CheckOutMyCards.com Questions, Suggestions & Testimonials

Hello Blowout Cards community!

Many of you have met me from the other Checkoutmycards.com thread. I am Tim Getsch, founder of CheckOutMyCards.com. I am glad to announce that we have formed a partnership with Blowout Cards.

We are working together to build an ecosystem for card collectors. To kick things off, you can now use store credit earned from selling cards on CheckOutmyCards.com to buy Blowout Cards gift certificates. You can then buy boxes & cases from Blowout Cards, break your boxes, keep the cards you want, and send us the rest to earn more store credit. You can use some of the store credit to buy other singles that you need, to buy more Blowout Cards gift certificates, or to get cash.

As a fellow collector, I am excited about the potential here. I have already used some store credit earned by one of my experimental accounts to buy a $1,000 Blowout Cards gift certificate. Many of the cards I buy from Blowout Cards will go right up for sale on CheckOutMyCards.com.

I would like this tread to be used as a place to post any questions, suggestions, or testimonials about CheckOutMyCards.com. I love to see excitement about new cards listed on CheckOutMyCards, but please do not use this thread to advertise your cards for sale.

Post your CheckOutMyCards listings here:

I look forward to hearing your feedback.

First off, I'd love to say thank you for giving the COMC buyers and sellers who use this forum a place to pose questions and give feedback and suggestions. I'm sure I speak for many of us when I say we're excited about your new partnership with Blowout Cards.

One question I do have is this. Was there consideration given to allowing users to purchase custom amount Blowout Cards gift certificates, instead of the current 3 level approach? I do realize keeping the credit in $50, $250 and $1000 lump sums benefits Blowout Cards, as purchases will always end up being an odd amount and the leftover will be used for future purchases on the site.

I would have loved to have seen a sliding scale approach though, where the user could buy any amount of gift certificate (equal to the total of their future blowout purchase, for example) while taking a small hit on their COMC credit of course. Was this ever discussed as an option?

Thanks again for allowing us this opportunity to give our feedback!

h4auto 08-24-2009 02:06 AM

are you going to update the Shipping special or actual have bulk shipping rates at the end of the month?

otmack2o 08-24-2009 01:29 PM

Tim, what is the expected turnaround time on "cashing out" for a Blowout gift certificate? Will the code be automatically emailed to the user? Thanks!

bigmon80 08-24-2009 03:13 PM

First thanks for doing this and this is a great idea. Love the site Tim and plan on continuing to send in more cards every few months.

My question is if there is going to be a % taken from our COMC money or will all of it go straight to a BO gift certificate if that is what we choose. Which is gonna be the route I will always choose.

Thanks

From this post:

$50 Blowout Gift Certificate = $60 in COMC Funds (16.7% "hit")
$250 Blowout Gift Certificate = $290 in COMC Funds (13.8% "hit")
$1,000 Blowout Gift Certificate = $1,150 in COMC Funds (13.0% "hit")
are you going to update the Shipping special or actual have bulk shipping rates at the end of the month?
This is one of the advantages of communicating directly with the owner and developer. ;)

I just updated the site to make this a permanent special. The last 7 days of each month we will offer bulk shipping.

We simplified the pricing. It is $15 for the first 50 cards and $0.15 for each additional card. Enjoy!

I am really grateful for this forum, and we are also very excited about the long term potential of this partnership.

Yes, it was considered, but I wanted to keep it very clean and simple to start with. We are always open to suggestions, and we may consider adding this. One thing to note is that you can always supplement a purchase on Blowout Cards with additional money. If you want to buy something for $68, you can use a $50 gift certificate and put $18 on your credit card.
I would have loved to have seen a sliding scale approach though, where the user could buy any amount of gift certificate (equal to the total of their future blowout purchase, for example) while taking a small hit on their COMC credit of course. We have discussed many future plans. One of them is being able to order any Blowout Cards product directly from the CheckOutMyCards website. This will take some pretty significant development work and coordination, but it is something we are open to offering.
Thanks again for allowing us this opportunity to give our feedback!
You are welcome. These are great questions.

Tim,

I have a question...

Is there a way to search for a group of cards, and eliminate at least your own cards from the search list? For example, I'd like to search the COMC site to buy Sportkings cards, but when I type in "sportkings", most of the cards are mine. I'd love to be able to leave my cards out of the search in order to be more efficient.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your time,

Matt

We haven't done that much plumbing yet. For now it is the same as a PayPal deposit. I will be manually filling these requests a couple times per week. So, the site says to allow 4 days for delivery, but you can call us if you need it sooner than that.

