PITCHERS: Official Thread of the Hobby’s Outcast Position
 

It’s no secret that pitchers receive little love in the hobby. That’s despite the top free-agent hurlers getting paid like Fortune 500 CEOs.

Collecting pitchers is a thing, though, even if it’s more niche than, say, collecting Trout or Jeter. And threads do exist here in the Forum for individual pitchers. But let’s face it: if surefire Hall-of-Famers Scherzer, Kershaw and Verlander can’t carry a lively thread, how can we expect an up-and-comer with a few hundred strikeouts (Sandy Alcantara) to do so?

We can’t. But if we grouped them altogether, kinda like a pitching staff (BO style), then maybe—just maybe—we can have an ongoing dialogue about the stars of the mound and the great cards we’re collecting of them (or begrudgingly pulling from packs.)

Here are some highlights of my recent pickups. Now let’s see what you got! (And maybe later we can debate whether Scherzer’s 2008 Stadium Club auto is the most overlooked card of any active player.)

Snagged this one recently for a little over $8 dollars. I briefly held a sealed jumbo box of '08 Update but decided not to rip when Khal reported condition issues (packs shift a lot), so I sold it and now I bought the card I likely wouldn't have hit had I opened the box.

Outstanding topic! I've been partial to pitchers for as long as I can remember. Hugely undervalued and under appreciated! Every action sequence starts with the pitcher. When he's on, the entire game focuses on him. When he's off, the mound is the loneliness place in the entire park.

Love all the cards shown! Top quality...especially the Chrome Scherzer 9.5 for $8? Did I read that right? If so, yowza.

For active young guys, I like Josiah Gray. I know he's in purgatory with Washington and had an expectedly rough year, but he only turns 25 next week and has a lot of talent. Pitchers mature later anyway. I believe he'll blossom sooner than later.

Otherwise, a massive Kershaw fan, even though I only have a handful of his cards.

But, the centrepiece to my small collection is a Topps era run of HOF pitchers. All 40 representing a different Topps design with no duplicates and no rookies.

Look forward to seeing more!

It’s a common refrain to point out that a successful hitter fails seven out of 10 times at the plate. By the same token, a pitcher who only succeeds seven out of 10 times is failing. The threshold for success is high, and yet we hobbyists don’t give proper due to those who surpass exceed it.

A single thread certainly can’t change hobby attitudes toward pitchers, but I figure it can’t hurt to bring more focus to the only players who touch the ball on every play. (Not even catchers can claim that.)

As for your cards… I despise the Dodgers. But that triple auto is, uh, not a bad piece of cardboard. Someday you’ll need a quad auto that includes Urias.

That’s an orange speckle refractor of the Topps Chrome Extended SP.

I don’t know too much of the story, but apparently Topps failed to include them in regular packs, and made up for it by inserting them in Cosmic and Logofractor boxes. And they’re apparently in Hobby Lite boxes, too.

There is no criteria, other than this is a place to discuss pitchers and share cards of them. Mikolas is a pitcher, and those are nice cards of Mikolas. Perfect!

Thanks! Yep I’ve got the 02 upper deck auto as well as both autograph cards from 2003 bowman. They’d all grade in the 6-8 range though due to rough edges.

I got back into collecting pulling a 2005 Bowman Sterling auto relic of Verlander. Can't wait to get it back from grading.

Been thinking recently of getting more into Josiah Gray to have a Nationals guy. Haven't pulled the trigger on any pitchers though. Almost went for the super Sterling of Dustin May, but you talked me out of it because of Tommy Johns at the time.

It didn't take long for this thread to fill up with some nice cards!

Personally, I'm partial to pitchers. I was a pitcher when I played so other than Yordan, most of the players I end up collecting are pitchers. Fernandez, Javier, Manoah, Luzardo, Toussaint...

I'll have to post some photos later.

Good topic- I’ve never really collected many pitchers, but with Kershaw, Verlander and Scherzer headed towards the end of their careers, I’ve been wondering if we’ll look back on 2022 as the year when the next generation of really good starting pitchers broke out.

I definitely gobbled up some more RCs this year of pitchers like Alcantara, Manoah, McClanahan, Burnes, and Cease.

This is actually a driving force for creating the thread. There have been some great pitchers come into the league after Kershaw, Scherzer and Verlander. deGrom chief among them.

But it’s been a while since a crop with this much talent has come along. Manoah, Hunter Greene, and Cristian Javier are high on my list. I like Luzardo a lot, but it’ll be hard for him to stand out in Miami with all the other talent in that rotation. Julio Urias has been around for a while now, but he’s emerging big time—and he’s still young.

And there are lot more great young arms out there.

Pitcher fan myself (preferred pitching growing up vs hitting once I realized what I was better at) and collect some greats and young guns.

The biggest issue people always say they get no love isn't the whole play every 5 days is that pitchers now-a-days are the same as the greats. There stuff on average is more electric, faster, etc. however there is rarely a 20-game winner and guys used to finish games when they started. It is just a different mindset now compared to position players. They really haven't changed in terms of how they play except maybe they try to hit HR vs base hits.

Thanks! Yeah Baz and Mize are really cheap so I think it's worth a gamble. With those 2, I was a big fan of them on their come ups, so I've just kind of stuck with them. And Nate Pearson ahahahah I wasted a ton of money on him omg, I don't even want to talk about him.

Hoping Baz does well, I keep getting random low parallels of him. Hit a Yellow /50 in my 2021 Bowman Sapphire box last year and recently hit this Orange Speckle variation in a Chrome mega box at 1:28396 odds :eek:

Honestly with all the craziness, I forgot he had 2022 rookies until about a week ago! I grabbed an TC orange auto #/25 for $50 a couple of days ago which I think is super cheap.

And I imagine with the massive flood going on, there will be a ton of deals in the coming weeks/months.

If that was the downward facing bad pic orange I offered $40 and was countered at $50 but didnt see it until someone else(you?) swooped

It's crummy over here too... a young guy ran a yield sign and crashed into me as I was on my way to pick up my son a few weeks ago. Wrote off my car and I had to do some fast emergency car shopping and just got a new one yesterday. Now I'm stuck going to physio, out of work and pretty sore and messed up for the holidays. The good news is that I was 2 blocks away from school BEFORE I picked up my son, not after!

Here’s a fun Lodolo for you. I’m kinda annoyed that they did the photo variation without stamping a “1st Bowman” on it. But I love the card otherwise.
