View Full Version : What happened to Panini's SB 50 Promo? NO Interest...

I've been tracking it since it's started, and hardly any of the promo packs have been bought (by overspending $150 on their crap for 1 promo pack).
Last year, they were $100 per pack and they sold out in a few days and were hot on Ebay at around $100 per promo pack!! So, essentially anyone smart enough got the packs for free and gained $$ by selling off their overpriced Crown Royale, Limited, etc. boxes on Ebay!
While this year's rookie class isn't as good-it's still newer and decent enough where there haven't been hardly ANY that Panini's sold?? I've been checking by adjusting my limits on 900 boxes or lower of each of Crown Royale/Gridiron Kings/Prizm (disgusting, huh?), and they've sold 84 boxes since the day I bought enough junk for 10 of them (hours after they came out), while nearly 1,300 remain!!
Is it just the $150 price point? Are people finally getting so disgusted with Panini and their billion sticker autos and brand new NBA/NFL Product every week (I have visions of thousands of orange 1990 Donruss baseball boxes in my head every time) I get my daily newletter about Panini's new "Eminence" "Awesomeness" and the much-anticipated "Totally Radical Super Duperly Certified." Take away the competition and this is what we get. Deals with the NFLPA and NBA that require each rookie to sign thousands of sheets of stickers so they can slap them on enough cards to make 5 billion cases each of their 50 brands. This is why I only collect Leaf/ITG, and wonder why nobody else is, too. Very nice, always in perfect shape (in holders), and on card auto's-all for a nice price.
Still a head-scratcher. I'm currently the only one selling one of the packs on Ebay, (I've been tracking it since it's started, and hardly any of the promo packs have been bought (by overspending $150 on their crap for 1 promo pack).

Lol at the threepeat. I don't think it has anything to do with the class. If anything, this year's is better for collectors since it has two higher end quarterbacks compared to the previous one and better running backs. It's because the cards look uglier, the price is more expensive and the product selection is even worse, if you can believe. It's not hard to figure out.

It's more the quality of the players in the promo checklist. Last year's was stacked. Nearly all HOFers or big time vets last year. This years is watered down with a ton of low selling players added. They removed Favre, Elway, Manning, Riggins, Moon, Dawson and nearly all the other big names.
I opened about 50 last year and the average selling price over that population was around $85. Only a few on the checklist sold for under $35 where this year's only a few will sell above.

Anyone buying these? A head scratcher. They were $100 last year, but now $150 this year. A head scratcher. Is anyone buying these? A head scratcher. Is everyone fed up with Panini? I know it's not a stong rookie class, but still a head scratcher.
I am not interested in buying $150 worth of cards to get maybe $5 worth of cards.

It's probably just the horrible economy in an election year. Have you seen the stock market lately?
I swear, I hate that unintelligent people are allowed to put whatever they want in printed form online. Too many people believe what they read. Not everyone deserves a voice if they can't understand economics and the events around them and just start claiming the sky is falling.
Not to be a stickler but... saying "by overspending $150 on their crap for 1 promo pack" implies that their "crap usually sells for $0.00 and they are now asking for $150.00. If a box is normally $125 and they are asking $150 you are, in fact, over spending $25 not the entire amount of a box.
OP linked to an auction for one of these packs that is still sealed.
2015 2016 Panini Super Bowl 50 Promo Box Pack 1 1 1 5 Diamonds etc Autograph | eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/2015-2016-Panini-Super-Bowl-50-Promo-Box-Pack-1-1-1-5-Diamonds-etc-Autograph-/151975688074?&rmvSB=true)
That's selling for over $80 right now, and the auction isn't over yet. Isn't it safe to assume if they are over charging by, say, $50 per box and you get a "free" pack that sells for $75 or more, that this is still a good deal? Not as good as last year but still a good deal right?
Obviously if Panini were selling their own boxes for the same price as Blow Out AND giving away these $75.00 packs the industry would throw a fit! Consumer would be happy but not distribution.
So tell me again whats wrong with charging me $50 more on a box and handing me a $75 gift in return?

