This has lifted the value of his card to $15—a 650% increase in less than two months.

Card buyers were skeptical of Christian Yelich in March even after an MVP season in 2018. But he’s obliterating last year’ space, crushing a league-best 18 homers through Thursday. That’s boosted his card value 525%. Similarly, the card market figured Javier Baez would slide back to his pre-2018 hitting level
for the Cubs. Instead, he picked up where he left off, boosting investment returns by 150%.

Big-market stars such as Bellinger and the Yankees’ Aaron Judge, the face of the hobby in 2017, typically increase prices, according to Fleischer. With Judge currently on the injured list, the slugger earning the most buzz in New York is the Mets’ Peter Alonso, whose $60 officially autographed card has rocketed to $400. But Mets fans may need to be cautious. They flocked to pitcher Matt Harvey’s cards after his 2013 breakout season and now those cards can be found in the discount bin.

Christian Yelich's 2010 Bowman Chrome Blue Refractor Auto has gone from $75 two years ago to one selling for $1,900 just last week. If people who don't collect cards look this way, we'll see a LOT of money coming into the hobby. Speculating will become even more insane (speculating about speculating!).

Sorry to be a Debbie Downer, but unless the hobby cleans up, we’ll also see more fraud that will come along with it... but maybe investors won’t care.
