View Full Version : I want you people to start doing 90's/early 00's group breaks...

Please, for the love of god, someone get the ball rolling on this.
I'm not being sarcastic when I say this....
I would literally pay a monthly fee just to be able to watch 90s group break streams/videos.
I would trade my 10 dollar a month netflix subscription for a 90s box break subscription. I scour youtube from time to time just to see if there are any new old school breaks, but they are WAY too few and far between.
C'mon Blowout, smarten up.

As it can probably be inferred from what I said in my original post, I couldn't disagree more.
Especially for sets with lackluster base cards, exercising patient anticipation is precisely why I find them so entertaining.
man that will just be a bloodbath...
Couldn't this be said for 75% of modern breaks? I must be missing something here...

It could work for a small group. Full cases are few and far between, but if 10-15 guys threw in 10-20 bucks a month, it could go towards a monthly box. Just gotta go in knowing only one card is returning their money back every month

I'm game. eBay has a box of 98-99 thunder that I've been watching but way outa my budget. Anyone else have a box they want to nominate. There is a box of 2000-01 topps gold label on Beckett marketplace. Id also be interested in any late 90s ultra boxes. I'd do 10$ for dibs on any Ron Harper cards plus a second round pick. I'd obviously lose money but I think I'd be fun and if only once per month I'd be down... Would just call it entertainment cost :)

Id definitely be down for this. The problem would be getting blowout to purchase the product for the break.

They are out there but are very rare and get very expensive. If we want to do cases of 90's product it will likely need to be Finest or Chrome as they seem to be the ones that are "easiest" to find. I have busted several cases of 96-97 series 2 Topps, 98-99 Bowmans Best, and 98-99 Finest(series 1 and 2) over the last few years. They are all a pretty good time. 97-98 Finest cases come up for sale every once in awhile and they are a blast as well. 3 or 4 years ago somebody had a 97-98 Fleer Ultra 30 box case on Ebay. I almost bought it several times. I also saw a 16 or 20 box case, can't remember for sure, of 98-99 Metal Universe at the National a few years ago. Those would have been some awesome breaks.

There's really no chance in hell this would ever work.
I've opened plenty of 90s boxes with nothing to show for it.
2 years ago I opened 20 boxes of 97 E-X2001 with a current market value of $8,000-$10,000.
Got 2 Credentials of Webber and no-name rc that resold for around $900. Sold the inserts and some sets for around $100-200.
So in the end, I gave up $10,000 in wax boxes for $1200 in cards.
That's basically how all 90's boxes are. You will lose about 90% of your money busting these products.
And what would happen if you did hit a big cards...say for instance, the 97 E-X2001 Credentials 1/1 of Grant Hill. You got one guy with a 5 figure card, and the rest get 50 cent base cards.

Yeah, your pretty spot on for the most part. I used to bust a ton of the higher end boxes but now try to stay in the $50-150 range. I've pulled some incredible cards though and have actually came out in pretty good shape. The worst that I did was when I busted 10 boxes of 96-97 EX 2000 a few years ago. Only 2 of my Kobe's that I hit were BGS 9's and the rest weren't high grade at all. I only hit 1 A Cut Above of Iverson which graded a PSA 10, and all of my credentials were of common players. I did bust 25+ boxes of 98-99 Topps Series 2 hobby(about 20 boxes) and the rest were jumbos. In the first box I hit a Jordan red label which paid for everything plus over $1000 in profit. Boxes in that price range are the way to go.....but are very boring in comparison to EX, Metal, Flair Showcase, SPx.....etc

They used to carry them. I used to buy quite a bit from them about 5-6 years ago. It's hard to find them cheap enough for them to make much money I bet. Everybody knows EBay prices so it's hard for online retailers to mark up much above eBay.

I think this system could work very very well for player collectors. I truly would be happy if a fellow player collector hit a rare card. If a Toni Kukoc, Charles Barkley, Chris Webber, Larry Johnson, Patrick Ewing, Dominique Wilkins, Gary Payton, etc etc... card came up I would honestly be happy for the guy who PCs that player to get the hit.
On the other hand, if it is some team random or investment opportunity... yeah it would stink to see someone else hit a rare 1/1 or green PMG knowing it likely isnt even going to stay in their PC.

I never meant to imply that this should even necessarily be a Blowout-ran thing. I wanted to group together a bunch of people so we could get the process going on our own. There are a handful of members I could think of on here that are true collectors and should be involved in something like this.
Like Harper said, this wouldn't even be about getting hits. Any flippers could go take a walk. This would be purely about enjoying whatever last remnants of what's still out there lying in boxes, and recording each break as a way to document it. The spectacle of it is half the fun, I know for a fact this wouldn't be boring in the slightest for many of us.

