Drew Brees Card Graded BGS 9.5 Gains Almost $9,000 in Value After Trimming

Investigations into trimmed cards have been a major topic here on the Blowout Boards now since the end of last year. BO member s have uncovered dozens of cards graded by both PSA and BGS which have been proved to be trimmed or otherwise altered.
For football cards, it appears that two names more than any other have seen key cards, especially rookie cards, targeted by trimmers: Tom Brady and Drew Brees. In fact, there is an entire thread dedicated to Drew Brees rookie cards trimmed by Superior Sports Investments (SSI).

Last night, I was posting a few lower-value Tom Brady rookies which were purchased, trimmed, and graded for high grades by Beckett Grading Services (BGS), the last of which was a 2000 UD Vintage Brady/Redmond BGS 9.5 rookie card sold by eBay seller breakersrowe.

Anytime an altered card is uncovered, I look over the rest of a seller's inventory, including sold items. Admittedly, I did not do this at first with breakersrowe, but I got around to it late last night. I found this card: a 2001 Playoff Contenders Drew Brees Autograph, graded BGS 9.5 Gem Mint, sold by breakersrowe on 1/9/2019 for $17,649. This card was graded by BGS on 11/19/2018.

Using Worthpoint, I discovered this same card was once graded a BGS 8.5 NM-MT+, and was sold by eBay seller mvpsportscardz on 8/31/2018 for $8,950.

As the evidence shows below, this card was trimmed:

The monetary difference between the BGS 8.5 and BGS 9.5 is a staggering $8,699! All this for a few quick cuts. I want to be clear that I do not know who trimmed this card. For all I know, breakersrowe might have been an unwilling seller of this card. If someone knows seller mvpsportscardz, please find out if they have the information as to who bought this Brees on 8/31 when it was a BGS 8.5. That information will help us trace the history of this card. As always, BODA's help is appreciated in this investigation. Let's focus on outing the bad cards in this hobby.

Great work as usual

So unfortunate. Nothing shocks me about grading anymore.

SirTommyWinAlot 03-27-2019 10:29 PM

Yeah this needs to be investigated. Somebody should get the ball rolling on this.

Pretty sure that's what superdan did.

no i mean contact the attorney general's office. Better Business Bureau.Beckett. This is turning into a rampant problem.

How much money needs to be involved/scammed for the AGO or BBB to get involved?

Whether it is number of auctions or amount of sales, both have a staggering high number. Which is more reason for this to be investigated from a higher power

Sometimes you just have to find out by getting your hands dirty. I might just go ahead and send some emails for shits and giggles and see where it gets me.

I think you will need to find a law enforcement official or DA who is a collector to truly understand how bad this problem is. But all the evidence needed to convict some of these guys is here on the boards.

Does anyone have any info if eBay seller mvpsportscardz is a BO member? He holds the key to finding out more about this trimmed Brees.

I can tell you that on 11/17 breakersrowe was at the Show in Chicago. I did a pretty big deal with him over 10k. I also watched him buy out a couple of showcases from someone that was probably 90% already graded gem. It was all high end. Would not surprise me if the card was purchased at that show and or RCR’d then graded at the show. Not sure. Don’t believe that card was in the deal that he bought from the other high roller. Their deal was well over 50k I believe.

It's incredible just how much of this is starting to occur on marquee cards like this.

I'd be rather surprised if Adam (breakersrowe) was the one who trimmed it. He's one of the bigger buyers in the industry and, as the above poster stated, buys a significant amount of items at shows across the country. More likely he trusts the people he buys from as he throws around some serious cash and is always getting new inventory left and right. I've dealt with him and I know many other dealers who have also. I think it's more likely someone trimmed it and then passed it off to him.

too bad important people in the hobby like blowout, beckett, psa just turn a blind eye to this stuff as its bad for business all around for stuff like this to keep coming out

Jay9Suited 03-27-2019 11:30 PM

Not the first case of trimming with BreakersRowe. They also turned a Mike Trout Gold Update PSA 9 into a BGS 10.

I don't know Adam from breakersrowe, but this case has a much different feel to it than when I posted the trimmed cards of Bill from SSI. My gut tells me Adam bought this card already graded BGS 9.5 and is not involved in the trimming. However, I do believe Adam is ethically obligated to contact the person who bought it off him on eBay for over $17,000 and offer that person a refund if he wants it.

Mvpsportscardz holds the keys here.

Could you link to this info? I couldn't find this thread.

SuperDan you are awesome! I hope the buyer of the Gem gets this information and can get back the cash and most of all I hope we can find out who bought the card as a 8.5

Basically starts at post #6526, I will try to find scans of the card slabbed as a PSA 9, they aren't showing up anymore.

Edit: Scans of the card in question:

I hate to be the person to say I was right all along about card grading.

But I was right all along.

Pretty much the death nail when someone says this.

swabie2424 03-28-2019 12:22 AM

How about a top notch investigative journalist with an interest in sports, pop culture and business. A big expose in a major newspaper or on TV. Imagine Bryant Gumbel on Real Sports (HBO). That would get law enforcement’s attention. And really put the grading companies on the hot seat. It’d make for a juicy story. All the elements are there. Famous athletes. Greed. Corruption. Money.

rittdk01 03-28-2019 02:14 AM

All modern cards are going to be questioned from here on out. Too much money for these dealers to resist, unfortunately. To anyone throwing thousands of dollars on modern cards, good luck.
