Would that even be legal? I mean, could the NCAA make a player sign a NIL agreement with only Panini?
No clue, but I'd see them trying. Suppose I should say it would only be a ban on signing for Topps/Panini/other card companies, not autograph deals in general.

There are other examples out there in other sports where players can't take sponsorship deals that would conflict with official league partnerships. I could see the Fanatics thing be that type of arrangement.
How does Panini fold sooner? Topps MLBPA agreement ends in 2023. It doesn't matter that the MLB goes 2 years longer, if you can't use the players' names and faces, you aren't making a successful product
So you are saying Topps would put out cards in 2023, and say Chicago white sox first baseman, and have a blank face because they can't use that name?

Well if that is the case then its close to being dead, i though they had till 2025.

That sounds worse.
Topps paid MLBPA $20 million in 2020. Easy math on what Fanatics offered
Someone posted earlier that Fanatics is worth roughly $13 billion.....if they offered $200 million for the MLBPA annual license, that is a LOT of $$$ considering that they have no intellectual property to back up the license. And who knows what they are playing MLB for the MLB license?

whitmm 08-19-2021 06:37 PM
Also, if I were the MLBPA, I'd put in some clause that forbids new players from signing auto deals with anyone else other than Fanatics (and would shower the players with Fanatics money to make up for it).
You mean if you were Fanatics, you'd put that clause in? The MLBPA got paid, they don't care what the players do. The MLBPA, and all player's associations, are run by a bunch of lawyers. Listen to some of the retired guys talk about this, the PA heads don't always act in the best interest of the players. Kind of like why the MLBPA doesn't care about the minors, and don't vote to add them in. But Tony Clark is going to enjoy a nice big bonus from this

So Fanatics now being reported to have the rights to MLB NBA and NFL? Fanatics evil laugh as they have conqured the sports card world.

$18 billion is the valuation from this past week.

Before you proceed further, consider reevaluating your approach.
What approach is that? Having an open mind? Being excited about a new product? Disagreeing with the older generation that bought a house for $7,000 at the age of 9? The world is changing and this is one of the better pieces of news for this particular hobby. It’s a game changer, it’s unpredictable, that should be reason enough to not write it off 3 years ahead of time
I can picture the Fanatics Autograph Pavilion at the National.

Step right up for your $850 Cal Ripken and your #12 Overall MLB Pick for $950.
Yup. I thought Steiner was ridiculous on prices for Yankees players. Than Fanatics bought them out and made Brandon Steiner look like a cheapskate on prices.

I think the actual size of the deal remains unknown. Saying it is 10x bigger than any deal previously struck may not be apples to apples. Maybe this deal is for a longer time period and that's part of the reason it is 10x bigger.
There hasn't been a license change this big since 1952.
I agree this is the biggest change. We have seen changes every decade though since the 80’s. We still don’t know if Fanatics will buy or lease the Topps brands in the future and keep the flagships, chrome, etc.

I wasn’t happy when Topps lost the license for the NFL, but I got over it and so did the market.

kidbrando 08-19-2021 06:40 PM

They should be careful... Being too big and bloated can open up opportunities for other companies or items... It's too drastic of a change in the industry IMO. They better be in for the long run.

That's the opposite of what I'm saying. The key year is when the MLBPA license ends. Assuming Panini's ends the same year, they are both done that year. The MLB license running longer means nothing, unless Topps wants to put out some Super Break type jersey dumps where it's a picture of a Jersey and a swatch

I have no idea what's going to happen, but I'll be doing this for personal nostalgic reasons. If the NBA news is also true, then I'm absolutely stashing basketball Prizm.

Next
I'm assuming you have never been to one. It will be a bloodbath of angry collectors. I don't see anyone kissing their butt like we did this year. TBP.

kiwicardtrader 08-19-2021 06:43 PM

So what's the ramification of an individual player deal?

https://boardroom.tv/mike-trout-lifetime-topps-deal/

Mike Trout absent from any Fanatics release?

whitmm 08-19-2021 06:43 PM

Unless Fanatics has some secret factory ready to produce cards, they'll just let Topps, Panini, and UD get in a bidding war to become the official manufacturer of their cards.

Actually that is what I am confirming with you.

Wow 2023, that is like tomorrow. Sadness.

Minelayer 08-19-2021 06:44 PM

A friend of a friend who knows (because Topps is soon to become public) said that they were not profitable till the pandemic boom hit.
If true Fanatics will need to sell for more than 10x what Topps sold product for.

Probably includes a clause for Topps no longer making trading cards.

They can just go to the printers each uses and make them a contractual offer instead.

And Topps might be desperate enough to do that. But I'd guess they'd choose to just close up shop

To create and produce new cards....but they do have a 70 year history of already produced cards......may as well go out in a blaze of glory and do some crazy buyback autographed sets...and special retired player sets...I'm sure they can be innovative enough for the final two years of the MLB deal. They can toy with the Bowman sets as well.

k13 08-19-2021 06:46 PM

So they are leaving hockey alone?

The only sport that never cared about Topps/Panini.

But all this is terrible overall for the hobby.