Said members, in theory. It's not like I've actually spoken to them, but you're telling me a group of about 10 people wouldn't throw up money for say 1 box a month to do this? I'd be down.
12 of us throwing 10 bucks one month could open a 97-98 Finest box, for example. Would be awesome. I just see too much 90s fanatic manpower on here for something like this not to be organized.

that's right around average for those boxes. No chase cards in there for my main man Mitch though.
Here are boxes that (typically) go under $100 that I would like to see:
94-95 Finest (preferably series 2 for MJs :D )
94-95 Emotion
95-96 SP
95-96 Skybox (NOTHING valuable in these, but SO many cool-looking inserts)
96-97 Topps series 2 (whichever series has the Kobe RC, I think it's 2 haha)
96-97 Skybox retail series 1 for Kobe RCs (hobby boxes go higher than $100+)
96-97 UD series 1 (again for Kobe RCs)
96-97 through 98-99 Stadium Club (cheap, a few chases, maybe a printing plate?)
97-98 Bowman's Best (right on the fringe of $100- which sucks b/c 3 years ago I was busting these for $55 a box! Broke 8-10 boxes pulled 3 MJ refractors alone!)
98-99 Finest (either series)
98-99 Topps Chrome
99-00 Finest (either series)
Boxes over $100 but that wouldn't break the bank:
95-96 Finest
96 or 97 SPx
96-97 Skybox hobby
97-98 Finest
97-98 Chrome
97-98 Diamond Vision (this one and Chrome can occasionally be found under $100 if you're fortunate)
97-98 Upper Deck (MJ game jersey, anyone??)
98-99 SP Authentic
Expensive boxes I would buy all of should I win the powerball:
96-97 Bowman's Best (retail boxes can be had around $175, hobby $200-$250)
96-97 Chrome (these were $50 a box at Walmart when they came out- now they go for $800. If only we knew!!)
97-98 SPx (typically $225 a box, come up occasionally)
97-98 SP Authentic (same price, come up even less often)
any of the first 3 years of EX or Flair Showcase (96-97 through 98-99)
1998 MJx (I've got the Bulls!)
97-98 Metal or 98-99 Metal (PMG huntin')
That's my two cents :D

^ solid list right there.
I'm happy to say I have a box arriving either tomorrow or Tuesday that would fall into the first category. I would def amend it to include what's on my way, I won't say what it is just yet but I plan to make a box break thread for it.
Really excited since the last time I opened a 90s box was about a year and a half ago.

I see boxes of 1997-98 Hoops Series 1 and 2 on ebay hovering around $100 (but they don't seem to be moving).
This was one of my favorite sets growing up. What would be a good price for these boxes, and is there anything desirable in them aside from Autographics? (if you know of any major differences between Series 1 and 2, please let me know as well)

Only thing really worth it aside from the autographics in series 1 would be the Hooperstars inserts, and i think only MJ has any decent value. Series 2 has the 9-1-1 set (1:288) and High Voltage set that are 1 per box, then there's the rare ones numbered to 500 (maybe like 1 or 2 per case?)
Also, all the RC's are worth pennies iirc.
The High Voltage 500 are gorgeous, you've prob seen pics of those, but I really like how these look too...
http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/PIIAAOSwymxVKyFf/s-l400.jpg
All that said, I still don't think it's worth it at $100 a box, especially for series 1.
Btw, can someone clarify retail vs. hobby on these? I know the High Voltages are hobby, were the 9-1-1's retail-only?

I organized such a group break a couple of years ago: 26 collectors all had to chose a player or more (that they collect), and they also had a random team for all the other cards. I was the only judge as to who could participate or not. I would not accept someone who has only a handful of Jordans, Kobes, or Iversons in his "PC". The priority was for longtime collectors or collectors with a sizeable collection, who I know would not flip the card a few weeks after.
I opened 7 boxes of Stadium Club from 1997 to 2000, hoping for a printing plate (ended up with one from Darrell Armstrong), as well as a box a 99-00 Topps Gold Label!

I consider myself a Jordan collector, but I don't have anything high-end. I do have 400+ cards of his, plus duplicates, and tons of memorabilia, like posters, watches, figurines, complete jumbo sets, and everything else I can find, lol.

holy S*%& you hit SEVEN legacies in one box? I broke a box of 97-98 Flair and I kid you not the most valuable card I hit was a row 2 rookie of T-Mac. No Duncans, no legacies, not even a Jordan row 3 it was a disaster.

That´s the problem with all the wax from the 90`s. Prices are so high, that you´ll almost need to pull one of let´s say the two or three best cards of the product. How are the chances?
Was opening lately 3 Boxes from the 90`s, paid like 360$ and had maybe 30 $ of cards in return. That´s the risk.

Already busted and zilch. From numbering on boxes it looked like they could have come from 2 different cases. I was going to sell a few but the boxes were in rough shape. I bought from the original purchaser. Also bought 98-99 Flair from the same guy which I pulled a Kobe Legacy so I was pretty hyped for these Metal boxes.
It makes me wonder the rate of pmgs for the championship series. One per case if that?

That's $650 per box roughly. I just opened 9 boxes 6 months ago at $330 per box and hit absolutely nothing. The boxes came from the original shop owner too. These boxes can be tough sometimes for sure.
