View Full Version : Horrible Experience (Press Pass Redemption)

I'm really crushed right now. I'm sure a lot of people reading this have had similar experiences with dreaded redemptions. I generally try to avoid older products with known redemptions, but in this case, it did not occur to me that the best autograph in the product was going to be a redemption.
I am in the midst of my worst streak of bad luck since I got back into cards about 3 months ago and then this happens...
I was doing 2011 Press Pass Legends pack breaks trying to get all the hits out of the box. All along I'm obviously hoping for Cam Newton, Julio Jones or AJ Green since those are the big names from the 2011 draft.
So the first couple hits come out and fortunately one of them was a Michael Irvin auto /50 which is cool but when you are paying $6.50/pack that is not the card you are hunting.
Two hits later the breaker unveils a player with a Penn State helmet and below that a redemption sticker where the autograph would normally be.
I'm already expecting the worst and then when he flips the card over it is confirmed...
CAMERON NEWTON
This is the first redemption I've pulled that I can't do anything about. I've also pulled some low end 2007 Contenders redemptions but from what I have been told Panini still honors those.
Is there ANY chance that I can somehow redeem this card? Even if its for a replacement? And If not now, maybe in the future?

Why don't you just email them and try to talk to a customer service rep

That's why you gotta do your homework, man.
Anytime you buy older wax you need to figure who the redemptions are before you decide to purchase or not.
Bummer.

Yep, your out of luck. What sucks worse is that they were the best at redeeming expired redemptions.
That's why any old Fleer basketball is a total crapshoot.

Press Pass closed their doors a few years ago, there's really nothing you can do about redemptions at all.

Sadly nothing can be done. Before they went out of business they would have helped you out. They had the best CC in the business. They closed the doors and actually they just announced they were shutting down completely one day. So I don't think people who had redemptions got anything.
Which stinks because I loved their Legends sets.

That's a tough one. Redemptions and sticker autographs are really the worst. i get that it is part of the deal, but still...

Ummm Penn State?
Its a non licensed product so they can't have logos so his auburn helmet is all white with a blue jersey..it does look like Penn state at 1st glance.
Sorry op but at least the product is cheap and the cam isn't worth much plus the company is out of business....its not like topps or upper deck who have some redemptions worth thousands and if they are expired they tell you to f off even though they are still in business.

Well you guys pretty much confirmed what I expected to hear unfortunately.
At this point, I am thinking I might as well send it in to the freakin Carolina Panthers and hope for a miracle because at least there's a chance of a miracle while there is no chance of all with Press Pass since they do not exist.
Not to mention, if you saw how this particular redemption card looked:
http://i.imgur.com/cF2rAqW.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/IfRPOQm.jpg
So if there is ANY good news to come from this I guess I would rather it be an actual card with a sticker on it than one of those pieces of cardboard with redemption code because IF I was ever lucky enough to get Cam Newton's autograph - whether in person or in the mail - it would be just as authentic if I took off the sticker and was able to get Cam Newton to sign the card directly with a sharpie assuming the sticker does not take any of the picture off with it..
And sorry if my OP was misleading but I did not buy it from a shop, I bought it from a Live Breaker website and I always know there are redemptions in these products but A) I had RARELY seen redemptions in Press Pass i mean almost never! and B) I thought IF there was a redemption it would not be the #1 rookie in the product. But that is no excuse because I was going for Cam so I should have double checked.
BUT the breaker did feel so bad for me that he refunded me for 2 packs lol not that it was much consolation since I purchased most packs in the box and honestly there aren't too many ways they can make you feel better in that case.

I just noticed the name at the bottom of the card
DJ Kazmierczak Sr. Vice President at Press Pass, Inc.
DJ is now VP of Sales/Product Development at Panini America
I suppose it's good to know that at least the Senior VP at Press Pass at the time is still in the business with the top company, even if press pass is out, and my hopes have gone up just a tad bit (which is not saying much because it was close to completely hopeless before this)
I am not sure how likely it is that I will hear back from DJ, much less hear back with good news, but I will keep everyone posted because if I have ANY type of success here I would think it's potentially good news for anyone else with Press Pass redemptions.
That said, I do not know how long he was with the company, but he certainly had an important role in 2011.
Stay tuned...

Shop owner does not owe him anything on a sealed box. That's a risk with older products.
Not sure how this would rate as a horrible experience seems more like an uninformed purchase.

