Rob Manfred in hot water
https://twitter.com/nickcocco18/status/1299097093685104648?s=21
Video above describes the Mets personnel discussing the plan Manfred wanted to happen tonight. The Mets and Marlins wanted to not play to take a stand. Manfred wanted them to take the field, then walk off at 7:10, then return at 8:10 to play. Brodie says “he just doesn’t get it”. Manfred could be in a lot of trouble for this, attempting to use the players and go against the players wants for his own plan |
Maybe Manfred will get the boot.
I'm being optimistic. |
Keith Olbermann just tweeted this:
Unless this is somehow fabricated or the greatest misinterpretation in the history of the sport, Commissioner of Baseball, Rob Manfred, has to resign. Tonight. This is indefensible, cheap, sordid, racist. The video that caught all of this is unreal which ironically was caught by the MLB cameras and was live streamed. Manfred is a(n) idiot. I know plenty of guys in the bigs from All Stars to bench players and they have said the whole league does not like Manfred and this is before he screwed up things w his response to Covid. |
He is the worst commissioner in the 4 major sports and now he has this idea?!?

Damn, my prediction was off by a day.

They're all bad, because they all work for the owners.....people keep on thinking that they're supposed to be "neutral" guardians of the game, but they're not. Adam Silver (NBA) is probably the least "bad", because NBA owners are actually reasonably enlightened, especially when compared to MLB & NFL owners. |
Will a new commissioner bring younger people to baseball which would hopefully trickle down to the hobby?

Not as long as the commissioner works solely for the owners.... |
how the heck is that racist?
When I saw that tweet I thought it was an extremely strong statement. I get that people and players do not like Manfred but I was shocked it was said by Olbermann. I am a mixed minority and my views on Manfreds statement doesnt sit well with me because the players made a unilateral decision to sit out to make a statement that enough is enough. If the players are not wanting to play to draw attention for the cause of social injustice Mandfred might want to listen to the players... David Price let it rip earlier as well towards some fellow MLB players.. JR Smith of the Lakers prob said it best imo....oh you dont hear us...well now you cant see us!!! |
It was a silly idea but racist? I dunno.
The whole league should take a day off (even though they can't really afford to) and then come back. That would be a stronger statement than some teams doing it one day and them some another. It is a mess. |
I know there are pitchers that are pissed their routines are messed up. Players that want to, you know.. play. But who's going to speak up?
|

Most of the hobby doesn’t want younger people because the don’t want kids in their business. |

This is a conversation about the Mets/Manfred/this whole situation. If you’re going to talk about that situation, please go to off topic/the politics thread. I’d prefer if this thread was just about Manfred and this whole situation and it doesn’t turn into a screaming match between 2 sides and it gets locked |
I was thinking MLB might ask the players to coordinate a more League wide response tomorrow, 8-28, which has become Jackie Robinson day with the uniform # tribute for this year. But the team-by-team decisions probably came together too organically for that.

So who believes this was all just a big oopsie? :coffee:

That’s the danger with the fake news media these days. Facts don’t matter as long as it fits your agenda. Apparently some folks had their agenda fit with this one. |
The standard MLB player contract allows teams to terminate the contract if the player shall "fail, refuse, or neglect to render his services". I wonder if this opens up the door for teams to terminate bad contracts for players who refused to play. If it was across the league they could say they didn't really have a choice but with some games happening and none of the Mets or Marlins players making any attempt to stay on the field, it seems like refusal to play and a breach of contract.
I doubt it will happen because it will be a PR nightmare, but it's another thing that could complicate the next CBA. One of the main benefits of employers agreeing to a union contract is that the employees aren't supposed to refuse to work while under contract and a good portion of the league is refusing to play. |

What’s fake news? That this was Manfred’s idea? The video is pretty crucial and is a big piece of evidence. Of course an owner is going to defend the commissioner |

Either Wilpon or Manfred, or possibly both, sees it differently. If it's Manfred and he is still in charge when the CBA is up, that's a big deal. I'm guessing a lot of people in baseball who support or are okay with the players not playing would have preferred the players to come to the MLB and try to work out a plan to postpone games together rather than telling the MLB they wouldn't play. About 200-250 black people are shot and killed by police each year, plus more who are shot and not killed or killed by something other than a gun so if making statements by refusing to play without working with the MLB is the new normal, this is probably going to happen at least a few times per season going forward. Bringing it up now publicly isn't the right time or place but I'm sure there are quite a few people high up in teams or the MLB who like the statement but aren't happy with the way it was made. |

At the least it's incrediblity tone deaf as is clear in Van Wagenen's comments when he assumed the idea came from Manfred. I agree and I'm sure some along the food chain are unhappy with the way the protests have played out. I wouldn't expect universal agreement on anything. The vast majority of sentiment within and around the game, however, is behind the players - which is good going forward as the first step any protest wants is acknowledgement of grievance. Baseball can't change social problems (the ultimate end behind most protests) but they can support players and acknowledge the grievance which it is doing. |
Manfred might be a terrible commissioner, but even hes smart enough not step in that bad. But is anyone honestly this surprised it has Wilpon all over it? They dont care who they piss off since they have one foot out the door with no real power left.

People are injecting there own political views in the whole racism aspect of this. The facts of what is being reported is the Mets GM was informed of an idea that instead of canceling the game against the Marlins the teams leave the field wait an hour and come back out. He mistakenly thought the idea came from Manfred so was caught on camera saying "He doesn't get it" He later found out the idea came from Wilpon and issued a retraction and an apology to Manfred. That is what happened the rest is speculation, conspiracy theories, political agendas, etc. |

The players wanted to cancel the game. Manfred (or whoever you think it was) told them to play but delay for a hour. Going against the players wishes and trying to force them into something they don’t want to do is wrong to do. When you’re trying to make a point about societal issues, you shouldn’t go against the wishes of the people actually making said stand. |
