SPOILERS AHEAD - Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - SPOILER THREAD!!!!!!

SPOILERS AHEAD

Figured we should have a place to talk about the movie without ruining it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

I'm heading out the door in about 10 minutes, can't freaking wait!

LRV 12-19-2019 06:42 PM

It takes place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..

Damn you!! Ruined it for me...:(

Spoilers ahead
.

I didn’t like the film but other audience members were clapping and cheer at parts.

The movies jumps around from set piece to set piece. The story introduces a bunch of new characters who don’t really add any value to the plot. They shouldn’t have shoehorned Leia into the film. The Jedi training stuff could have been shortened by mentioning it in the title crawl.

Ford is there only because they don’t have enough Carrie Fisher footage and dialogue to make the scene work.

It seems to hit some of the same story beats as Return of the Jedi:
ROTJ: Threepio’s programming won’t allow him impersonate a deity and save the team. TROS: He can’t verbalize the ciphers to help the team.

ROTJ: Ewoks help fight the empire. TROS: AWOL Stormtroopers help fight the First Order

ROTJ and TROS: Giant fleets facing off.

ROTJ and TROS: Celebrations in the forest. Friends hug, everyone is happy.

They all die.

The End.

I enjoyed it, I'm sure people will have issues with it like always, but I think they have un-fair expectations. Why is it a problem to have a similar feel to the past movies yet with a new storyline? It's a series of movies that have a common theme and style, would be weird to do something totally new yet again after it was blasted by people in the last one.

I'm assuming that new trilogy they're working on will involve that girl? Would be a weird line by Lando if not.

Wish they would have said how Maz ended up with Luke's Lightsaber.

And was I the only one else who feels like that kiss was a terrible idea seeing as aren't they kind of related seeing as Palpatine created Anakin?

Well it wouldn't be the first time there was an incestuous kiss in the Star Wars universe lol.

I'm in the same mindset as you though. Many are gonna break this down like they were Siskel & Ebert and no matter how good a movie is,they'll still find a way to complain about it. That's just the culture we live in now.

With that being said,I also enjoyed the movie. I was entertained and that's all I expect from a movie.

That’s true, I didn’t think of that.

But that time it wasn’t known at the time that they were related at least.

DSizzle31 12-19-2019 11:34 PM

Agree with you both. I enjoyed the heck out of it and my 12 year old son did too.

It really answered most, if not all, of the issues that people had with 8. I really enjoyed the end with Rey at the Lars homestead staring at the two suns.

rocketfan86 12-19-2019 11:42 PM

I don't know much of the Star Wars lore but I was entertained.

So was Snoke someone that Palpatine created and then was another being, or was he just a body that Palpatine was remotely moving/speaking through?

88horsepower 12-20-2019 02:28 AM

I just got back and absolutely loved it.

Which is frustrating. Seemed rush

I think it was a nod to the story of Darth Plagueis the Wise that Palpatine told Anakin in Episode 3. He had the power to create life and he taught this to his apprentice (presumably Palpatine) before Palpatine eventually killed him in his sleep. I'm assuming he created Snoke using this ability judging by the other Snoke-like beings they showed when Kylo first arrived on the Sith planet.

I felt the movie jumped around a lot from sith world, to spy world, to rebel world, to sand world, to star destroyer, to snow world, to ocean world, to Jedi world.

Emperor’s plan seems a bit odd. Tell the galaxy he’s coming back to get them, rather then launching a surprise attack. And then use the same method of trying to turn someone to the dark side

eldavojohn 12-20-2019 09:21 AM

SPOILER ALERT!
If you liked the movie, please do not read this post. I'm only going to complain about this once and won't engage in arguing about this. My intent is not to ruin the movie for people who liked it.

I really really did not like the film. I did not care much for Force Awakens and loved The Last Jedi. I felt like TROS was worse than TFA by a long ways. At least TFA was fun. I think that if you like Marvel movies, you're going to love TROS. I don't like Marvel movies. They're just not my cup of tea.

My specific complaints are numerous so let's start with the few good things:

It had some really good visuals and special effects.
It had some really good sound and music.
I liked Babu Frick. I liked General Pryde. I wish we had seen more of the Jedi Hunter.
By dumb summer action movie standards, it was a good movie.

