Stanton just completed his age 34 season
His current contract runs through the 2027 season
He has a Club Option for the 2028 season
He is an UFA for 2029 (He would likely retire)

2025-Age 35

He needs 71 Home Runs over 3 seasons (End of current contract)

He just needs to average 24 Home Runs per season for the next 3.

Definitely doable

It’s ridiculous that we can zoom in on one HOF stat and determine a guys HOF worthiness while so many other players who contributed all across the game aren’t in.

The HOF is a joke now anyways, so I’m sure Stanton would get in with 500 HR, not because he IS a HOF player, but rather it’s a code or rule that you can be mediocre on all other levels but as long as you do one thing well, you’re in.

Fred McGriff and Carlos Delgado should be in over Stanton. Better overall hitters for sure.

I understand the heart of what you’re saying, but also… hitting 500 HRs is hard! Stanton would be only the 29th player in MLB history to get to that mark, if he actually makes it there.

As mentioned above, Stanton goes in with 500 and no failed tests. It is odd to me that it's really just a round number thing though.

I know historically that as long as you aren't problematic in one of two ways, 3000 hits and 500 HRs gets you in. Carlos Delgado was one and done on the HOF ballot and doesn't seem to be getting traction with the committee, but only 33 players in history have hit more home runs than him.

I don't have a problem at all with Stanton going in with 500+, but baseball is very very obsessed with numbers than end in 00 and 000.

He may not win another regular season MVP, but he doesn’t go MIA like so many other great players. His post season resume is exceptional. If he wins the WS MVP, a very nice caveat. Next season the team will have a great shot at the playoffs and he can climb up the playoff charts statistics as well.

There are 270+ players in the HOF - Stanton is 51st currently in all time homeruns & 113th with OPS+ of 136 - He's a massive muscled giant who hit dingers! He's been awesome in the postseason and its a great story of a guy who just couldn't stay healthy.

I wasn't around for the bulk of Jim Rice's career so I don't know how he was perceived *throughout* his career. Was he seen, even towards the end of his career, as a "feared" hitter? Or did he earn that moniker early on and it kinda stuck?

I ask because I don't know if - the theatrics of the last week notwithstanding - Giancarlo Stanton falls into the same category of being "feared". I think of him as an aged injury-prone hitter who, when healthy, has a ton of power and can hurt you if he gets into one, but otherwise brings average- or below average- production to the plate (and certainly on the basepaths).

(Not for nothing, I do remember Gary Sheffield being *feared* as a hitter - even towards the end - and that did little to advance his HOF candidacy. Of course, he had other circumstances that affected his vote total. But he was definitely feared. Maybe not just because of incredible bat speed, but also carried just a general "he hates the pitcher and could legitimately get violent if he wants to" vibe.)

I dunno. I'd love to see him (Stanton) get into the Hall of Fame. He has three more years on his contract and is 71 homers away from 500, which could be a tall order. I'd say it's 50/50.

Agreed.

Over the last three seasons, he’s been just as injury prone as ever, and still hit 82 HRs over that span. Asking for 71 more over the next 4-5 season isn’t much from him.
