Shaq does not sign his Panini cards
This thread is pure speculation. However, I'm very confident he uses the same person he has sign all of his fan mail to sign his Panini cards.
I believe Shaq's dad used to sign his fan mail but I'm not sure if he's still alive. The thread on fanmail says "There are rumors that another family member, or a assistant is signing now." See this thread: Fanmail.biz • View topic - Shaquille O'Neal - SUCCESS? Compare the signature in that thread to his Panini signatures. They're pretty much the same. Fake Panini signature: Real signature: His actual autograph doesn't match his Panini autographs. Sure, the Panini signatures resemble his autograph, but there are distinctions (like extra squiggles, and the way the "S" is written) that giveaway the fact that somebody else has been signing Shaq's Panini cards for the last couple years. Compare his Panini signatures to autographs Shaq has actually signed throughout his NBA career - whether for card companies or in person. Now that I look through eBay, it looks like he USED to actually sign autographs for Panini, hence this real signature: Anyway... This has bothered me for years and I think somebody needs to get to the bottom of this. I expect many people to think I'm crazy for assuming such a thing, but if true, this is a crime on both Shaq and Panini. |
Ack, why didn't the photos resize?
|
His TTM autos never pass JSA or PSA/DNA and they look just like his Panini autos so this doesn't surprise me one bit
|
Lay off the pipe, shaq is all about making money. The extra squiggly line is not a big deal. One is his on ball auto the other is his taking timeģgetting paid auto
|
This could very well be the case. I know he's had some recent signings - why not use some of those flat items to compare instead of a basketball?

Good point. I'll do some research and see if I can find any pics from them. He did a signing for Steiner earlier this year and most of his autographs from that are shown on ebay: shaq steiner | eBay You can see that none of his autographs for Steiner resemble his Panini autograph. |

The ramifications of fake signings for a company that is payong heavily for his signatures is very serious and I doubt he is faoing panini signatures |

Assuming you mean "faking", I'm sure it's not a big deal for him. I'm sure his people are always paying off people or companies for legal stuff. I'm also unsure how nobody at Panini would notice this. Shaq may have had different variations of his signature over time, but there are some things that have ALWAYS remained the same... One of them is the S. Also, when he does include an O, it NEVER looks like this: 2014 15 Panini Flawless Shaquille Shaq Oneal Auto on Card Encased 15 Magic | eBay |
They are real.

Can we get ccunman in here? He had shaq sign some of his logoman cards so he would know the answer

Here is his thread from the auto signing

Here's my Shaq auto from Topps to help out in the comparison...

Shaq has more signature versions than teams he played for...

You can see that none of his autographs for Steiner resemble his Panini autograph.
These are the ones you want to compare to, actual sit-down public signing sessions where players tend to sign their cleanest autographs. Most players sign very differently when rushing through a hotel lobby or whatever. That said, one would expect the cleanest autos on the Panini cards as well but he could have rushed through them just to get it over with.
The ramifications of fake signings for a company that is payong heavily for his signatures is very serious and I doubt he is faoing panini signatures
A few years ago a hockey player got caught using a rubber stamp to "sign" his rookie autos. Collectors spotted it, called him out, and the card companies (both Panini and UD) got involved. It was quite the fiasco. Card companies need to witness all signings, it's that simple. Have a rep meet the player at the hotel or wherever and make sure it's him doing the signing. This "...and or sent from, and certified to its authenticity by, ______" stuff like UD does from time to time doesn't mean you're getting the real deal. Doesn't Topps witness every single auto that is signed for them? That's the way to go. You can't always trust a player if you're just mailing him the cards and any Joe Schmoe can sign them and "certify" them. |

FWIW, I have known him personally since 2002; he is a friend. A) He wouldn't 'do' fans like that B) I cannot tell you the amount of stuff he has signed for me and given me over the years - mostly his asking "Do you need autographs for so and so etc" C) He is a very astute businessman and wouldn't mess with the integrity of his brand -or turn down what amounts to be free money.. |

Oh I'm not questioning at all man, I've owned quite a few shaq autos myself, I was more referring to ccunanan because I know him to be THE shaq collector, so I just wanted him to put his input in on the subject |

The companies do the best they can with the limited resources, one of our guys has gotten an in person Shaq that looked just like the Panini ones FYI. |

I'm not anti-Panini but with the amount of athletes they work with, I'm sure this happens more than we know. |
Here's his Autographics card for comparison. Slightly different from his Topps counterparts, but also different from his Panini ones.

I imagine it would require significant resources. |
If you actually think all of your hero's are signing your cards then you're just naive. Do most of them? Probably...are there some who just let others sign their names for them? Absolutely.

I would be surprised if he faked his autos. I do think he has had a few different variations over the years and it would also depend on if he's signing 100's of pieces at a time or signing a small amount. Also, if you look at his Classic auto from 1992 it changed significantly to his stuff in the 2000s.
When I was at his signing at Steiner earlier in the year he was pretty careful on what part of the card/jersey I asked him to sign on. |
Being in Orlando I've seen a huge amount of Shaq autos.. I've stayed away from most of his recent Panini Autos just because they looked off. Not all of them but certain sets I no confidence in the sig.