I was looking forward to the promo deal, as i greatly enjoyed in last year. The $50 bump in amount of product needed for one pack was a partial factor in why i decided to stay away this time but the main reason was the checklist. Last year's promo packs were loaded with Hall of Fame players and current, big name stars. This year, it has been reduced to another prospect/rookie product. No thanks. Does the NFL mandate that every product produced contain x number of rookies? Some of us like the older players and grow weary of non stop rookie products. It's gotten to the point where i am more interested in MLB sets because you can find a decent amount of vets/retired guys.

Yeah, I get that I had a repeat in the cut & paste when I posted my ebay link to show what they look like. Love dealing with the jerks in this forum. Reason I love buying online-so I don't have to run into them in hobby shops.
It's the disparity of going from selling out about 1,400 promo boxes in a few days last year, to them selling around 100 or less in several weeks? So the $50 extra they're charging can't all be the reason. The player selection is a lot worse than I realized, other than the DECENT rc's. But people always go nuts over this.
Remember the NBA one last June? Sold out in an hour or 2!! I don't even know if there WAS a checklist at the time. THIS is why it's a head-scratcher...
Thanks for the informative input, guys.

Wow, this coming from someone who clearly doesn't understand finance or economics.
If there's one thing you learn right now it is this: the stock market is not the economy and the economy is not the stock market.
The stock market has been brutal so far in 2016 but the economy is strong. How you ask? Because Janet Yellen just said so in Congress. And she backed it up by the following key metrics:
• Unemployment less than 5%, much better than the 10% it had been
• Wage growth in Jan 2015
• Home prices are rising
• 2015 saw an increase in big-ticket item spending, like new car sales
• Low gas prices
Yup, things aren't perfect, unemployment is still higher than ideal; China's slowing economy hurts America's exports; and there are troubles in manufacturing.
The positives generally outweigh the negatives. And this isn't my opinion - this is what a consensus of economists throughout the country have to say about the matter. These are people who studied finance and economics far longer than my paltry 4 years at University and certainly more than whatever nonsense popped into your head during your time sitting on the toilet.
And to read your nasty comment insulting someone's intelligence, suggesting they shouldn't be allowed to speak, while you're giving your own vague, weakly-supported, elementary notion on why people aren't spending money, psh. And to accuse someone of acting like the sky is falling, when you suggest the economy is suffering when, in reality, the market downturn right now may only be a blip and natural correction!
You are to economics what Cam Newton is to a fumble - clueless. Prove me wrong. Please, enlighten everyone here on how there's a straightforward and direct correlation between stock market performance and what people spend on trading cards.
I'll check back in another 6 months when I feel the urge to see if BO members have finally learned to back up their arguments with facts and not generalities.

You can say that again!! All joking aside, people are tired of Panini's never ending sticker dump. Imagine if the 97 UD Legends set would of been loaded with sticker autos. It's pretty obvious that this is a money grab on Panini's part, they are basically a casino that is catering to grown adults who enjoy the thrill of opening card boxes with the dreams of hitting a big $$ card.

I think more money is leaving the hobby than is entering.
Much of the high dollar amounts being spent is on vintage or graded cards.
Wax is declining massively, even with group breaks propping up the industry.
We are due for a major correction sooner than later.
I will start buying product again after the market corrects itself a little bit.
Panini bullied their way into these ridiculous contracts and now they have to justify those insane numbers, by getting their customers to foot the bill..

It was just priced at a point where I felt like it is too much of a gamble if you open everything. All of the products listed for sale don't have too many high end hits. You are pretty much hoping for a home run on the promo pack, and those look tough this year.
This year's price point made it not worth the effort of ripping and trying to sell for me. I think the sweet spot for this promo is around the $120 range.

I wouldn't even tough it if it were the standard $100 this year, and this is coming from someone who participated heavily the last few years.
The checklist is GOD AWFUL + they upped the price point? YUCK.

