What's up with the blatant shilling recently in Goldin weekly auctions?
Noticed this started a few weeks ago. Every goldin weekly auction there are at least 2-3 random cards on the first page of the auction being bid to like 10x the market price. Some examples from this current auction:
https://goldin.co/item/1997-98-fleer-ultra-star-power-supreme-1sps-michael-jordan-sgc-authente98jh (same exact card "sold" for $1400 in a goldin auction a few weeks ago and also sold on ebay for $1000 a few weeks prior, currently at $7200) https://goldin.co/item/2023-panini-prizm-ufc-superstar-autographs-silver-sa-hsb-hasbulla-magowpvz9 (PSA 9 sold on ebay for $455 last month, this SGC 9 is currently at $6000) https://goldin.co/item/2022-panini-clearly-donruss-night-moves-nm-1-tom-bradysoj11 (PSA 9 sold on ebay for $200 a few weeks ago, this PSA 8 is currently at $2400) At first I thought goldin would step in and remove the obviously fake bids well before the auction ended, but here's an item that went all the way to the end last week: https://goldin.co/item/2022-23-panini-prizm-monopoly-neon-green-19-luka-doncic-01-10hx517 (Raw copies have sold on ebay for around $300, this PSA 10 sold for $6800 lmao) Could probably find even more examples if I looked past the first page. Fake bids being placed even with reputable auction houses is nothing new, but I have never seen such blatantly obvious shill bidding be allowed to occur at PWCC, heritage, or anywhere else. Pretty bad look for goldin. |

I'm all for dunking on goldin but there's no reason they would be behind this or support it in any way lol. This huts them more than anybody since the item obviously won't be paid for so they have to re-list it which is extra work and delays them getting their cut from the sale. Just kind of shocking that they wouldn't recognize these super obviously shills and remove the bids/ban the accounts/IPs of the people doing the shilling.

They aren't stopping it either. So...either they're in on it or they don't care or they're not smart enough to know. ALL = a problem! |
Let's not fool ourselves. It's not just Goldin... it's the whole damn Hobby. PWCC, eBay, Alt, Heritage, Mile High... they all have shilling going on. There will ALWAYS be people who want to drive up the price by bidding with no intention of winning the card.

I gave my dog my phone just to hold and he bid $6,000 please cancel thank you god bless
Business as usual in The Business aka The Hobby. |
Shilling has always been around but it's been more rampant after people started manipulating comps to sell for higher prices at shows. It's comical to see cards get relisted and sell for a fraction of the last "sold" price. It's all about money nowadays so nothing is unthinkable unfortunately.

In regard to this thread.
Our internal methods had determined that certain items, by the same Consignor appeared to have very irregular bid patterns and we had removed those items yesterday and froze the bidders who were suspect. The cards in this thread including the 1 card that ended last week were also consigned by the same Consignor. We have banned the Consignor and the legal team is working on the matter. We have banned the multiple accounts that we believe we’re acting in concert with the Consignor. We have pulled 100% of this Consignors items, and our general counsel is contacting the winner of the card last week to cancel the transaction. We take multiple precautions to avoid a Consignor trying to manipulate the price of his consigned item, which includes strict vetting of new bidders and credit limits. Unfortunately due to the lower value of these cards, it appears to have occurred, however corrective action was taken. We will be circulating this Consignors name to other auction houses so they are not victims of his actions. If you ever have a question about an item, or want to express a concern and get the quickest possible response, email me directly. Dave@goldin.com |
Everything I'm bidding on is getting shilled.
I'm only going to my max. So much Goldin stuff then moving to ebay and back and forth so on and so on |
2019-2020 was great but we are in for much pain moving forward.
NPBers, returners of cards that “won’t gem.” Gee, wish you could cancel that mortgage contract you signed on that fix and flip when you walked in and saw it’s more beat up than you thought |

Shilling is bad everywhere, I think there are a lot of people who do not realize how badly shilled this entire card market really is.

All these auction houses make MORE money because of shilling. Higher bid prices equals higher commission. I would also be willing to bet that there is a bunch of people who post here do that exact thing on their auctions....

