Bought a new guitar....

Hiya all,

This thread is going to be a mess and I apologize lol. I've been playing acoustic guitar mostly the past years. I own a Gibson J-45 standard and a Gibson J-45 Custom (I know what you're thinking.. diversify you heathen)

That being said - I decided I want to get back into electric guitar as it is how I started years and years ago. So I bought a 2017 Gibson Les Paul Standard since my dream was to always own a Gibson Les Pual.

So now to the Q's.. I need a new amp and do not wanna spend a ton on one yet. Maybe $300 or less. Also need suggestions on some pedals and various other gear. So if there are any guitar nerds... please feel free to fill me in and help me relive my dream as a rockstar lol

You'll probably get help from more knowledgeable people here but did you check musicians friend and sort amps by ratings?

Gretschs have always been such beautiful guitars. I always felt they got overlooked some. They have a really cool history.

Not sure if you are only interested in actual amps, but I highly recommend software called Amplitube by IK Multimedia. They have a few different versions for mobile/PC/Mac. It sounds terrific and has a wide variety of amps, cabinets, mic/room placement, effects, pedals, etc...

Edit: IMO a good amp under $300 is the Pignose G40V. 40 watt all tube. This things is LOUD and will easily drive a full size guitar cabinet.

if I were in the market for a new amp, I'd look used.

There are lots of choices in that range. Fender Blues Jr., Vox ac10, or something solid state like the boss katana come to mind immediately.

what kind of tones are you looking for? and do you need to gig with it, or home use?

Depends on what you are wanting to play, but you can get a good tube amp for $300 or go with a non tube for around $100.

The old Peavey Bandit TransTube amps that are 1x12 and have 100w are great...you can get those cheap on craigslist.

On the other end, a Peavey Triple XXX 40W tube combo runs around $300 and they pop up every now and then...excellent amps and they have a good clean channel.

Peavey makes great amps for the money...if you have the budget for a Marshall or an EVH or a Fender...great...but if you are sticking to $300 or less, be hard to beat Peavey.

If you go with a Tube amp you get the best of both worlds and they usually hold value or increase in value over time. With the way modern effects go, you can get a POD or something like that and run it through the clean channel on a tube amp and get about any sound you like.

One thing, on the Gibson LP you ordered, make sure you don't try to wax it or clean it with anything that has a silicone base to it...it'll ruin the finish over time....you need something like a Gibson polish or I use a product called Virtuoso polish & cleaner.

If you want to chat, hit me up in PM, be glad to help out.

I vote tube amp all the way. And, everybody needs a wah pedal. Beautiful gretsch! I have a strat that typically collects dust.....

Hi,
I think the best is to go trying the amp in store with your guitar, each one sounds different and it depends what kind of music you play...

First :
take a full tube amp, transistor have a bad sound and you'll change in a few months...
I can recommand you to take a look on "small" tube amp (like 5W, most brands make this),
it's enough for play with a band, and not too louder for practice in your room ;)

Second :
When the guitar is brand new, it's better to take it to a luthier (guitar builder) for a good adjustment, because usually the guitars coming out of factory are not well adjust

Third :
important thing, choose a good cable jack, cheaper cable will change the tone of the signal guitar to amp and you'll lose bass or treble ("lava cable" is for me the more transparent) :)!

Ps, i edit with this link for you can have an idea on 5W tube amp

May the sound be with you :flex:

You guys are all the best! I might have to pm you all with some questions very soon.

The guitar just came today! I'll try to post pictures later. It's a 2017 Gibson Les Paul Standard T in blueberry burst (controversial color but I reallly dig it).

Just sucks i forgot my old amp is shot or else I would've just ordered one along with my guitar lol. I'm definitely looking at all the stuff you all recommended and should have one this weekend!

This is my simple setup nothing special. I only play by myself so it does the trick when i get the urge.

hey Roger really great gear :)!
but don't give him idea to have a GAS, cause your mesa boogie pedal cost his amp budget :D

Ps : Try to use your MXR effects on 18v, it'll added headroom on your sound
