Gotta find an article that Tony Clark is quoted in.

There was a memo to players from the head of the MLBPA explaining the deal. Again, I assume the number includes the ownership stake that the union is getting in the new venture.
If so, the huge weakness of Topps going public is laid bare: they couldn’t match the equity offer because of their naive move to use a SPAC and instead bankrupted themselves over the ill advised strategy Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Did MLB/MLBPA even think about issuing multiple licenses?
Maybe they offer a license to Topps, Fanatics, and UD each for 4x the current rate. With all the money coming into the sports card market, new record sales being set all the time...non-exclusive licenses would still have been incredibly valuable. |
If they let MUDS fail, theoretically could Topps them offer the equity to match / beat Fanatics?
Maybe we see some gamesmanship in the next week or so… Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Manfred is commissioner of MLB not MLBPA. Even if you got MLB to do a turnaround and go back to Topps it would not matter because no way in hell is MLBPA giving that money opportunity back.
Well then we give both MLB and MLBPA the stink. This is trash, The Fanatics website is so overpriced I can't believe what they'll do to cards. |
MLBPA also signed with Fanatics meaning no more Panini or Non-Logo'ed cards of current players unless they're not in MLBPA
Do we know for sure that the Panini license ends at the same time? The articles all reference just Topps |

Topps it sounds like could not afford the Fanatics rate and UD sure as heck could not either. |

The big money controls this game period. Fanatics would say, take our 10X or we are out entirely. Then you are left with Topps saying why should we pay more, you have no other options. |
[B]NBA and NBPA too (in case you didn't know)

Anyone remember 2009 Ultimate Baseball by Upper Deck? It was a major dump of incredible patches and some nice overall cards. Actually one do the better products over the years all because they had no more license.
I’m guessing we could see the same from Topps |
Do we know for sure that the Panini license ends at the same time? The articles all reference just Topps
No, Panini NFL ends in 2025 and NBA in 2022 (I may have those dates mixed up) |
Where did it say that Fanatics paid 10X what Topps paid in 2020?
If Fanatics did that we are all doomed. That essentially means that for Fanatics to make a profit, sales need to 10X from Topps 2020 baseline number which means: -10x more product and/or -10x higher print run when print runs are already stuipd high and/or -10x less autographs because yah know those cost money and/or -10x less REAL GAME USED items because yeah, yah know those cost money too and Fanatics has an endless supply of replica swatches from jerseys to gloves, helmets, balls, etc. Endless supply of worthless junk to insert into cardboard.
So what you’re saying is if it’s true it will continue on Topps current trajectory? |
[B]NBA and NBPA too (in case you didn't know)

Fanatics also does deals with brick & mortar stores. For example they have a long-term deal with Kohl’s now so in the future you might go somewhere like that to get wax instead of your LCS.
