Deal. You get an extra $1M this year Jacob, but when we sign you to a 6 year deal in the future, and you suck for a year, you have to give the $1M back.
OK?

its not the same. Degrom isn't signing his out of a protest of the system. The Mets have even come out and said we understand why he isn't signing it and there is no hard feelings. His agents and degrom have both said basically the samething.
It's different. Not the same "mistake" at all.

Agreed. It's not even close to the same. It's a "United" stance gesture more than anything.

And I don't think the Mets threatened to lower his salary to the league minimum.

I agree that young players should be able to get more money but performance clauses should also exist in longer term deals. Clubs already pay a high price signing FA for long term contracts and it would be impossible to sign young guys for big money.

Sucks to be Degrom. He's gonna be an old man when he becomes a free agent. He should sign an extension ASAP

They can't have it both ways. Players either get "underpaid" earlier in their career and sign a deal to get a nice payday and eat up some FA years (like Wong just did) or get underpaid and bet on themselves that they can stay healthy and get to FA and get that big payday. They can't get both.
If your a pitcher you should get some money as soon as you can to take care of yourself and family for a long time. Injury risk is to high. If I'm a position player I'm holding off as long as you can. Chance of major career ending injury is rare. For every Ian Desmond(player who didn't take deal early and misses out ) there is a Vernon wells(player who took a deal earlier and never lived up to it).

Right. It really sounds like the mets said "here is what you are getting paid" and degroms people and him said "that's cool but I can't sign it out of principle. No hard feelings" and mets said "cool"
Also I'm betting pirates didn't threaten to lower Coles salary. If I'm a betting man id say they gave Cole the deal and boras balked and through a fit and they said something like"well it's within the rule for us to lower your salary" and boras turned that into a threat. And I don't blame the bucs. When Cole starts making real money he won't be on their team anyway. Why pay him more then you have to now? Use him for cheap now and then have the other guy pay him the big bucs

Yes. I'm sure the Red Sox will trade for those two.

Funny how performance clauses are an issue only when the players' perform ABOVE their contract. Just try asking for some back when they suck...

....and the proposed change to the agreement will be?
Hard to believe owners will allow a major overhaul to the system without veterans conceding a lot. And seeing that veterans have all the pull in the Player's Association, it's hard to envision them sticking their neck out for players that haven't paid their dues like they had to.

Right. Nothing is going to change.
Keith law said the MLB told the teams that they should never pay the players more then they have to. That there is truth that if you give them a deal young they will give you a discount on the second one.
It's a smart way to do business.