Yeah, but they gotta get rid of stock, and I fear they'll drop it back down to $100-screwing me over. But yes, a mass revolt against Panini and their billion sticker autos is going to happen very soon, if it isn't already happening.
Does anyone know a relatively prominent NFL rookie in the last couple years? I want to know more than anything-how many total sticker sheets full of stickers to autograph did you pen in total do you figure, for Panini? Someone like say, Allen Robinson or Brandin Cooks. The number has got to be astronomical!!
A market correction is looming for sure...

For most of the products, you need to buy 2 boxes to get 1 promo card. So if the boxes each are priced about $40 more than you could net flipping them, the promo card cost you $80. That is a big risk to take for someone who plans to flip the boxes and sell the unopened promo packs or the opened promo cards, especially with the weaker checklist this year.
Yeah, I get that I had a repeat in the cut & paste when I posted my ebay link to show what they look like. Love dealing with the jerks in this forum. Reason I love buying online-so I don't have to run into them in hobby shops.
I don't think anyone was being a jerk to you in here. Just a little teasing for your obvious gaff.
I think everyone will agree with you that last years promo was better. And you pointed out yourself that their NBA sold out in a couple of hours. Maybe they thought they were being too generous? If past promos were insanely popular I'm sure, as a business, they thought they would go fishing to see where our breaking point was.
Apparently its at $150 MIN and an average box markup of 35%.
But its still a good promo if you were going to bust some wax anyway.
2015 Panini Collegiate Prizm Draft Picks Football $30 on BO $60 on Panini.
You pay + $30 for the box and need to buy 3. Thats $90 over paying for a sealed pack that should sell for $75. Not a good deal but only a $15 risk.
2015 Panini Contenders Draft Football $80 on BO $144 on Panini. Youd have to buy something else since you'd be $6 short. $64 over pay for a $75 pack is cutting it close!
2015 Panini Prizm NFL Trading Cards $55 on BO $80 on Panini. You'd have to buy 2 boxes to get a pack. Thats $50 over pay but still +$25 in value.
So yes its bad for us as a consumer when things change. And Panini does look like they got too greedy here with a pisspoor checklist and upping the buy in. But its still not a bad deal if you hit the math right.
If I wanted in I'd buy 4 boxes of Prizm. I'd take a shot at pulling a decent rookie auto in 4 boxes and I'd only over pay by $100 but I would be holding 2 promo packs and I'd only be in to them at $50 a pop. Its a solid risk and just a $320 crap shoot.
I'd have 8 rookie AUTO's from the boxes + 2 limited autos (maybe auto patches) numbered to 25 or less. Not a bad deal for 10 autos and a real shot at something great. You;d only be in for $30 per hit and you'd have 82 packs of cards to open. Not great for the flippers that are complaining but still good for your average collector.

Word. That was exactly what I feared, however the NBA Finals one selling out in a mere hour or so threw me completely off. I was predicting well over $100/box just based on collectability and the trending alone-as long as Gurley, Mariota, Winston, Cooper, and David Johnson were there. I thought people's demand set market price for a set like this, that doesn't have an exact retail price? I suppose the checklist with guys like Denard Robinson (huh?) and Steve Smith bring it down a bit, but most sets have their duds.

If they wanted to raise the price point to get a promo pack, they should have made the box prices a little more calibrated to other internet sellers
Making a box a few bucks short of hitting the $150 is dirty pool. Thats why certified at $100 per box sold out right away. 3 boxes = 2 packs no fuss no math.

I am mostly curious to see what Panini is going to do to get rid of the remaining packs. Will they lower the price to get each pack? Will they put a few boxes on sale (doubt it)? Will they just sell off the remaining promo boxes to a big wholesaler? Will they just keep them to give out as promos at a later date?

Basketball always sells better than football, plus everything NBA was hot last year because of the rookie class

Certified was actually sold out before the promo even started. I don't know why they even listed it there

Yea, but I suppose they don't want to undersell the hobby shops that already have high prices. I have one here in town that I haven't visited in ages, because the prices are closer to icollectpanini.com's stupid ones than Blowout, DA, or Steel City

Now if they would overlap with the NBA Finals promo I'd be in LOL.