You are welcome. It looks like CardCache answered the immediate question. Yes, we will still take a %, but it is better than the 20% that we take when converting to cash. One thing to keep in mind, is that this is just the beginning.

Teaser: Keep an eye open for CheckOutMyCards.com exclusive specials that may even take less store credit than Blowout Card standard prices.

This is a great suggestion. I have often found myself wanting to do similar things. Since this will affect search optimization, I will have to think about the implementation carefully, but I will definitely keep this idea in mind.

Thank you. I have stopped searching for Sportkings cards because it takes too much time determining if what's for sale is mine or not. Being able to take my cards out of the mix would leave me searching for new cards every couple days at least.

If you don't mind, please post when you have updated this feature.

Thanks again,

Matt,

In the mean time, you could sort by 'Recently Added' after you've run your original search. Determine which card is YOUR most recently added card at any given time, and then anything appearing ahead of it in your search will be something new to the site.

For example, I just ran a search for "sportkings" and sorted by "Recently Added" and the first card listed is a Bo/Barry/Brown Gold Triple Jersey /10 (your card). If you bookmark that search, any cards listed ahead of that card are ones new to the site. If that card remains the first card listed, then no new cards have been added to the site. Anytime you add more yourself, just figure out which one comes up first.

Cards matching: sportkings - CheckOutMyCards.com

If there are older ones scattered between yours that you want to keep an eye on, you could add them to your cart and just leave them there. As long as you check them on the same computer you added them to your card on, they should still be there each time you log in (until or unless they sell anyway).

Matt, one of the features that I use on COMC is the RSS feed ability. If you use Google Reader or any other similar program it will update you automatically when new cards are added that match your search results. Tim- thank you for enabling that feature!

Just copy and paste this link into an RSS reader and you're good to go: CheckOutMyCards.com - Cards matching: sportkings :D

As far as I know, yes. Although each will be treated as separate batches. So if you send in 100 priority and 400 standard, you'd pay $6 in the batch fees instead of $3. Just make sure you box them up separately and clearly mark which service level each gets.

Tim,

I stumbled on the "Coming Soon" features on your Website. Any feedback of how soon these items will be rolled out? Some real cool ideas!

Coming Soon...

Want Lists
Get notifed when cards on your wantlist are added to the site. Let other users know what you want, so they have incentive to add those cards to the site.

Lots
Users will be able to create "bargain lots", complete sets, or even set a sale price for their entire collection. You will be able to buy these lots, keep the cards you want, turn around, and sell the rest.

eBay Auctions
Want to auction off some cards? You will be able to list individual cards or lots on eBay. The winner of the auction will have the choice of having the cards shipped or having them transferred to their CheckOutMyCards.com account. If the cards are transferred to their account, the user can choose what to do with each card independently. Some may be shipped to the user, some may be listed on CheckOutMyCards.com, and some may even be listed on eBay again.

CheckOutMyCards.com Store
Create a portal to CheckOutMyCards.com that shows only your cards and displays your branding.

Personal Website
Show off your collection. Let people know your favorite players, teams, cards...

Thank you guys for your awesome site! I have picked up many great deals that I never would have found had it not been for your site.

I was wondering if you guys could add a message box on the offer page? As a buyer, I'd feel better to get an idea of what the seller would like on some of their cards. Sometimes I want to make an offer on a lot of cards from a seller, but there may be a couple of cards that the seller wants full value for. As the buyer, I wouldn't really have any way of knowing that (unless they are already members of this forum and I can PM them).

Please let me know if this is a possible addition that can be made. Thank you and great work with your site!

As new cards get added to the site, you will be notified. If they are from a batch of your own cards, you can just ignore them. Otherwise you will get see the new Sportkings cards that get added to the site.

Yes, you just need to make sure it is obvious to us. It is common for people to put multiple boxes inside one flat rate box. On each box people will write their user name and the service level they desire.

Sorry we didn't get back to you on this. We must have missed this. I will look into adding a feature to make this easier.

pskell02 08-24-2009 09:45 PM

Not sure if this question has been raised before, but here goes.

When looking at your own inventory and sorting cards, when you sort by "Only cards WITHOUT prices" you still see the cards that are flagged to ship. Is it possible to add a dropdown, or change the current option, to show just cards with no asking price while ignoring those that are marked to ship?

ragingmensan 08-24-2009 11:29 PM

Hi Tim,

Thank you for continuing to move COMC forward. I am optimistic that this will be the marketplace for collectors in the hopefully not-too-distant future.

