No clue, but I'd see them trying. Suppose I should say it would only be a ban on signing for Topps/Panini/other card companies, not autograph deals in general.

There are other examples out there in other sports where players can't take sponsorship deals that would conflict with official league partnerships. I could see the Fanatics thing be that type of arrangement.

Someone posted earlier that Fanatics is worth roughly $13 billion.....if they offered $200 million for the MLBPA annual license, that is a LOT of $$$ considering that they have no intellectual property to back up the license. And who knows what they are playing MLB for the MLB license?

You mean if you were Fanatics, you'd put that clause in? The MLBPA got paid, they don't care what the players do. The MLBPA, and all player's associations, are run by a bunch of lawyers. Listen to some of the retired guys talk about this, the PA heads don't always act in the best interest of the players. Kind of like why the MLBPA doesn't care about the minors, and don't vote to add them in. But Tony Clark is going to enjoy a nice big bonus from this

I think the actual size of the deal remains unknown. Saying it is 10x bigger than any deal previously struck may not be apples to apples. Maybe this deal is for a longer time period and that's part of the reason it is 10x bigger.

I agree this is the biggest change. We have seen changes every decade though since the 80’s. We still don’t know if Fanatics will buy or lease the Topps brands in the future and keep the flagships, chrome, etc.

I wasn’t happy when Topps lost the license for the NFL, but I got over it and so did the market.

They should be careful... Being too big and bloated can open up opportunities for other companies or items... It's too drastic of a change in the industry IMO. They better be in for the long run.

That's the opposite of what I'm saying. The key year is when the MLBPA license ends. Assuming Panini's ends the same year, they are both done that year. The MLB license running longer means nothing, unless Topps wants to put out some Super Break type jersey dumps where it's a picture of a Jersey and a swatch

A friend of a friend who knows (because Topps is soon to become public) said that they were not profitable till the pandemic boom hit.
If true Fanatics will need to sell for more than 10x what Topps sold product for.

To create and produce new cards....but they do have a 70 year history of already produced cards......may as well go out in a blaze of glory and do some crazy buyback autographed sets...and special retired player sets...I'm sure they can be innovative enough for the final two years of the MLB deal. They can toy with the Bowman sets as well.

So they are leaving hockey alone?

The only sport that never cared about Topps/Panini.

But all this is terrible overall for the hobby.