Indeed. The hobby is morally bankrupt. There are a lot of people who are poor enough that they would risk their reputation for $100. |

100 percent true. There are so many sets that people now collect whose origin of collectibility stems from shill bidding. Look no further than the original Precious Metal Gems set. Its popularity gained steam decades ago from shill bidding and now Upper Deck has created a version for every other sport and gaming card, not to mention its employee exclusive cards. This hobby has become more of collect what my neighbor collects vs collect what I like because all of the money and subsequent pump and shill schemers that are rampant through the hobby. As long as FOMO exist so will the ability to Pump and Shill any market. |

This is really crazy to see, but have to admit I give kudos for someone that works at Goldin to directly respond back in these forums. It's appreciated at least by me.
I actually was pretty happy with the auctions that ended last night on Goldin, I picked up one item that I was really happy with the price it sold for. |
Now...do we believe that Goldin really banned the guy and then told the other auction houses, etc? Do they ban everyone that shills? Unless names are named publicly, Im not sure I trust Ken Goldin's word. I could, but I don't.
|
Would like to see Goldin follow through on their word to denote paid and unpaid items in the sales history.

Yeah, it's out of control on ebay. Saw a card last week end at $260+ in an auction, looked at the bids and the highest legit non-shill bid for the card was $38. |
Nothing to see here guys, keep it movin'.
|
some people bid like that though. If the "market value" of that card is like $50, then sure it's garbage. But if it's a $300 card that the actual winner bids on with 2 seconds left? who cares.
|
some people bid like that though.
Not with the high percentage of their overall bids with this one seller that has less than 100 total feedback. |

22% might be good for consigners who have to get rid of Apple computers and Beanie Babies and some of the other esoteric items on the Netflix show. But for sports cards under five figures why would anyone go with Goldin? There are many better options. |
Shilling is rampant on "investment" type cards of "hot" players....across all five sports probably 40-50 players in total.
For the other 95% of the hobby it's non-existent. |

That 22% buyer's premium comes soon after they announced sellers only get 95% of hammer price in weekly auctions for cards <$2500. AND they are bringing back 3% charges for using a credit card. So increasing fees on both ends. I don't know how to read that other than they are getting a bunch of cards they don't want in the auctions. I was giving the Goldin weekly's a try, but now it will have to be a special card or price to make it worth it. |
Get people in at one price, then when growth stagnates or declines raise the price on whoever is left. Classic move right from the Netflix playbook.

No. Still no notice of shipping 21 days after payment here. Goldin is the slowest shipper in the business.

They have been getting pretty bad with this. Especially when they pepper you daily to pay (which I actually like the reminders), but then I see two weeks after payment the cards have not shipped. And they won't combine shipping unless it's the same weekly auction. In saying that, I've been winning cards way under what they sold for on ebay. Very happy there. |
It must be items that are in their warehouse or something? Items that are in the PSA Vault seem to ship out normally.
I will say it's very dumb that you win a $30 card at auction and they ship it FedEx Signature Required... |

They are more than likely using a 3rd party insurer for all of their shipments and not using Fedex/UPS insurance. If it's anything like my 3rd party policy, my shipments need to have signature confirmation on them to qualify for any loss/damage payouts. Plus signatures on packages can help with CC fraud if people file chargebacks. |
Customer support says they have recently been experiencing higher-than-normal volume, and their shipments have been a little delayed.

Higher than normal volume...Do they know the market crashed? |
Interesting observation: weekly auction 41 did not open this morning at 8am like they do every Tuesday. Taking a weeklong break to get the warehouse caught up?
My recalled UPS package from last week has not been reshipped yet and no responses to my inquiry to their CS. These are winnings from mid-September that were paid for immediately after auction close. Continuing to take a break from their auctions until things get cleaned up. No bids placed by me during the month of October with all of the issues going on. Also waiting on a return label from CS for a mislabeled Tiffany card I purchased last month. *Editing to add that Ken has reached out to me via BO private messages and is looking to get my intercepted package back out to me asap. Props for reading the forums.* |
Anybody who does business with Goldin is asking for trouble.....it's that simple....

It's unfortunate that a card I've been waiting to surface ends up on Goldin. Will have to ultimately pass on it.

What prevents them from being shilled on Goldin?
|
What prevents them from being shilled on Goldin?
Absolutely nada. Shilling is as prevalent on these auction houses as it is on Fleabay, especially on lower-mid end. It took me nearly a month and a half to rid myself of a Jordan auto. Beyond frustrating. |
I had my first purchase with Goldin recently and it was one of the worst experiences I've ever had.
1. They impose the highest fee in the market with hidden charges. 2. They impose extra charge for late payment, which I'm fine. However, you have to wait for very long time for the shipment. Is it fair? 3. Very poor customer support. Just response in standard phrases, not really engage with your issue. Obviously they put all the focus and resources on making up the auction display for hooking fishes. Other than that, none is a real issue for them. Definitely will not buy things from them again. |