There are some ideas I have to help improve the usability of the site. Here are a couple of them:

-I'd like to be able to flag items in my inventory with much more variety than currently available. For instance, I may want to flag cards for my own PC ('not for sale' could work for that), separate cards for my brother, cards that I may want to change the price on soon if they don't get any interest, etc.. Several different colored flags could serve this purpose in any way imaginable.
This could even be taken to the next level with the implementation of automatic flags (perhaps with email notifications). Examples would include cards with:
*recent price increases
*recent price decreases
*no purchase after being for sale for more than X amount of time
*no offers after X amount of time
*asking prices between $.26 and $.5 (this is particularly useful toward the end of the month)

-I think the single most useful improvement that the site can benefit is advanced browsing and filtering capabilities similar to those that Beckett use now. In addition to sport and year, I would like the option to filter by:
*min price and max price
*card types (game used, autographed, serial #'d, etc.--the ability to select multiple options is critical)
*team
*seller name (if practical w/ a drop down list)
I have lost a lot of hours looking for things like cards with a BV of at $5 priced at least 90% off. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who would buy much more actively if they could easily find game used Red Sox cards priced at least 60% off book (but with an asking price no higher than $10). I realize this may be difficult to implement but if it is at all possible this could provide a remarkable transformation.

I hope these ideas help! Keep up the good work!

Cactuspies 08-25-2009 08:49 AM

I know I'm excited about the updates and changes. I have a feeling that I'll finally be able to stay away from retail blasters (& the overpriced LCS) and get back with the hobby boxes to scratch my itch. I like the direction COMC is heading in and the personal feedback we are getting from Tim. The shipping update is also a plus. Glad to be a part of this. Probably like most of the COMC veterans, I think that this will bring both more sellers as well as a lot more buyers.

dooly 08-25-2009 11:02 AM

i noticed that for bulk shipping it is $10 extra for international ... is it possible to send first class to canada for the bulk shipping too? That way, shipping would cost a similar amount as shipping within the USA

ohiomike 08-25-2009 11:18 AM

For those that haven't seen it yet...

BULK SHIPPING:
# Minimum order is 50 cards
# Available the last 7 days of the month
# Packaged the first week of the month
# Shipped securely without sleeves
# Shipped via USPS Priority Mail
# $15 for the first 50 cards
# 15¢ for each additional card
# $10 extra for international orders
# $1 extra for each graded card

I'd just like to give kudos to Tim and the team at COMC for implementing this new rate. Its even better than I was hoping it would be. The lower the S/H is for our buyers, the more they will be willing and able to buy, and thus the better things will be for the COMC sellers. So with that said, I think there is still room for improvement in the future. But I believe this is definitely a fair deal for our buyers... and especially for buyers like me who are also sellers and do a lot of buying of cards to have cards shipped.

It has not even been a year since I discovered COMC and began buying/selling there... but in less than a year I have been more impressed with the innovations that have taken place there than I've been with anything ebay has done in the last decade. COMC truly is the future of buying/selling in this hobby!

ragingmensan 08-25-2009 11:37 AM

Will penny savers be used on bulk shipments?

ifish73 08-25-2009 11:42 AM

Tim,
Have you considered adding a non-sport category to your site?

ghost 08-25-2009 12:19 PM

Tim, welcome to Blowout. I was just thinking of joining COMC the day before this was announced!

A question on book values;
If we send in a card with no book because it is too soon to book, will the value be updated?
Also, what about book value changes? As in I send a card in bv at $25, then it jumps to $75.

Thank you!

And an add on that anyone can answer:
For sellers, you pay the initial card fee, and any storage fees, and that is it? I know the cashing out fee, but is that all there is? It seems like it, but I just want to make sure.

ragingmensan 08-25-2009 01:22 PM
If we send in a card with no book because it is too soon to book, will the value be updated?
Yes, they update book values periodically. It doesn't seem to be automatic, so values may not be updated right away. However, if you notice the book value is wrong you can notify the site and they will look into updating it.
Also, what about book value changes? As in I send a card in bv at $25, then it jumps to $75.
Book value changes are handled the same way. About once a month you will get an email with a spreadsheet that details your price changes. I have noticed that usually your asking price will be removed when a BV goes up so you will have the opportunity to adjust the price before someone buys it.
For sellers, you pay the initial card fee, and any storage fees, and that is it? I know the cashing out fee, but is that all there is? It seems like it, but I just want to make sure.
That pretty much covers it. Of course there are shipping costs, but those are paid by the buyer. This is indirectly relevant to sellers, however, because some of your cheap cards will be hard to move; almost no one will buy a penny card because it doesn't actually cost a penny--it costs at least 16 cents if you are the one taking it home. However, because there are no storage fees for asking prices of 25 cents or less, it is often worth the risk to try to flip these cheap cards.

