Ryan Howard cut from Braves minor league contract

Probably the end of the line for him, even though he says he still has something in the tank.

First off, I didn't even know he was even in the Braves system to begin with. Anyway, the guy is 37 and he was bad even before he was old, but after looking on baseball-reference, I didn't realize he was THAT bad.

He won the MVP in 2006, his first full season in the majors, and then from 2010-2016, he was literally worthless (more precisely, less than worthless), putting up -2.1 bWAR TOTAL (yes, that's a negative) for those 7 years, while being paid $154M. Wow.

I don't remember any MVP falling off that massively that fast. Here's to hoping teams are smarter now and there won't be many more 'Ryan Howard contracts' in the future.

Dale Murphy is the other one that comes to memory. They were similar ages when their drop-off occurred too.

texmcpherson 05-08-2017 09:35 PM

Does that mean his hobby window has passed?

2003 Bowman's Best RC Auto

LCM1223 05-08-2017 09:41 PM

Yea it was tough to see his decline but even tougher knowing how much he was getting paid to decline.

Should've hung em up after the last game of the season last year after the send off he got

hofcollector2 05-08-2017 10:19 PM

He should not have even won that MVP in 2006

HeritageKing 05-08-2017 10:34 PM

Brought a title to his team. What has Trout and Harper done?

Badly but kept pulling Mauer and others

centereacan06 05-08-2017 10:45 PM

Wouldn't be surprised to see him end up in Asia.

oh cmon, that was more that they had prime utley and rollins than howard's below average contributions.

it'd be like saying david ross brought the cubs a world series.

You say that like if you replace Howard with Harper or Trout the Phillies don't win the title. The probably win in 2009 as well with either of those two.

Nk2014 05-08-2017 10:52 PM

I remember in 2007 and getting his autograph at a Giants game, was 11 at the time, was really nice, I was so excited. He was the biggest person I had ever seen it seemed like. Well he made his money it's a shame he fell off, baseball is like no other sport so mental

TWard 05-08-2017 11:51 PM

His downslope was one of the quickest I've ever seen. It seemed like he was hitting 40 HRs one year and an MVP candidate, then the next year, he was essentially the worst player on his team. Regardless, he got paid an insane amount of money, so good for him, even though he was a detriment to the Phillies his last few years there.

That 2003 Bowman's Best auto was insane, though. They blew up like crazy. I wanted one so badly but didn't give in, thankfully.

I meant this 🙄

Chris Carpenter pitched a hell of a game. I think it was a one hitter and the hit was a triple

fulltritty 05-09-2017 05:07 AM

I'm waiting for the National to sign him up as a VIP signer to add to the already bad list of players they are giving us again this year. They'll hype is MVP award as if he was a good player.