Last week, I get an e-mail from Panini. The same type of e-mail that you get from them when they ship one of your redemptions, except this one was different, it was literally labeled:

I just wanted to reiterate whats already been said.. PP is no longer a business, unfortunately.
However, I think you have a pretty good idea.. send it into the team, and see if Cam signs it, and sends it back.
I dont even feel that it would require a miracle. You could even include a short, but sweet letter indicating that youre a card collector that pulled this, cannot redeem it, and would like to request that Cam sign it for you.
At this point, theres nothing to lose..

The flood gates are about to open. A lot of people cant get Panini redemptions filled but then again they can fill Press Pass redemptions.
DJ should be fired for this. Panini can't fill my Odell redemptions from 2014 but they can take care of your Press Pass gripe?
I've been shorted a hit from one of their products and was told to piss off. But you pull a redemption from a former competitor and they hook you up?
Good for you I guess...

I sent it to the same address that takes 2007 Playoff Contenders redemptions - which I found on this forum and used successfully in the past as well - except I addressed to his attention and I took the time to write a 1 page letter explaining my frustration about the whole thing and how I found his name basically as my last resort and was sending it to them with nothing to lose. It was that or get $3 on ebay or do nothing. And I think it would have been pointless to go with the latter two options.

Is that Panini's fault or is that Odell Beckham's fault? It's one thing if Odell Beckham has signed the cards and Panini is with-holding them from you for some reason, but if ODB hasn't signed his cards yet, what do you really expect?
I'm waiting on a 2013 Exquisite ODB XRC Auto bv $300. How do you think I feel about that? But I'm not about to blame it on Upper Deck. Not coincidentally, it's a totally different company, and yet it's the SAME player not signing his cards... Odell Beckham Jr... more of a diva than Posh Beckham..
Anyway, as much as I'd hate to do it, I'm about to give up on my ODB redemptions and ask for an equal value replacement, and if that's an option with Panini, I would request the same thing from them unless you want to continue to wait it out.

The IOU I have is with Panini, not Odell. I didn't buy a case of cards from Odell and get stuck with a redemption. If I trusted them enough to substitute a different card I would have over a year ago. But apparently they give out the better cards on hand to people that hold redemptions from one of their competitors products.
Again I am happy for you! The fact that you were able to get something for nothing is great. Well done Sir.
But if DJ worked for me, and I found out he took my stock to satisfy a competitors (former or not) expired redemption I would not be happy.
In the meantime, I get shorted a hit from buying one of THEIR products and I'm fed the standard line about "averages". So I give them my money and I don't get an autograph in a $100 box of cards and I have zero resolve. But you buy a box thats 5 years old, pull an expired redemption that Panini had zero to do with and they send you a legendary RB autograph numbered to 50?

OP, there will be plenty of "shade" throw out in this thread. I hope you don't take it personally. I don't think anyone is mad about your actions. The anger is that Panini seems to have a very fickle way of taking care of (or not at all) its customers. Some people end up with the best customer service you could ask for with grand gestures to keep them satisfied. Myself (and MANY others) have been treated like we're beggars grasping at the cape of the King.

well said (did i REALLY just say that)
OP - this is really not a knock on you (not your fault at all, you simply sent the card in), but i do agree panini should be upset with the person that sent you a card.
panini has no responsibility to fulfill a press pass obligation.

Odell has an autograph deal through Steiner Sports. This limits the number of autographs he can sign, for card companies, Steiner itself, for friends/family and even for charity.
Panini, Upper Deck, Topps ect all over-issued the number of autographs they thought they'd be able to get a #12 pick WR to sign. Now everyone has to wait in line as Odell has limitations on the number of signatures he's legally allowed to sign in a calendar year.
The fact we've got former employees of Press Pass (a company that went bankrupt) now giving out free cards for obligations not related to its new employer is not how I'd want my employees acting. But good luck Panini and don't hold your breath on those ODB auto's ... Steiner's in no rush to have these card companies flood the market with his signature.

They can't make the player sign any faster. They can prod, poke, and call them as much as they like, but the player will sign at their own pace, and it sucks for the us.
I broke a case of 2024 Select and am still waiting on some redemptions from it, including a patch auto from Carlos Hyde /15 and an Odell Beckham Jr. auto /50. Does it disappoint me to see Hyde having autos in other products that released after Select? Sure does, but it is part of the gamble of breaking boxes. Does it suck that they have have redeemed the basic jersey auto of Beckham from the same set numbered to 199, but I still am waiting on my shorter print auto? Yep, but it will get signed. There is no need to call for someone's job because someone did a nice thing for someone once. Take it as a nice story and leave it there.