cardsrus1 08-26-2009 05:13 PM

I have a suggestion, how about having somebody that can fix the errors on the listings. I have 16 items in my inventory that I cannot sell because nobody will fix them! They were uploaded over a month ago and I have clicked the "Wrong data?" button daily since then. I have given up explaining what is wrong, they are all rather easy to see, that is if someone would take the time to attempt to fix them. And while we are on the subject, how about fixing these errors. The first 11 cards are all clearly wrong, I have also reported these for well over a month now. I even sent you personally an E-mail about all of these cards two weeks ago with no reply and nothing being fixed yet:mad:

Sounds like you want a feature where you can express interest in a card, but you think the asking price is too high... Hmmm.... I will think about that. FYI, I am not a fan of letting people communicate directly on the site. That opens up a whole new class of potential security issues that I am not looking forward to policing.

timgetsch 08-26-2009 06:33 PM
Not sure if this question has been raised before, but here goes.

When looking at your own inventory and sorting cards, when you sort by "Only cards WITHOUT prices" you still see the cards that are flagged to ship. Is it possible to add a dropdown, or change the current option, to show just cards with no asking price while ignoring those that are marked to ship?
Great feature request! The site is updated so that you can do that now.
i noticed that for bulk shipping it is $10 extra for international ... is it possible to send first class to canada for the bulk shipping too? That way, shipping would cost a similar amount as shipping within the USA
Hmmm.... We have been concerned that shipping first class to Canada often takes 3-4 weeks, especially with larger boxes. Thank you for the feedback. For now, I don't want to make the shipping options any more complicated than it needs to be, but I am open to making changes if we commonly get similar feedback.
Will penny savers be used on bulk shipments?
Rather than using penny sleeves, we securely package the cards tightly in boxes. Of course, we always guarantee your satisfaction. In the off chance that any cards get damaged in shipment, just let us know, and we will take care of it.

These are great suggestions. I have a feeling that you guys are going to keep me busy for a very long time. :) FYI, a few of these things are already possible with the Bulk Price Editing tool.
The way these were listed in Beckett was very confusing, but we figured it out. They are all being corrected today.

On that same note..any way to notify the reportee about the change being made? I know the last time I reported a card, i had marked it not for sale (so I didnt accidently price it since it was wrong) and almost forgot about it. Think it spend 2 weeks in my inventory before I noticed it and then put it for sale.

I think you should end up getting the standard price change email with the PDF attached. The only time this wouldn't happen is if the data changed but the price didn't... or if we have a bug in our system. I belive we had an issue for a couple weeks last month that prevented the price change emails from going out. Normally those get sent out every time we upload any price changes, which could happen multiple times per day.

Tim, in this case it was a total data change. The Player listed was wrong. I can't remember who it was listed, lets say it was Farve, but the card was Pennington. It was fixed, but I never got any notice on it.

I have some cards from 2008 National Baseball Card Day from 2008 Topps and 2008 Upper Deck, These came from a mlb.com promotion, do you accept promotion cards. I am not sure if these particular cards are listed in Beckett.

Promo Response

Hey Tim,

Great Idea...for the Football promo to kickoff the Football season. How bout adding the Top 5 Fantasy players to the list. You can get an average by visiting a few sites and then takking the top 5 players or how bout players from last years Super bowl teams or perhaps players involved in Monday night football games for the month of September. Just some thoughts for some fun promos. Keep up the great work.

37Jetson 08-28-2009 09:08 PM

I loved the last time you ran the priority promo. I think $.10/card for the promo is a good idea and I have a few suggestions:

1950's and 1960's Baseball (keep building this segment with the new sellers)
2009 Football Autos and Game Used
Any card with at least a $30 Book Value
Super Premium products such as Exquisite
bigmon80 08-28-2009 09:31 PM

Hey Tim,

I like the promotions you have spoke of thus far. I have thought of a few ideas. Maybe every month or every other month run a special to send in 300 cards get 100 processed free or 200/50 or something like that.

Like my first idea maybe as sellers reachs certain amount of cards sent in they get so many free cards processed free or half price in there next shippment. Example Say I sent in 400 cards on time, then 300, then another300 later to make me reach the 1000 cards processed level. Maybe give a discount or some amount of cards processed for free on your next shipment.