Okay with that out of the way let's scratch the surface of what I didn't like:

- It acted like The Last Jedi never happened (Luke merely says "I was wrong" when asked about his own internal conflict and self-exile).
- Rose Tico is relegated to the role of administrative assistant. DJ no longer exists.
- The exposition was fast and clunky. Some of the cut sequences gave me no time at all to even absorb what was happening. The movie opens with ridiculous cuts at a frenetic pace that was not just confusing but annoying. Either I'm just too old or the director was afraid that if a scene lasted more than five minutes, we'd see through the paper thin one dimensional motives of every character.
- There is no journey or sense of journey. Goals change every other minute.
- The Force can now seemingly do anything at all. Like, anything. In fact it suffers the same problems that Judeo-Christian god suffers: if the force can make AWOL stormtroopers fight against the bad guys (Finn and Jannah), bring people back to life, destroy entire fleets and let you talk to memories of dead people, why don't the masters of yore simply do those things?
- There is no finality in death. Why doesn't the Emperor simply come back after Rey "kills" him at the end of the movie? He did it before. Ben brings Rey back (or swaps life force or something). Sure bring back Ben Solo's dad as a memory, why not muddy the force rules further so the fans can see their favorite roguish character one last time?
- Lack of sacrifice is disgustingly pervasive. C3PO's memory gets wiped -- why bother writing this into the story? They just make Artoo inject it back into him later -- a scene that only takes away the sacrifice as we don't hear much from Threepio for the rest of the movie. Why? Why? Why? Chewbacca dies but wait your wookie was in another ship. Why? Why? Why? Why give Rey an internal conflict only to whisk it away with a super terrible "Just kidding guys!" Rey dies but then gets brought back and the Return of the Jedi mimicry is complete with the "bad guy" being the "good guy" sacrificing himself for the real "good guy".
- The thousand Death Stars had people on them. Where did these people come from? JJ Abrahms is so bad at story telling that he just says "Death Star but bigger and better and more of them". You know, twice now he's done this. Get one original idea, dude, just one. Even James Bond films have the decency to change the means of world domination.
- The fan service was too much. Why did Rey return Leia's saber to Tatooine? Why did she even know what Tatooine was. Why did she go there? Did Luke tell her how much he loved moisture farming? Endless fan service. ENDLESS. How does Lando get anywhere? Dude is magic because he was in ESB & RotJ?
- Hyperspace micro-jumping is confusing in so many ways and apparently relies on skill. It is problematic from a science fiction perspective and was clearly just for clumsy fan service. All the other movies say Anakin/Vader is the galaxy's best pilot. Never once does he micro-jump when it would have benefitted him -- the greatest force user at the time. Poe Dameron does it just to escape TIE fighters though.
- Chewie got his medal that he didn't get in ANH. Such insipid fan service. All his friends from that battle are dead but I bet he's happy he got that!
- There were a ton of scientifically problematic things. If the Death Star crashed on a planet, that planet would be dead for millions of years. It's simple planetary mechanics. When those super star destroyers are falling to planets at the end, that's likely the end of a continent there. That particulate matter being ejected up into the atmosphere would like block out the sun for centuries. How do those super star destroyers get destroyed? They are lightyears away from the emperor/rey battle. How do we cut to cloud city and Endor and all those other planets?
- The plot writing and dialogue felt more like Fast & the Furious quality than Star Wars quality.
- It was stupid to have Rey be the Emperor's granddaughter -- who was the Emperor's wife? It was even stupider to say that Luke & Leia knew the whole time and didn't tell her. Rey Palpatine -- WHAT A TWIST!
- General Hux being a spy simply to usurp Ren was stupid -- has there ever in the history of Earth been a spy who was jealous of #1 and so gave critical information/aid to their enemies?
- Poe's past seems like a lightweight watered down imitation of Han Solo's backstory.
- Force Ghost Luke should just keep fighting battles and not disappear anymore. He can interact with physical things, he can use the force in the living world -- oh right THERE IS NO FINALITY IN DEATH ANYMORE. This movie actually undoes sacrifices of past Star Wars movies like The Last Jedi -- it's meaningless that Luke used the last of his life force to save the resistance. Arguably he's better off as a force ghost. Which raises the question: do force ghosts need to eat and sleep ... I personally feel like the midichlorians were better thought out than the new god powers bestowed on everyone in this movie.
- The obsession with nepotism and bloodlines just doesn't do anything for me. Vader being Luke's father didn't make ESB a superb movie. Apparently no one told JJ Abrahms that.
- This movie lacked any bit of nuance (see comment about Marvel movies) in a very Michael Bay way. The positioning beacon plotline didn't make any sense (mesh networks are too complicated for people who have mastered hyperspace). We don't just have one GPS satellite. But, hey, riding alien horses on a Star Destroyer with explosions is pretty Michael Bay.
- This movie did not succeed in getting me to care about any of these characters or conflicts. Internal conflicts were wiped from the story. I didn't have time to identify with a single character despite sitting through a 2.5 hour movie.
- This movie lacked any sense of purpose for why any character was doing anything. The bad guys motives were not only confusing but stupid. What do you do with a thousand death stars? Keep them in a grid around Exegol I guess? Dispatch a couple and destroy a single planet so that a rebel fleet can form and attack you?
- This movie was bad and Disney/Abrahms should feel bad.

