The issue on Fangraphs seems to be that they don’t provide any offensive WAR when he pitches (those at bats are just not included). So adding them together is a bit low. I’m sure there is some view I haven’t found to correct that, but I haven’t found it.

He leads in 2 categories as a hitter.
0 categories as a pitcher.

He’s a typical power hitter like Gallo or Nelson Cruz, HR and RBI but horrible BA.

His pitching is solid I will give you that, but he won’t even be a top 5 finalist for CY.

I get the whole “never been done” argument, and it’s valid. But what Vlad Jr is doing at his age is unprecedented too. Seems like he’s being punished for not being a pitcher. If it’s was straight up offensive he wouldn’t get any top 3 votes. If his pitching is what’s putting him overnight top, then why no mention of his CY possibly?

If Ohtani wins, I don’t care. I just think Vlad has been more valuable to his team than anyone else this season. Just my opinion.

Just catching up. This thread is spiraling again.

Bbases and his minor league park fixation which clings to correlation and ignores causality, people saying Ohtani is a mediocre hitter to downplay the insanity of what he has done as a never before seen two way talent. This thread makes me want to grab a beer after I’m done reading it.

It’s interesting though how everyone is so fixated on THIS season as if it will be the final determinant in establishing the legacy of each player. While this season is more important for 27 year old Ohtani than 22 year old Vlad, there will still be much greater sample sizes for us to endlessly argue over in the future. I hope, for Ohtani’s sake he finishes this year strong and leaves no doubt/ammo for his critics. I hope Vlad just keeps his approach resulting in an elite combination of power and consistency. Simple as that.

If you are a Vlad buyer, you should be looking more at career projection, not on if he wins an MVP this year. If you’re an Ohtani buyer, you can take comfort in the fact that he’s all but assured to win the MVP. You are probably extremely encouraged by his strong performances on the hill while simultaneously being concerned by his late season tailspin/K fest at the plate just like the Vlad buyers were concerned by his worm burner/GIDP fest.

Let’s temper the drama and hyperbole, appreciate two very different world class talents and attempt to talk baseball with some civility for a bit.

Again with the Joey Gallo? The guy's a .206 career hitter! Ohtani's got more home runs this year than Gallo's ever had in a season. More total bases than Gallo's ever had.

While this is true, it all depends on who you're comparing it to. For example, he's only averaging 1 less out per start than Scherzer. 5.6 vs. 5.92