Also this one might be a llittle difficult but run a standard ongoing promotion that allows you to send in any sport's new release within the first month of release and get priority service at .10 a card but the cards must be sorted with only that specific release and no other cards can be mixed in with that batch. This would make it easy on COMC when it comes to listing and give the seller an incentive to send stuff in right away.

washingtonmark 08-28-2009 11:04 PM

I would love to see a 10 Cent Allen and Ginter Month (: I would have a huge order coming in.

CardCache 08-28-2009 11:25 PM

May I suggest Daequan Cook as one of the players added to the promo list this month? :) I'm about to send in my personal collection to the site, and have about 100 autos/GU's of his... it would help out greatly!

So yeah, add Daequan!

Instead of just Topps Chrome football how about changing it to Chrome so you include Bowman Chrome too.

I'd like to see a basketball promotion for Oct maybe players from last years conference finals teams, rookie cards from the 90s, autographs from the 50 greatest players.

pedro45kobe8 08-29-2009 10:36 AM

I wish comc would implement a filter system when searching for cards. For example, if I only want to see cards with a bv of $5 of more, 85% off or better, then I simply fill out the filter form. Maybe this could be an advanced search option form that you fill out, with the link right under the regular search box. Also include the option to hide all items that are your own.

I like the idea of free processing on the top 5 fantasy players also...

I would also like to see baseball award winner frontrunners like MVP, CY (Pujols, Teixeira, Jeter, Mauer, Beckett, Lincecum, etc)....if not this month maybe for October.

I am also still getting cards that I have not flagged "Not For Sale" showing up under that option.

If you are still looking for ideas for specials I would recommend hockey cards, any and all

iluvfish2 08-30-2009 06:36 PM

Tim

Question and/or suggestion for you. Is there any way to at least make an offer valid for a minimum 24 hours before they could be canceled? Not sure how common this is, but it seems almost daily I get offers made and canceled within minutes of someone making them. Most I might consider (some are low ball offers), but just a request.

dooly 08-30-2009 06:49 PM

promotion for chrome baseball would be nice too since it is quite popular at the moment

pearljam_cubbies 08-31-2009 05:24 AM

I think it would be cool if when you could search for "auto" the base cards from the sets with the word autograph wouldnt show up. I dont know exactly how to get around this but I do know everytime I search and I see that Big Country Bryant Reeves signature rookies autobilia for 25 cents Im like :D and want to buy it then I see its not the actual autographed card and Im like :(
lol

jefflasvegas 08-31-2009 01:06 PM

Suggestions

A couple ideas for future features on the site or bulk editor:

1. be able to seach your inventory for cards that are not the lowest price available. (could be added to pulldown tab from site or bulk editor). This would be my biggest time saver on the site as I like to be competitive in my pricing.

2. top 10 or top 100 sorts of most active cards sold in the past 90 days. can be by individual card, player, or set. this would help determine what to send in.

Also, for the flippers and bulk rate shippers, I lowered many $3 and $4 cards down to 25 cents.

Thanks for the great site Tim!

PS. My shortlist to buy is 1971 topps baseball #648. I'm willing to pay $10 for a non-creased card. Also willing to drop $200 on a Kobe Bryant RC Chrome.

ddearing 08-31-2009 03:51 PM

Tim, not trying to take advantage of your generosity, but for the Topps Chrome Football special, would that include uncirculated cards? I know those typically cost more. I am putting together the 2007 Uncirculated Red Refractor set and have a bunch of extras that I would send in.
Thanks again for a great site.

Storage fees

Hey Tim,

I've emailed your staff (staff@checkoutmycards.com) numerous times and even called in 3 times since March. The problem can't be too difficult to fix as you've fixed it before for another seller(http://www.blowoutcards.com/forums/ebay-checkoutmycards-online-selling-shows/4934-checkoutmycards-com-215.html#post195269).

Here is the situation, my cards were sent out on October 28th of last year. On your blog (Graded Cards & Lower Processing Fees « CheckOutMyCards.com Blog) you state that any cards sent before November 1st, 2008 were exempt from storage fees until Jan. 1st, 2011.
I clearly meet this criteria but I've been charged storage fees on the cards I've sent in on Oct. 28, 2008 since March 1st.

I know you're a busy guy and you're doing great stuff, but I've patiently waited 6 months now. Can you please correct this situation and reverse the fees for the cards sent from that shipment? (There are 6 cards being appropriately charged a storage fee.)
My username is also DFlash on your site.

Thank you!

James
