Steph Curry's Legacy

So 5 finals and 0 FMVPs.
Many chances to step up in the finals, but didn't... does last night sum up the stain of Steph Curry's legacy?

Missing game winner and missing many key shots for many years in the finals.

minnesotachill 06-14-2019 10:37 AM

He's a 1-time Finals MVP in my mind.

dasiegel 06-14-2019 10:39 AM

I don't see it how you do at all. I see a guy who averages 20+ ppg while a team played a box and 1 and took a better team to 6 games completely undermanned. They beat Houston without KD. Hell of a run and he had some monster games this series. I see Klay as equally impressive.

The stain of Stephen Curry's legacy? What the hell is wrong with people nowadays...

When it's all said in done he'll be considered the best shooter in NBA history, a multiple NBA champion, one of the most popular players in the world and a first ballot hall of famer with a better career than about 99% of people who have ever played this game. I think he'll be just fine.

3 Titles. 2 MVPs. Greatest Pure Shooter of All-Time. He's not Michael Jordan, but he's still pretty amazing.

Curry already accomplished great with warriors, 3 champs in 5 years. 73 wins regular season. He doesn’t have body like lbj, kd or KL does, but he still put down great numbers in this series.

chris_ac 06-14-2019 10:48 AM

Holy cow, now Curry stinks Lol This forum is hypercritical. Stop sticking everyone in a Jordan box or whatever comp is being dished. Sorry but this is why league talk is just silly. The overanalysis based on titles and accolades vs the ones who don’t have everything is oof. How do you enjoy basketball when the constraints of respectability tighten so much.

From the hobby view, I know Curry’s cards are high, but no reason to find holes in him to dismiss his collectors imho.

His legacy has always been the best shooter of all time, he doesn't need to be clutch like Jerry West or Larry Bird. I don't see what they stain is, being a top 20 player all time instead of a top 10? He will always be an all time great, coming from a player who wasn't recruited by any major schools and was passed over by 5 teams for lesser players, I would say that is a pretty good legacy to have.

To me this is a bit exaggerated.

Curry didn't beat Houston without KD. They played one game and one quarter without KD, not the entire series. That warriors team is without KD is still good enough to beat any team in the NBA for one game which is what they did. Curry had a crazy second half in that game to end the series. It was a great game by him, but he had a poor series overall. No way the Warriors beat Houston if KD was out from the beginning of the series. KD was averaging like 35ppg before he left towards the end of the 3rd in game 5.

The Raptors played box and 1 for maybe 18-20 minutes total in the series, in game 2 and game 6 4th quarters. The fact that it kept working after game 2 is more of an issue with Kerr and his coaching staff to not counter it. To say Toronto was the better team is a bit of a reach as most people were expecting the Warriors to win the series before game 1 tipped off. Curry wasn't completely undermanned either. KD was not there but the rest of the team was until game 3. This same team just swept the Blazers in the WCF too. Game 3 yes Curry was leading an undermanned Warriors team and came up short, but the series overall I did not think the Warriors were undermanned. Even game 3 sitting Klay was a team decision and he said he wanted to play. But I would say talent wise the Raptors and Warriors were about even in this series once KD was not playing.

IronMonkey415 06-14-2019 11:58 AM

Peyton Manning all over again.

dgbarnes 06-14-2019 12:13 PM

He repeatedly made the right play (typically a pass) last night, unfortunately they didn't have the firepower on the wings to knock down shots like the usually do.

The Raptors double teamed, triple teamed, blitzed, everything imaginable to get it out of his hands so I'm not sure what people expected against the best defense in the league with no Klay or KD...

Also, the Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard only had 1 more point than Curry last night, so are we going to be critical of Kawhi as well? No were not, because his was the better team that won the game.

Scottish Punk 06-14-2019 12:15 PM
Peyton Manning all over again.
That is funny, I was just thinking about Manning as I was reading this thread as well.

Before Super Bowl - Great regular season player, goes deep in playoffs and chokes. Never will be considered an all time great.

.. Plays very average to poor in a Super Bowl run and gets a ring.

After Super Bowl - Great player, gets his team into deep playoff runs every year, what a winner and all time great!!

Narratives are funny thing and can change instantly.

the mesiah 06-14-2019 12:16 PM

I see where u going OP, I don’t have him in a whole different stratosphere like a lot of people on here or the media darling that they portray him to be in general. Interesting stat I saw is that Curry is now 0-8 on go-ahead shots with less than 0:20 in NBA Playoff career. When someone is the claimed “greatest shooter” ever , I would like to say I want it to include the Finals as well if they were fortunate to played in them. , Ray Allen has missed many shots but he made that one that people will remember forever , Reggie never was in the Finals and missed lot of shots but he had his New York playoff run and lots will remember the made shots.
Him being a PG ,I just don’t have the feel that he will control a game, the series , etc ..once those circus 3 pointers don’t fall then what I want to see is make difference on the defensive side or playmaking side to overcome the adversity and he has not when it was needed especially in this series .When I saw him play in Davidson i saw a great shooter but not one that I could imagine be a MVP of the league 2 times , I think he has overachieved for his career so far . Kerr’s system is what made it work for Steph , to me he is just a one dimensional player that doesn’t have the intangibles to carry a team overall on both sides of the ball and will them to a Finals victory like a lot of previous real great players have done and that’s ok , I didn’t expect him to .When Durant was out I figured it was going to be Klay be that one to fill in that role to carry the team not Steph because of what I saw in the past Finals years.

