2019-20 Panini Chronicles Basketball- Pre-release Thread

I didn't know what to name this so I went with "pre-release thread" instead of "hype thread" because I don't want to make this that. But I'm more than ready for this stuff. I've been a fan since the initial release of the product back in 2017-18 season and I can't wait to see what Panini has in store for us this time around.

Last season this was by far my favorite product. I'd go as far as saying it was the NBA product of the summer, maybe the best summer time NBA release in years. Just my opinion.

It was so much fun when this stuff came out last summer, I noticed a lot more trading going on and even made a few fun trades myself. It was great for the hobby.

I'm very curious about the "prizm update" and "optic update" subsets. With optic, most of the rookies already have a Rated Rookie card in the standalone Optic release. So, will this be a vet based subset (traded players, players who didn't have a card in Optic like Melo, Christian Wood, etc, etc) or just different images of the rookies who already have Optic cards? Time will tell but I'm hoping it's the former..

Anyways.. Enough rambling by me. Who else is ready for this stuff? :)

oldgoldy97 03-07-2020 07:34 AM

Maybe Nunn will have earned the right to have his name on an updated Optic card.

KhalDrogo 03-07-2020 08:58 AM

Where is there any info on it?

oldgoldy97 03-07-2020 08:59 AM

Preselling someplace.

KhalDrogo 03-07-2020 09:06 AM

Set sounds confusing as hell this year. Are they just going to make a second Zion Optic and Prizm RC?

PKIPP 03-07-2020 09:12 AM
Set sounds confusing as hell this year. Are they just going to make a second Zion Optic and Prizm RC?
Really hope not. It would be way cooler if they use those subsets for vets and rookies who didn't have cards in the standalone releases, and traded players. Would be great for team collectors seeing as how each team only has 5 non rookie cards in optic

blackbears86 03-07-2020 09:22 AM

Is there any information on this? Googled and found nothing.
Set sounds confusing as hell this year. Are they just going to make a second Zion Optic and Prizm RC?
I'm guessing this will be the case.

And I'm sure short-term, those variation Optic and variation of the variation Prizm cards will sell.

I loved Chronicles last year. Bought way too much of it. Actually bought some more of it this week and it's being delivered today.

I'm excited about the Optic and Prizm cards in it this year, but it's just a straight money grab. The idea of Chronicles last year for Baseball and Basketball was to include any product that wasn't released for that sport. Really awesome idea. Now it seems like it's just a way to do a version 2 of whatever products sold really well.

I'll still be buying for sure though.

Who knows - maybe the Optic and Prizm RC will be a sweet new design and be great?

I preordered what I could : stuff is selling out fast especially hanger boxes

glassofwater 03-07-2020 10:46 AM

Panini finally getting on that update bandwagon. Can’t wait I got into chronicles late. Cards were nice. Can’t wait.

Are they having hanger boxes again this year? I got in for 11 fat pack boxes last night. Couldn’t resist especially with the Zion/Ja craze. Looks like fat packs will have the bronze exclusives and blasters will have the pink.

$20 on blasters and $60 on fat pack boxes should be MSRP. Order price from my retail distributor was $13 on blasters and $40 on fat pack boxes.

If 2018/19 Fat Pack boxes are selling for $225-$250, I can only imagine what this years will sell for. Getting so many Zion and Ja in a single box is going to cost a fortune. I'm leaving hobby alone because those prices will be sky high like everything else this year.

A lot of those base RCs won’t be worth much. Look at prices for Luka’s good stuff (Prizm/Optic) vs his Chronicles base and base parallels (green, pink, etc.). Most of the latter can easily be had in the $3-$5 range. Having said that, I’m sure there will be third party retailers selling this stuff way higher than it’s worth. 18/19 fat pack boxes at $225-250 is insanity. You might pull 1 or 2 #’d cards in an entire box, the rest will be base and a few base parallels.

Here’s hoping I can actually find some of this in stores unlike Prizm and Optic. Maybe with the season over by the time this is released, some of the hype will die down and the vultures won’t be buying full trays on sight. I pre-ordered half a blaster case just to be sure I’ll be able to open something, because this was the most fun retail product to open last year.

phil 03-08-2020 10:27 PM

They probably didn't make very many Fat Pack cases in 2018 because demand would have been super low for retail NBA stuff at the time retail distributors had to order Chronicles.

I thought the same thing about Luka's chronicles cards before doing a search last night... Some of the cards are actually selling in the $25-30 range especially the chrome and holofoils... I was pleasantly surprised to see the Panini branded ones selling for $10.

baseballbunez 03-09-2020 10:24 AM

Optic + Prizm update inclusions should make this set a winner this year, even if production jumped. Both of my retail distributors had to shut down orders and cut people they sold out of their allocations so fast, but obviously no idea how accurate or how much is going to the big box stores vs the smaller retail distributors.

Definitely a set to look forward to though, and hopefully the hobby solicitation can shed a bit more light on the new additions for the year.

Wow, they must be jumping up along with everything else! I had a Luka Chronicles Playoff Green parallel that I had listed for weeks at $4.75 and nobody was buying it. The better looking cards (Chronicles base holofoil, Crusade, Phoenix, etc.) definitely go for more but those are harder to hit. You might get one of those in each fat pack and 2-3 per blaster.

I just pre-ordered 2 fat pack boxes as well today, so I think I'm good just incase I can't find any in stores. I'd like to find some hanger boxes as well. I hope this isn't retail-only and they do a hobby box as well, because those were a ton of fun to rip last year too with two autos per box and a ton of low #'d rookie cards.

I won't miss Cornerstones as a stand-alone product, but I really hope they have the quad patch Cornerstone RPAs in hobby boxes of Chronicles, because I always thought those were some of the best and most undervalued RPAs that Panini puts out.

Preordeing is definitely the move. If hoops and base donruss consistently sells out then Chronicles is a no brainer.
