Fernando Tatis Jr

Seems like he's worthy of his own thread now. He's tripled in his last three games, is hitting .279/.369/.492. Has 13 HR and 16 SB as an 18 yr old SS in the MWL. The strikeouts are a concern but he seems to have gotten those in check recently as the walks seem to be up and the strikeouts down. Ranked #22 at BP, #101 at BA, #100 on MLB.com and figures to be in the #20-30 range when Law's list comes out next week.

I personally saw him in spring training this year and was super impressed as he was one of the best players on the High A field. Crazy power and it shows up in games. I had a mini stash before spring training but went crazy by my standards ever since. I've probably spent 4-5x more on Tatis then I ever have on anyone else. I'll try and get the collection uploaded next week.

What does the BO community think? Anyone else have stashes? Future hobby superstar or future bust?

James shields

I bought a bunch of his stuff in the last week when he started heating up. Had quite a few things on my watch list that I was debating and then they all disappeared. So I just went and grabbed whatever I could lol.

Nothing crazy but hopefully this one turns out to be a good deal...

This will probably come across wrong, but this is a clear attempt to drive interest to someone you are done buying. Not a fan of these threads.

To me Tatis is one 60 game stretch away from being considered nothing. I don't buy his potential.

I think this could be said about most prospects.....

Yaga 07-08-2017 10:28 AM

Speaking of Tatis, I put out a question to BA on their top 100 list asking how the other place had him ahead of bichette and they had him at 100... They replied with this...

Tatis is excellent but has a big hole in his game, which is he does not handle average or better breaking balls well (that has come up from multiple scouts throughout the season, even when he's been going well). He is very young and the assumption is he will improve with time, but it's an assumption, not a guarantee. Tatis and Vlad Jr. do not have that same hole, which is why they have better slash lines across the board in all three categories playing in the same league at the same age. There is a potential future star in there for Tatis, and thus he's one of the top prospects in the game, but he needs to prove he can close that hole before reaching that level.

I think most of the veteran prospectors will agree Baseball America is a joke. If anybody's hyping up their own prospects its them. Bogus hot lists and prospect rankings and it has gotten progressively worse year after year...

Homerun 07-08-2017 10:41 AM

I don't know how good Tatis will be but I can't believe the Sox traded him for James friggin Shields.

Probably true, but half the threads on here are like this these days.

Would you still be saying that if he was still with your White Sox?

I agree, but I don't see that many that are this blatant.

I've been prospecting 7-8 years, and have never done this--but I suppose I'm in the minority.

Yea, I can see how it can come across that way. I'm not selling anything this year so not trying to gain anything. I've been wanting to start a thread for a while but held off. With prices having doubled and nothing available on eBay I figured I wasn't hurting anyone's search.

Padres haven't had a legit superstar since Tony Gwynn so it's exciting that we finally have a guy w superstar potential. I read the million threads on Harper, Trout, Judge and every Yankees/Cubs/Red Sox prospect here daily so it's cool when the Padres finally have someone breaking out w hobby potential.

I keep seeing people say that BA hypes up "their own prospects" - what does that even mean? How does BA have prospects?

(real questions, I'm obviously missing something)

Yea, interesting. In the BP chat they said some of their sources think he's a top 10 prospect right now. He definitely struck out a ton to start the year but seems to have gotten it under control lately. Walks are up.

JWBlue 07-08-2017 02:36 PM

OP is a Padres fan and excited about a top prospect.

Where do you see the BP chat? I'd love to read it! I'm not familiar with their site at all... I was just poking around, but I don't find their site too friendly to find anything :(

Just wait until he hits 3 grand slams in one inning.