Steph’s Legacy?

3x Champ, 2x MVP, best pure shooter maybe ever, changed the way the game was played. That’s just the Cliff’s Notes version.

That’s if he walks away today. His legacy is not in jeopardy.

This just solidifies that he’s never going to be one of those top10 or Mount Rushmore NBA players. All time great player? Definitely. Greatest shooter ever? Probably right now but who knows with the way the game is going. Put prime Ray Allen on the Warriors and I bet he’d be setting every single 3pt record too so it’s really hard to compare Curry against anyone else because this type of basketball has never been played.

Not a chance he’s ever a top10 all-time guy, tho

No stain at all on his legacy. This year in the finals Curry averages 30.5 points to go with 5 rebounds and 6 assists a game, better averages than most players that win a Finals MVP. Last year he didn't win and his averages were 27.5, 6.0, 6.8. Year before that he averaged 26.8, 8.0, 9.4. He honestly might have strengthened his legacy with what he did against Portland and his Game 3 performance with 47 points to go with 8 and 7

tjforce 06-14-2019 02:31 PM

Curry's legacy at this point is easy:

Greatest 3 point shooter ever. 2 time MVP. 3 Time Champion. Sure first ballot HOF'er.

Not on the level of other recent greats like Jordan, LeBron, Kobe, Shaq, Duncan, etc.

His inability to take over in the biggest of situations keeps him at least 1 level below each of those mentioned above.

Archangel1775 06-14-2019 02:40 PM

But never the most valuable.

Also, if you want to argue who's 'heart and soul of the team', which is totally subjective and cannot be proven one way or the other, you could just as easily argue Klay Thompson, who they can't win without, time and time again.

Curry isn’t the heart of current warriors team? As you see from finals, raptors didn't guard thompson as hard as they guard curry, and curry still get 30 ppg in this series. Both of them are important to Warriors. But if u want me to choose one to be the best player in this team, I will go curry.

Though I'm a KD man myself, it ain't close to over for Steph. Legacy talk is for old folk like soon-to-be 35 LBJ. Because you know you can't add much more at that point, only detract, esp. if he keeps being a locker room cancer + playing sh*t for D.

Steph is turning 31.

And Dubs bringing back the big guns... (see latest in Windhorst thread). You can do a lot with Steph's talent minus the double and triple teams. Stay tuned.

Not try to be disrespectful to kd, but if situation changed, kd were the one who is healthy, and curry is the one out. I doubt the ability of the kd to carry this team to finals without carry. Warriors would be eliminated when they face rockets.

(1) It’s a subjective accolade.
(2) Some would argue that Curry should’ve been finals MVP over Iguodala in the 2014-15 Finals.

I do agree with you on the Klay point. Both are incredibly valuable to the team.. Klay is a significantly better defender and Curry is a significantly better passer/ball handler. They complement each other well and both are needed for Dubs to be successful IMO. Personally, I value them equally despite Curry getting more mainstream recognition.

Bowman23 06-14-2019 03:36 PM

Psshhh.. That’s it?
(1) It’s a subjective accolade.
(2) Some would argue that Curry should’ve been finals MVP over Iguodala in the 2014-15 Finals.

I do agree with you on the Klay point. Both are incredibly valuable to the team.. Klay is a significantly better defender and Curry is a significantly better passer/ball handler. They complement each other well and both are needed for Dubs to be successful IMO. Personally, I value them equally despite Curry getting more mainstream recognition.
Thompson is great shooter, but he won’t be the leader in this team. And to those ppl who doubt about Curry, just imagine how terrible this playoff would be without Curry for all warriors fans.

drobfan8 06-14-2019 05:50 PM

He's heading the way of Tim Duncan and Bill Russell.

Underappreciated.

The Finals MVPs are a joke, that says more about the plebs voting than it does about Steph.

Dude built a team from ground up and literally took over. Great leader, would have loved to have seen him hit that shot in game 6 to force game 7, but I think Toronto would have won by 20.

He's top 10 ish at the moment with room to move.

He scored 30.5 ppg in this series, and 36.5 against Portland in western conference finals. And there is ppl still talk #@#@#@#@ about him.
So 5 finals and 0 FMVPs.
Many chances to step up in the finals, but didn't... does last night sum up the stain of Steph Curry's legacy?

Missing game winner and missing many key shots for many years in the finals.
Replies below sum things up well.

All I will add is that there is a saying "Just because you blow someone elses candle out does not mean yours shines brighter". Why are we nitpicking a first ballot HOFer who is going to go down as the best pure shooter in the history of the game?
The stain of Stephen Curry's legacy? What the hell is wrong with people nowadays...

When it's all said in done he'll be considered the best shooter in NBA history, a multiple NBA champion, one of the most popular players in the world and a first ballot hall of famer with a better career than about 99% of people who have ever played this game. I think he'll be just fine.

Still the greatest shooter of all time.

I like this statement. So true. The NBA is full of amazingly talented players that get torched on here. There isn’t a single star player I have much bad to say about. If anything, I’m mostly only critical of my own team’s players.
