Alex Ovechkin 50 in 50, can he do it?
7 goals in 7 games, its a long way off for 50 and 50 (the last player to come close was Cam Neely with 50 in 49 games, but it is 50 of his team games so injury kept it from happening).
Washington gets Nashville next, and their goaltending is a mess, so if he gets a pair he'll be +1 on his way to 50 in 50. Nik Backstrom was dropped to line two, but the super-unit is still together on the power play. This could get interesting. |
Mike Richards has 6 in only 5 games so maybe he gets 60 in 50
|
Hope he does it... I enjoy watching great accomplishments in sports.
|
It can only help the NHL if he does it, so I hope he does. Then, they can still go out in the first or second round like usual.
|
I know willcvincent would like him to do it after his incredible SPX pull. I'd like to see him accomplish it too.
|
I'd like to see him do it just to see if Don Cherry would give him his props :D

As long as he doesn't celebrate it and acts like it is just an ordinary goal:rolleyes: |
He is off to a great start and can score in bunches, so I could see him doing it.
|
Wow, chalk up another pair tonight.

Ovechkin Hits 75 Goals This Year
|
Looks to me like Ovechkin and Kovalchuk made a side bet in the offseason...first to 50 wins. They both are off to hot starts.

The thing is that defenses can key in on Kovy, if they pull that with Ovechkin there is still a ton of dangerous players on the ice, including Backstrom who is starting to figure out that goaltenders have trouble with his shot too. |
13 goals in 12 games so far. 2 periods left to go .
|
50 in 50 is pretty much dead, at least for this season, but even if AO misses a month I think 55-60 goals is doable.
|
I was really hoping to see Ovie take a run at 50/50.
|
I was hoping more to see him make a run at 550. I'm going to guess that that will happen before 50/50.

550? Explain. |

Most shots in a season. Held strong since 1970/1 by Phil Esposito. |

He can still get 50 in 50, just not the Caps first 50 of the season. I read he is out on a week to week basis, not day to day. Gotta love the NHL with their upper body injury and lower body injury reports. It still leaks out and obviously the caps won't rush him back early so why not just say its a shoulder injury ? |

Great bumper sticker in Beantown from back in the day.... Jesus Saves but...... Esposito scores on the rebound! |

50 in 50 historically has been 50 goals in the teams first 50 games, otherwise Cam Neely would be in the 50 in 50 club. |
Don't forget Jari Kurri also once scored 50 goals in the first 50 he played. But like Neely, they weren't scored in the team's first 50 games played.
Nevertheless, 50 goals in 50 games played is still pretty darn special and Ovie has a good shot of still doing that. |
Jari Kurri had some ridiculous seasons but they were out shined by what his teammates did.
|
Kurri has always been one of the most overlooked and under appreciated players the league has ever had. His stuff is pretty much an after thought in the hobby compared to players with lesser numbers. If he were a Canadian born player who posted those numbers in say Toronto or Montreal, he'd be a hockey god.

So very true. But for a Kings fan like myself, it is great because whenever I find something of his on Ebay or at a card show, it is usually within my budget. |
Wow, Kovalchuk has picked up right where he left off.
|
I am really surprised at how well he and his team are doing so far. I would love it if Kovalchuk ended up heading out to LA to play once his contract is up.

I'm betting he stays in Atlanta. With all the s#@t he's been through with that team, I don't see him leaving. |
If Atlanta makes the playoffs, I can see him staying. If not, he is gone for sure. Too much money will be thrown his way.
|
Dan Snyder's parents essentially begged him to stay in Atlanta, Snyder's father gave him the watch he was going to give Dan (I read this in the Atlanta Journal Constitution). For all of the money-grubbing these Russian players get accused of, Kovy is married to a Georgia-girl, has his daughter in school in Georgia, and I don't think he is likely to leave.

Hey, AO is going to be back. The loss of six games is huge, but in theory he could score 50 goals in 44 games and still do 50 in 50.
The 50 in 50 watch is back on, however Anze Kopitar is now in the watch as well. |
It would be nice to have 2 50/50 guys, but I'm not going to hold my breath. I think Ovie is the only one of the two with a legitimate shot at it, even with being injured for a few games.
|
Kopitar 14 goals in 21 games
AO 14 goals in 20 games, but he missed six so he's averaged a goal per game. If either catches fire they can make up the gap, but I would bet on AO. |
AO scored in his first game back :)
