I was just browsing around ebay and reminiscing on some older cards from when I first started collecting as a kid. This card popped up and I started wondering how much younger collectors go back and actually read up on the history of the hobby. I'll start with one that will always stand out to me as being a pretty memorable card.
Can any of you younger collectors explain why this card is special?
http://i67.tinypic.com/2uyqekx.jpg
Once we get this knocked out, anyone else can feel free to post up a card from yesteryear that is meaningful to us collectors who have been collecting since before memorabilia and autos were inserted in basically every product.

I know the answer to it so I won't answer it so early in the thread. BUT, I commented here to see what you are referring to as "younger collectors?"

I didn't know anything about this card until I just looked at the it now, but I'm fairly certain I know what it is now, is this the only card where "that" is shown? I'm assuming so.

For me, it would be anyone under the age of 25, or anyone who didn't get into the hobby until after 2000. It's completely subjective though.

And because of this layup, MJ hired him for the Bobcats coach.

Yes, because his jersey was stolen before the game. So he got the 12. I wonder if it had Jordan on the back or blank? Or some other name.
Was anybody #12 at the time?

This one isn't so much a trivia question as just an example of a time when memorabilia cards actually meant something. The following set was produced for the 1997-98 season and these cards simply have a reasonably sized swatch of a jersey in them. Not a patch even, just a plain 1 color piece of the jersey. Yet, they sell for hundreds of dollars still today because, at the time, Upper Deck didn't flood the market with "memorabilia" cards and the cards explicitly stated on the back that they were from game worn jerseys, worn by that specific player. There were only 23 cards in the set (22 different players, with Jordan having a regular version and an autographed version /23). They were inserted at a rate of 1:2,500 packs (or 1:69 boxes)! This Reggie Miller card just sold for $202 less than 2 weeks ago. The Kevin Johnson (probably the cheapest card in the set) sold for $73 last month. They still hold value because of the aforementioned characteristics. In the end Upper Deck was part of the undoing of the significance of memorabilia cards, but they had the right idea early on. I could say we need to be holding Panini to a higher standard but at this point I'm afraid the market has been so flooded that the effects are going to be irreversible, unless they just stop making memorabilia cards for several years (which isn't going to happen).

I do have a question about UD Game Jersey card.
Penny has 2 verisons in 97-98 and a card in 98-99. After 98-99, Penny moved to play in Phx. UD did not make another Orlando magic jersey card for him. UD made a Penny Hardaway Suns patch card in Ultimate.
So........where are the Penny Hardaway patch cutting from those Orlando Magic jerseys?

Very good question, and one that we might not actually like the answer for. Have they really NEVER made a Penny Hardaway card with a Magic patch in it?

ZERO magic patch card under Upper Deck/Topps/Skybox brand. Only Panini did it in recent years.

Great card OP, I remember pulling this card as a kid and noticing Jordan in the wrong jersey right away. Unfortunately, the card doesn't sell for much even though it's truly a 1/1 card as you won't see another card with Jordan wearing the number 12.
Either way, I still have this card today sitting in my old school binder mixed in with all my other Jordan cards from the early 90's.

That's pretty crazy. Have no choice but to assume UD destroyed them or lost them at some point. No reason to not use the patches if they had them.

1997-98 Metal Universe Titanium
Randomly inserted in hobby packs only at a rate of one in 72 packs, this 20-card set features some of the NBA's most explosive players on die cut cards. The cards are on clear plastic stock with the script in a light-blue foil.
1997-98 Metal Universe Titanium #1 Michael Jordan
1997-98 Metal Universe Titanium #2 Allen Iverson
1997-98 Metal Universe Titanium #3 Kobe Bryant
1997-98 Metal Universe Titanium #4 Shaquille O'Neal
1997-98 Metal Universe Titanium #5 Stephon Marbury
1997-98 Metal Universe Titanium #6 Marcus Camby
1997-98 Metal Universe Titanium #7 Anfernee Hardaway/Being Guarded by Michael Jordan
1997-98 Metal Universe Titanium #8 Kevin Garnett
1997-98 Metal Universe Titanium #9 Shareef Abdur-Rahim
1997-98 Metal Universe Titanium #10 Dennis Rodman
1997-98 Metal Universe Titanium #11 Ray Allen
1997-98 Metal Universe Titanium #12 Grant Hill
1997-98 Metal Universe Titanium #13 Kerry Kittles
1997-98 Metal Universe Titanium #14 Antoine Walker
1997-98 Metal Universe Titanium #15 Scottie Pippen
1997-98 Metal Universe Titanium #16 Damon Stoudamire
1997-98 Metal Universe Titanium #17 Shawn Kemp
1997-98 Metal Universe Titanium #18 Hakeem Olajuwon
1997-98 Metal Universe Titanium #19 Jerry Stackhouse
1997-98 Metal Universe Titanium #20 Juwan Howard
They're even more beautiful in person. I've got 5 from the set but I'll probably never actually put the whole set together. The Jordan and Kobe get pretty pricey, and then the Penny isn't far behind them. I was lucky enough to get the Garnett a little under what I expected at like $35 and the Stoudamire cost me just under $20.
I need to get new scans of the Stackhouse and Garnett. Not sure what happened with the color settings on those 2.

Here's some 90s trivia.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v628/gatorboymike/Cards/Vintage/Sets/1993/93006.jpg~original
The 1993-94 Fleer product had a set dedicated to Clyde Drexler. The first 12 cards in this set are numbered "x of 12" and were issued in packs like normal inserts. The next three were available as a mail-in offer and are numbered 13, 14 and 15. Most people only know about the first 15 cards, but there is a 16th Glide. Card #16 was available only to people who owned a subscription to Inside Stuff magazine and sent away for it, which almost no one did.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v628/gatorboymike/Cards/Vintage/Singles/1993/93006-016.jpg
Clyde #16 is so hard to find that it usually sells for about $200. Compare that to the Clyde auto cards from the same set that usually sell for $50-75. I heard a rumor once that there were only eight of the #16's in existence, although I think there are probably more than that, because I've seen five of them sell in the last 12 years, including the one I own.
Oh yes, and I paid one dollar for mine.
