[QUOTE=Skipscards;14400374]eTopps did a great set called “Cards That Never Were”. I have all but the Mattingly. Here’s a few examples:

Wade Boggs is a fun case. He debuted in the Majors in April of 1982 so he obviously should have been in 82 Topps Traded. But he was drafted and in the minors as an 18-year-old back in 1976. If the current product range and composition existed back then, he might have had cards anytime from 1976 to 1982. Imagine a 1976 Bowman Draft set. Floyd Bannister would have been the big name back then, probably, but Rickey Henderson would the biggest card now, assuming they included him as a 4th rounder. Mike Scioscia, and Alan Trammell would be key cards, too. Boggs, Ozzie Smith, and Jack Morris, too, among others, but they weren't drafted until rounds 6-7 so might not be in there.

1952 Topps Ted Williams and Stan Musial
1986 Topps Fred McGriff
1985 Topps Will Clark Olympic Card (similar to McGwire)
1983 Topps Traded Mattingly

If only Donruss started making rookies/update sets a couple years earlier then we could have 1984 Donruss Puckett, Clemens, Gooden, Saberhagen possibly followed by a 1985 Canseco.

I'm not a Jeter collector but imagine what a 1993 Finest refractor would go for. We did get the 2001 Finest Retro which is better than nothing.

But, one card I've always been mildly annoyed not seeing is a 1990 Upper Deck Frank Thomas. They couldn't even get him in the high number series. #fail

That's why I love the 2002 Donruss Originals What If set:

Honestly there are a few cards I REALLY wish I could find / existed. As a hoarder of these things- I'd love for Topps to include these in a what if set.

1998 Topps Flagship Mike Piazza Marlins
1998 Topps Finest Mike Piazza Marlins
1998 Topps Finest Stadium Stars Piazza Marlins
1998 Donruss Crusade Piazza Marlins

A late 1960s Topps card of brothers Felipe, Matty and Jesus Alou.

Looking through listings of Topps Heritage dual autos got me thinking. I want an 80's themed on-card dual autograph of Fernando Valenzuela and Orel Hershiser. Those guys don't have many pack-pulled autographed cards.

It will probably never happen though

*kicks rock

That would be an absolute beaut. Growing up in LA those two are bonafide legends. Neither had a peak long enough to be considered all time MLB greats per se but in their prime both were borderline unhittable ACES at the pinnacle of the game.

A Topps card of every all time great that shows their full career stats the year after they retire (some have it - Mantle for example, but a lot don't).

1977 Topps Hank Aaron
1961 Topps Ted Williams
1964 Topps Stan Musial
1952 Topps Joe Dimaggio
1957 Topps Jackie Robinson
1974 Topps Willie Mays

And on and on...

BlowoutBuzz 11-15-2024 10:49 PM

I figured we needed to see a Paul Skenes variation that should have been made ... LOL.

Would be an amazing SSP! That card would be so expensive, but it is pretty fantastic image.

2003 Topps Heritage refractors would look very cool in a black parallel, given the colorful backgrounds.

A 1993 Select Chase Stars Derek Jeter with the dufex finish would’ve been great.

A 2001 SP Authentic Chirography Ichiro kanji auto and Japanese text would’ve been crazy cool.

If booklet cards had been a thing in the early 2000s, I would’ve liked to see Upper Deck do a set commemorating the 2000 Subway Series. Do a patch auto for each position on the team. Like the Catcher card would be Piazza on one side and Posada on the other.

I wish Topps or any other card company had the foresight to do this with legends. That’s why I love the Clemente and Mantle card since it has all their stats.

What cards do i wish existed.....ok here goes!

A 1991 Topps Desert Shield Tiffany / print run 500 with M. Rivera + P. Martinez + Piazza + Jones and then the usual stars (Griffey + Thomas etc.)

DynaEtch 11-16-2024 03:30 PM

Probably an oddball one to most, but here’s one I’d go for.

In 1996 Finest there was a checklist that even had a refractor parallel (gold in series 1, bronze in series 2).

I think it’d have been cool to do a checklist in 1997 Finest…and go all out, up through the parallels. An embossed, refractor, even gold embossed diecut refractor checklist lol. Silly to most, but exactly the quirky thing that is right up my alley and I’d be all over that GER checklist being the unique thing it is.

Absolutely. How about no 1967 Topps Sandy Koufax? The guy retired suddenly, but also won the NL CYA after going 27-9 and his second straight Triple Crown. All we got was a League Leader card. It’s pathetic. Also, not as big of a deal, but Topps also didn’t produce a 2008 Craig Biggio flagship after he got his 3,000th hit and retired after the season in 2007. Plenty of cards of guys who never made an All Star team much lasted a year in MLB but to not have cards of ATGs like this is gross negligence

I didn’t realize how much I need to see a 1993 Donruss Jeter but I do. The 2001 Fleer Jeter autos are amazing so this is the only one left to be done IMO.

There's one glaring issue though.

Mantle retired in spring training 1969, so his card that year was just a regular card, not intentionally a capstone last card. It's good when it happens but they've made strange choices over the years. Like Brooks Robinson has a record breaker card in 1978 Topps, but no base card even though he had publicly retired at the end of the 1977 season. I chased the base 2023 Topps Albert Pujols rainbow for this reason as his stats deserve encapsulation.

That being Panini owning Donruss or is there something else?

There is an oddball card out there. Not sure who made it.

You can't show up months later after I forgot my punchline.

With all the hullabaloo surrounding PMGs these days I wish they had made red and greens for '97 Baseball. They only exist for Football and Basketball.

There are a lot of people out there making very high quality custom cards.....

Pretty much any "Card That Never Was" can be made for you these days for around $10....
