THANK YOU!! I remember seeing the thread and my jaw dropping on the ground (I have, since, picked it up). I spent a train load of cash on the first year's release, but that was NOTHING compared to what this guy has......

That is such a cool set and collection! I am thinking now about doing a few of the insert sets. I bought a box and got the base set and a Jordan n-tense insert so I am probably going for that set

I have a ton of the pmg red, blue, green of the first year set...
Blow up a ton of money on it buying a Nash red for $100 each...
But now you'd be lucky to sell one for $2.
I lost on this set but still have them all...
Wishing one day they could pick up again in value.

His name was FleerRetro. He got banned on his first day after someone asserted their intellectual Alpha Dog prowess on his first post. He didn't take kind to getting talked down to and retaliated by trumping intellectualism with good ol' fashioned manliness.
What's a set without this guy?

JORDAN!!!
By the way, we was around for the influence of Dejuan Wagner's 100 point game. That was about the same time as the "Ball-hog" movement. Coincidentally it was right around the birth of the WNBA. Regardless, Wagner was ballin, son.

Ballin, you have an amazing collection. I am just speechless. I know a lot of people bash on the college uni's, but they just don't appreciate how cool those cards look. I, on the other hand, love Retro!!!!!!

80% of retro inserts have cheaper quality than the original. No embossed. Poor surface for refractor. No refractor when it should have.
Only 20% came really closed to have the exact printing detail.

My brother's got a copy of the most of the original 90's inserts from Retro. We'll give some side by sides at some point instead of just writing how good or poor of quality these cards are compared to the original.

There's a better blog I found months ago but I forgot to bookmark it. If I find it again I will give the link.

That's fine.
I have both 90's and retro inserts in front of me, and I can feel/see the difference. Like the A cut above, Retro does not have "rainbow" reflection. The die-cut is cropped from the back (not from the front). The Retro is not embossed.

We share the exact same sentiment on Retro's A Cut Above. Same goes with 12-13 (98-99) PMG. Why didn't they give it some texture? But we can't be grouping Playmaker's Theater and 11-12 Big Men on Court with A Cut Above in terms of embossed as there were non-embossed originals as well.
We can sh*t on them for not punching out the Z's on Noyz Boyz. Why didn't they give 11-12 PMG's a wicked awesome graphic etching like the $100k original that we all love and wish we owned? And 13-14 PMG's don't make any sense. They're not retro, they're a brand new thing.
As far as Fresh Ink goes, anyone claims they like the original set better is lying. And what about the Retro Credentials set? Is that a chase or what? Who owns them Lebron and Jordan 1/1's?
And by the way, my brother thinks 12-13 (97-98) PMG is the best card ever made. Better than the original. That being said, he aspires to someday own an original Jordan. The combination of a short printed dizzying surface with a player raised above a foil picture of a landmark from the state they played in is all you can ask for in an insert.
Concerning the college uniforms, don't sh*t on them too much or the Exquisite and Flawless guys will lose a lot of money. And beyond that, give me a hungry 20 year old Jordan Intimidation Nation over a tired 36 year old version. Anyone who don't love Larry on the Sycamores don't love basketball. Did Bill Walton play in the NBA? I know he dominated at UCLA. How about Lebron back when he played with no money, back when he was ballin?
I realize a lot of people lost money on this product. The rumor I always remember is that an 11-12 Russell PMG green sold for over $5,000 right around release. But my brother busted around 15 cases of 12-13 when it was $550/case. He never purchased a single until months after release and is very happy with his collection. He's got all the cards we wanted as kids.
I also know some 90's insert guys hate the idea of Retro. Besides raising positive awareness of the originals and bringing guys like my brother and I back in the hobby, what has Retro done?
And the one glaring fact, that Wagner is egging on, is it's the ONLY hobby product with Jordan or Lebron autos. That's a big deal, guys.

Those 2 shots of all the different retro inserts are incredible. Is it true that each and every insert type has tech inferior to the originals? I've heard that it's the case for certain ones, was wondering if it was across the board.

I think PMG red/green, jambalaya, and Star Power Supreme are very close to the original. Few more, but I just don't remember right now.

I bought 2 cases in 11-12. I opened 1 and sold the other. The one I sold had the 11-12 Bill Russell green PMG (mine had a Blue PMG Lebron that I sold for $2100.00). I ended up buying an 11-12 Bill Russell green PMG earlier this year for $100.00......:)!

The 97-98 Metal Universe Championship PMG is probably my favorite insert out of retro. They used different backgrounds relating to the player's college town. Thought that was cool. I noticed all the retro sets have a darker tent than the originals. I wonder why they didn't release a product this past year? I wanted to see which sets they used. I think the set choice on the newest product hurt them a little, choosing more lower end sets and the PMG being from 95-96 which didn't exist.
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the fresh ink sets and all other 90's autos on card. I thought Retro uses all sticker autos.

Yes! You've fallen into my trap MaconItHappen, at least with Mystique Fresh Ink. That's the only original auto I've held and, yes, that's a sticker where they signed. It's just not the sticker we're all used to. I guess the player could have signed it after they put the sticker on it, but the same goes for any sticker auto. Retro's Mystique Fresh Ink has foil and the standard tape sticker. It's also got JORDAN!!!
As far as I know all the original Autographics were on-card.
My brother and I haven't found time to get together for a card day in a while and this is his collection. These cards are at his place. I've got a lot of opinions and know some things about the originals and Retro's versions, but words don't show. And my word is worth nothing compared to FleerRetro's when talking Retro anyway.
We'll have more time in a couple months to get together for some card sessions. I'll get a beauty camera just for this side by side project. Let it be known that it will be heavily weighted towards Retro and is not intended to take away from the originals. It would be weighted the other way if he busted 15 cases 20 years ago.
Don't let this post end the thread though. Keep up the Retro discussion. Finally some dialogue on this site.

I could've sworn I read posts about other inferiorities in the insert sets beyond just that of darker tint/colors...

Duron, it would take two lifetimes to read through the s*it-fest on Retro.
But, BryanDWells did a good job not too long ago. I may have to use some of his pictures:

I bought one case of Retro, sold it, and the guy who bought my case hit a Russell Green PMG. I will always love Retro. They will never be the originals, but it's as close as I will ever get to the originals..........