I hope this is the last thing they film/animate of the Star Wars universe.

Quick question, you're complaining about the science behind these movies? I highly doubt 99% of Star Wars fans are watching for space accuracy and science accuracy. Most space based movies are questionable on the science because the science doesn't exist.

Also all big movie franchises now focus on fan service, because fans like that and that's what makes money

I agree the sense of sacrifice is completely gone. They shouldn't have returned CP3Os memory

I'm not arguing with you. I'm allowed to have my standards just like you're allowed to have no standards. For me, personally, my brain is jarred out of stories when kinetic physics break down. When a car seemingly jumps another car for no reason in a Fast and Furious movie, I go "oh, good thing that happened". When someone fires an RPG at a road and the road starts exploding in sections in a Michael Bay movie I go "oh, good thing that happened". In science fiction movies, you can give me faster than light travel without explanation but when kinetic physics breakdown my brain goes "oh, good thing that happened".

You're free to your own standards of science fiction. You can get me to ignore sounds in space when the sounds are awesome and the storytelling is compelling. When you rely on terrible science to support terrible storytelling, I personally can't remain in the story. I don't feel smarter or better than anyone, I just can't help but think what is going to happen next when I see a moon-sized ship crashing into a planet.

I'm glad you enjoyed the movie! Disney will need someone else to sell merch to.

First off, I asked a question so don't attack me saying I have zero standards. I was just asking the reasoning behind it because I was curious on your thinking behind it.

Second off, just because I liked the movie doesn't mean I'll buy the merch. I'm not a hardcore Star Wars fan by any means

Third off, you can't say
"I don't feel smarter or better than anyone" but then say I have no standards because you're coming across completely hypocritical. You have "standards" so in your mind you're better is what that says

I said you're free to have no standards. I didn't say you did or didn't. But I will make the observation that your argument is a slippery slope if anyone draws a line anywhere in the sand for science versus fantasy, your argument can still goad them to ignore science. You gave no line for where science must be observed. None. I didn't attack you, I merely took your argument to the logical conclusion and said you're free to make that argument.

Thanks for calling me a snooty hypocrite though. If you think that makes me feel better than you, then you basically called Star Wars fans stupid: "I highly doubt 99% of Star Wars fans are watching for space accuracy and science accuracy." Star Wars fans are just too stupid to understand 'science accuracy' right?

The movie deals with things such as the force, lightsabers, hyper speed, things that don't exist so the science/fantasy line in Star Wars is incrdibly gray. Star Wars fans are not stupid.

Also if the planet was large enough, the death star, crashing into it right into the water, yes the destruction of life but I'm not sure it would destroy the entire planet.

About Hux, a person underneath giving information/turning is not crazy. Numerous generals from within Germany tried to take down Hitler. General Oster gave plans of invasion to their enemies in the Netherlands.
Brutus turned on Caesar. Turning is more frequent than giving info but it has happened

I apologize as well, I was curious on the reasonings and that's why I had originally asked
