Could Doc Emrick be the most annoying play by play announcer of all time? How many times must the guy say "RICOCHET" or "HURRIED SHOT" during a broadcast? over and under set at 1 million.

No way. Gary Thorne was the worst ever; ESPN gave that guy a reign of terror over hockey fans for years. Emrick is just getting old.

I actually liked Gary Thorne with Bill Clement. Good ol days when ESPN used to cover hockey. That theme song was sweet too.

Getting old has nothing to do with it. Doc Emrick was annoying 20 years ago and he's still annoying now.

Gary Thorne was a moron. I listened to him confuse Sakic with Yzerman for most of a playoff game. Because they both wore #19. Doc has never done that. Hell, I'd understand bashing Maguire because he is by far the most annoying thing talking on a hockey broadcast. Emrick ain't my favorite, but I know I dislike others a lot more.

Gary Thorne also didn't go thru an entire broadcast saying ricochet.

He probably couldn't pronounce it. He was a baseball putz that ESPN threw on hockey during baseball's offseason.

I'll take him over the TSN/Sportsnet guys any day. Hockey Night in Canada is torcher anymore. It doesn't matter who the Leafs or Canadiens are playing, you would swear they are the only team on the ice. It could be 6-1 for the visiting team, and all you hear is how this Leaf is playing hard, and this Leaf was awesome in the AHL, and the Leafs are going to draft.....

whoever the ringer was that did game 4 of the rangers/penguins was god awful... and apropos of nothing, i think kevin weekes is the best analyst of anyone on NHLN or NBCSN. oh, and F mike milbury.

Kevin Weekes is too much of an ass kisser. I prefer somebody who's not afraid of being vocal or critical like Jeremy Roenick or Milbury(even though he was arguably the worst executive of all time)

Really? I grew up on Doc (Devils games) and Gary (Mets games) ... love those guys. Some of the best, enthusiastic play by play guys around.

Could listen to them all day. Verne L a close 3rd.

I second your view on Doc. My favorite hockey guy aside from Mike Lange who sadly only does radio now.

IMO, Emrick is the best play by play guy around. And if you thought Gary Thorne was bad at play by play for hockey (I thought he was decent) you should have to suffer hearing him do O's baseball every night like I do in Baltimore. It is barely listenable.

It always bugged me when Emrick would say Brooks Or"peck" instead of Or"pik". Though that might have been the other announcer on NBC Sports. Not quite sure, I know one of them pronounced Orpik's name wrong all the time.

i also like emrick, which i probably should have mentioned in my first post, but i was feeling cranky.

he's just about the ONLY announcer out there that will continue to mention what college someone played at even years after they left. as a BU alum and NCAA hockey fan, i LOVE to hear it... even when he's referring to Chris Kreider and Kevin Hayes as BC Eagles.

This right here. "Waffleboarded" haha ohhhhh man. The guy says the same thing over and over again I can't stand it. Gotta watch on mute sometimes

Just for the record I am a Devils fan so I grew up listening to Doc. He seems like a great guy and all but that doesn't change the fact he's annoying AF as a broadcaster

Had to chime in on this one as the sport of hockey has suffered over the last few years, the folks that are still watching these games are very fortunate to have a guy like Emrick doing the play by play, he is without a doubt still one of the best out there!

Just read this online, without a team from Canada playing in this years playoffs TV ratings have been significantly down outside of the Midwest for obvious reasons. Viewership in Canada is down by whopping 60% making this years TV ratings one of the lowest in years for a sport that is already struggling to keep fans!

Y'all need to hear Bob Miller do play by play if you have yet to do so. His warm and welcoming voice makes every game a great one to watch/listen to.
