View Full Version : POLL - Scans or Pictures?

So I'm debating giving up Photobucket. It has never really bothered me but I've heard so many complaints from people that don't even want to look at buckets anymore because of issues they have on their end.

I'm potentially going over to either Flickr or SCA - whichever doesn't really matter for this purposes I suppose.

I've also lost some track of my inventory because of the pain it is to scan - I have a literally 20 year old PC at home that is hooked up to my scanner - as I just use my iPad for everything else when I'm not at home. The scanner works fine but it can take me literally like 30 minutes to upload scans because the computer will freeze sometimes.

If I start from scratch do people prefer to see scans (keep in mind my scanner sucks - it isn't exactly crystal clear) or pictures? I'm OCD so I'd use my phone for everything so all the pictures were standard.

Thoughts?

Scans look better most of the time but like you said its a pain. With a decent camera you can get some good pics too.

I was in the same boat a few years ago (old PC and old scanner). Upgraded both and now wirelessly scan to PC (when convenient) on an "all in one" printer. I'm glad I upgraded as scan time is SUPER fast. However, for quick uploads, I use my Ipad.

There are some wicked deals this weekend, so if you're contemplating new stuff, now is a good opportunity.

BTW....I'm dumping the bucket too. That has turned into garbage software.

Agreed - ideally I'd prefer to use a scanner - but even buying a new one won't get it done. I need to upgrade my entire system to a new PC or Laptop with the new scanner. We are moving in like 5 months so that's probably when I'll buy new.

Yeah - like I said I'm moving soon - so I'll upgrade all my stuff. I guess the real question is do I wait 5 months, and just use my super slow scanner now, or do I just take pictures with my iPad and or phone?

I don't even own a scanner, the iPhone 6 camera works great.

1. Use Google Drive...

2. Scanning will probably get you the most detail, unless you're going to get into professional/semi-professional camera equipment...

3. iPhone6 and a couple lights will look great. A couple clip lights pointing on a monster box lid is one way...Edit the photo on the phone, crop out as much of the background as possible, you will be good to go...Send the photos to Google Drive, renaming them and placing them in a named folder for set/player etc...Cards are then accessible from any device and can be easily shared...

(If you're talking about Photobucket) yeah I left that a while ago and haven't looked back and I'm so much more happier with Flickr, close to zero load time, no ads popping up and the app works great! :D:flex:

Looks like you take pictures of your items? Not scanned?

Yeah no scans for me, I need to get a updated scanner, mine is way too old.

Thanks

Maybe I'll test a few via picture tonight and see how it works.

I could stay way more up to date if I just took pictures each night of anything new

I prefer high-res scans for my album, but for reflective cards (like prizm or chrome) sometimes photos look nicer. If you see all the pics shown off in the Knight's Lance blog, those are all taken with an iPhone. Apparently my iPhone sucks or my lighting sucks, because I can't get similar results unless I have the card standing up near direct sunlight. But I like scans most of the time because I can see clearly whether there is any damage to the card and I can see all four corners perfect. Sometimes photographs hide imperfections because of the angle the pic is taken from or the reflections on any mirror surfaces of the card.

I also like scans because I think the consistency looks good in an album and because you can control (or remove) the background entirely, just by tracing a rectangle around the card in Photoshop or paint or whatever and cropping it. Can't crop photographs as easily because the pics don't always come out a perfect 3.5'' x 2.5''. This is my favorite album (https://sportscardalbum.com/u/sensei322/a/football/2013-fleer-retro)because of all the color, but you can see that all the cards have the same look and feel to them. The Peyton Metal Universe was the only one from that set that didn't scan well.

I take pics sometimes when I'm uploading from the app, but I usually delete those and upload a scan once I have time because I think it looks nicer.

EDIT: Until I buy a new scanner I have to take photos of most graded cards simply because my scanner cannot handle depth.

I have everything uploaded to Box incase one day photobucket disappears. You get a ton of free storage...i think 50GB for personal accounts.

Iphone 6+ and the photobucket app = zero problems ... on my end at least .... good enough camera on the iphone that I dont care too much about a scanner ;)

I go with Scans, but as someone said sometimes cards with a chrome-type finish come out flat with the scanner.

Not to hijack the thread, but does anyone have advice for posting their collections here on BO? No matter what I try with resizing my photos and all that, they always end up tiny.

I'd like to get my Allen Robinson PC better organized and more presentable.

I have no reason to buy a scanner. My Casio Exilim Camera with correct lighting is just as good.

Looks good! I used to have sportscardalbum, but I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to adjust the order of the photos...lol so I went to Flickr.

Thoughts?

This website is the winner. Best I've used by far and it's not even close.

I have always used my digital camera ( sony) and on occasion have used my IPhone, I have Flicker and love it, switched from photobucket about 2 years ago, Photobucket was freezing and constant ads popping up.

asujbl, your Slabbed PC is looking awesome and those scans/pictures look extremely nice.

Picture. Just so much easier nowadays with the way technology is going. Take a picture with your Device and instantly upload to photobucket or ebay? So easy. Plus camera's on portable devices keep getting better and better.

Thanks.

I did those last night in like 10 minutes. That's why I'm leaning towards just using pictures.

I have like 75 more slabs I need to do for my BGS PC

I prefer scans for the most part. I can not get my scanner to get great pictures of graded cards but it's new and I haven't really messed around in the settings much. It's a nice Canon I scored on sale for like $80. I do like nice pics though especially of Chrome refractors and the likes.

I uploaded my Allen Robinson and Jameis Winston PCs to Imgur recently and thought it was incredibly fast and user-friendly. I can even add the serial numbers to the pics on with their editor.