I see you have a time machine. But this really has nothing to do with the rant...
DJ gave away someone else property to satisfy a redemption from another company. If the same effort was put into replacing and fulfilling outstanding redemptions from his own company maybe the people in this thread would be singing a different tune.
Right now many of us are on the hook waiting for them to make good on their own IOU's. Others have been ignored for asking about replacements for missing hits. And some others have been sent lower value cards in place of the redemptions that werent made.
Yet some guy breaks a box of 5 year old product from a competitor and he is satisfied almost immediately. Its a shame. But great for OP!

So why does Panini or any company for that matter include redemptions in their packs if they don't have the card on hand? I feel like if they don't have it or don't know when they'll get it signed, don't include it.

uh... It's Panini's fault.
Odell doesn't run Panini. He didn't create a product and put his name on a checklist. He didn't bait and switch customers. Panini knows they will not be able to fill many redemptions but they add them to the checklist anyway. Redemptions are a total scam.
They always try to blame the athlete, but Panini is solely responsible.

No one would ever complain about that.
Who am I kidding, people complain about everything on here.
No, silly.
If the card literally does not exist, then it shouldn't be included on a checklist to begin with.
If card companies can charge top dollar for hobby boxes and then just back out on the advertised deal, they might as well promote that they're also redeeming cards with signed written confessions by OJ Simpson. You won't get that either, but what the heck, right? It wouldn't be the company's fault.

I guess I see it differently than most people. I didn't think this thread was going to turn into a discussion about outstanding redemptions and shorted hits. I'll explain why I feel that way and then that's it for me.
First off, I have at least a dozen outstanding redemptions with Panini as well. I've also been shorted a hit and tried to get a hold of Panini through the phone and couldn't even get anyone to answer. To date my success rate with getting through to a live person on the phone at Panini is 0%. I even have a thread about that on THIS board from 6/14 entitled "Apparently Panini harder to get a hold of than the president"
There isn't really any point in calling them about an outstanding redemption because we already know what's going on there, but when I tried to get through to them about my shorted hit, I called Panini's GENERAL customer service line or GENERAL customer service e-mail and I agree - THE SERVICE SUCKS - but I believe that's a different department and maybe those are the guys we should be calling to be fired, if anyone.
You and I do not know DJ's reasons behind making the decision that he made. It is possible that it's as simple as he found a letter on his desk that was carefully written to him without any anger, demand or entitlement and simply decided to do something nice in return. It is possible that deed came at his own expense. We don't know and we shouldn't rush to judgment about it.
But here's the best part to me:
Everyone with outstanding redemptions from Panini has an opportunity to get a replacement card which is the exact same thing that I received!
At the end of the day, I received an equal value replacement for the card that I initially pulled and everyone out there with an outstanding redemption has the opportunity to do the same thing!!!
It's not like they aren't offering you a substitute card - which is in essence what this guy decided to do for me possibly out of his own expense.
And it probably was out of his own pocket because - think about it - I'm pretty sure that anyone kind enough to do something like that isn't going to "steal" the card from his own company and risk their job over someone they don't know with nothing to gain.
It was probably his own decision at his own expense to essentially give me a replacement card and I'm very thankful to be the recipient of it.
You can get a replacement card too and if YOU don't want to do it that's fine, but that's your decision!
But as far as shorted hits go, yeah, I don't get it either, but I think my chances would be better if I had someone specific to take that problem to instead of being limited to Panini's crappy general customer support line that doesn't answer.
In this case, I took my problem to a specific person, the only person I could find with a strong link to the previous company.

No, silly.
Don't refer to me as that ever again.

It's called projection, any company projects that a card of player x will be made for the set (clearly the cards are made in most cases and either never signed or never agreed upon). The companies project all Photoshoot participants will be in the set theoretically before the product is even designed. Sometimes they audible and remove players for various reasons (lack of sales, cut before the season starts, want too much money for rookie signings, were a nice idea but won't sign after the fact [especially true with some veterans] etc.) so they don't clutter up the checklist.

This is a non-sequitor, the expectation is that all players will honor the contract they sign months ahead of time when they agree to be a part of the Rookie Premier or sign an autograph contract with said company. The contracts usually spell out that they won't get paid unless they sign or get paid for a certain number of autographs as they come back to the company, so a lot of these guys couldn't be bothered (especially if they're first round picks with lots of guaranteed money). This is why lower round and UDFA guys sign so much, it's free money to them.
O'Dell is a perfect example of someone who not only doesn't need the money, but has his mother running the show, so his stuff is going to be hit or miss thanks to complications.

Regardless, the company is still promising to offer something that it doesn't have. Theoretically What if ALL the players decide to procrastinate and then never sign? Would all the boxes simply get distributed with countless (ultimately worthless) redemption cards?
