Couple that with the fact he's not likely going to be leading his team to a playoff berth and I just don't see an MVP happening for him. With that said, his road numbers are a little better as of late, and if by some miracle he and the Rockies can get themselves into playoff contention AND/OR the Reds fall out of contention and Votto slumps the last month, then he'd probably get some more serious consideration. But I suppose if the Reds fall out of the playoffs it probably means Albert Pujols and the Cardinals were crushing the ball the last few weeks of the season, so Gonzalez is going to have Votto or Pujols to contend with either way.
As for Buster Posey, I like him a lot (again, drafted in all my fantasy leagues) and think he's been the best rookie position player so far this year. But he wouldn't even be my National League rookie of the year, and definitely not the NL MVP. He had one AMAZING month of July. And while you can't discount that, the rest of his time this year has been between above average and good. His month of July puts him in the 'very good' category for the year, but Jamie Garcia from the Cardinals has had a more impressive rookie campaign. And IMO, ROY voting has nothing, and I mean nothing, to do with how the team is positioned for a playoff berth (or lack of one). The award isn't supposed to be an 'MVP' among rookies, its an award to recognize who had the most outstanding individual year among rookies.
Garcia has been good ALL YEAR! He has only 5 starts THE ENTIRE SEASON where he's given up 3 or more earned runs!!! That means 21 of his starts he's given up only 0, 1, or 2 runs!!!
To give that stat some perspective, here is how he compares to other notable pitchers in baseball...
Player (Number of Starts Total) - Number of starts with 3 earned runs or more [%]:
Matt Latos (25) - 4 [16%]
Jamie Garcia (25) - 5 [20%]
Adam Wainwright (29) - 6 [21%]
Josh Johnson (28) - 7 [25%]
Tim Hudson (28) - 7 [25%]
Clay Buchholz (24) - 7 [29%]
Felix Hernandez (30) - 8 [27%]
Trevor Cahill (25) - 8 [32%]
Clayton Kershaw (28) - 8 [29%]
Roy Halladay (29) - 9 [31%]
David Price (26) - 9 [33%]
Ubaldo Jimenez (28) - 10 [36%]
Roy Oswalt (28) - 10 [36%]
Jon Lester (28) - 10 [36%]
Jered Weaver (29) - 11 [38%]
Cliff Lee (24) - 11 [46%]
Johan Santana (29) - 11 [38%]
Carl Pavano (28) - 11 [39%]
Chris Carpenter (30) - 12 [40%]
Cole Hamels (28) - 12 [43%]
Matt Cain (28) - 13 [46%]
C.C. Sabathia (29) - 14 [48%]
Assuming Garcia finishes the season the way he's pitched all season long, he should win the NL ROY hands down, with all due respect to Buster Posey. Posey stacks up as the best among his rookie hitter counterparts. Garcia stacks up favorably to some of the entire game's best starting pitchers, not just rookies.

This is a subject that I think needs to be addressed again, now that the season is closer to ending. Is he the MVP? Does he have a real chance for the triple crown?

Currently 7 HR behind Pujols so that probably won't happen. Definitely an MVP candidate though.

Not sure what Votto's numbers are, but Gonzalez has been unconscious since the AS Break. .385, 20 2B, 15 HR, 46 RBI, 11 SB in 53 games.

Gonzalez is hot and so is Tulo. Look out for the Rockies. They are fun to watch. Out of the teams in the west, that is who I would like to see.

Garcia may very well win the NL ROY but Posey should. Saying he only had a hot July misses some important points. When Posey came up, the Giants had just gone through a May stretch where they lost 11 of 16 and couldn't beat NL West teams.
Posey's presence solidified the Giants lineup (he's hitting cleanup for goodness sake), gave Aubrey Huff protection in the lineup, and greatly impacted the defense/pitching in his ability to throw out runners. He should get some MVP votes because without him, the Giants wouldn't be in the Pennant Race. He should definitely win the ROY. Garcia is great but only pitches every 5 days so I think Posey's impact on the team is greater.
The NL MVP has to be Votto. Did anyone see the Reds coming?? CarGo is really fun to watch but I think it's Tulowitzki that's driving their playoff push so he won't get all the credit, even if they do make the playoffs.

Oh nay nay Wolfman. Yes he is a great talent with plus tools but his numbers are vastly different at home. Almost a hundred points higher on the average and the power numbers aren't even close. Granted the NL West has some big parks but your blinded by your fandom if you can''t see the difference in numbers. Eventually as he matures they probably even out a little but this year the numbers don't lie.... ya friggin homer;).

Ok Bammers then you better have Ubaldo marked down as your Cy Young winner then. Look at his home numbers compared to the road numbers and it is night and day different. This park which is suppose to help Cargo so much should hurt a pitcher like Ublado who pitches half of his game in that park.
I don't know why you say it was homerish either?!?!? I said if the Rocks make the playoffs he would win it.. Guess what? They didn't and he won't. It will be Votto. I am the not even close to being a homer on any team. I am a sports handicapper so I can't have clouded thoughts on any teams. :)!

Just breaking your balls with the homer there " Mr. sports handicapper" The numbers are what they are on Gonzo, doesn't mean he isn't worthy of MVP consideration or a superstar in the making.
My NL Cy Young is still Doc who pitches in a bit of a hitter friendly park himself.

No I agree that Roy is the Cy Young but you can't use that argument against Cargo and not use it for Ubaldo.
By the way, Bud Black is still ahead of Uncle Charlie in the manager of the year in my book.
