Best Tom Brady card to buy for $5000?
Recently sold off a big card, looking to put the funds into a Brady. To me, $5000 is a lot, so I have to keep the investment side of things into consideration when deciding what card to go with. It can’t be a card that has a risky or poor upside in the future. So my question is, what is the safest card to get for $5000 with the most upside? Thank you for your opinions. The more info I get, the better decision I will make.

When it comes to base cards, I like the Spx. Always felt this card should be more popular than what it is, but even so, it's proven to be the #3 or #4 rookie to get over the last two decades.

I want to get some nice Brady this year, but to be honest I'm dreading the amount of research I'll need to do in order to feel comfortable. There is SO MUCH altered Tom Brady stuff out there, it's ridiculous.

At around $5k, I'd grab the Crown Royale Auto RC. Really just one edge for Evan Mathis to trim. On card auto. No Pats uni, but that (to me) is the only drawback. Not an easy 10, but easy enough that you can sneak in under the $5k for one.
Just three options for an auto'd base RC in an NFL set and the other two will be over budget. If you hate auto's, apologies. |
I actually really like the Donruss posted on the BST
|
I am not a huge RC fan (except for the RC's with autos on them). Just overpriced IMHO. I know I am in the minority but I'd rather get an on-card auto or 1/1 patch than a corresponding RC. Spectra Super Bowl Champ with Inscription comes to mind.
That aside, if I had to recommend an RC at that price point, I'd go with the SPX. |
I’ve always liked the SPX as well. Nice design, fairy limited run to 1350. There was a nice BGS 9.5 that ended last night at $2,900 with subs 10, 9.5, 9.5, 9.5, so we’ll within your range. Only drawback is not in Pats uniform, otherwise a winner.
I also like Leaf Limited, very short run to 350, nice design, Pats uni, and universally recognized as a high end card. Not that many nice examples on EBay at any given time, so may take a little longer to find the right one to buy, and also to find the right buyer on the backend when you sell it. The Spx has him in the same practice UNI as the SP Auth.

if that's the case, and you can't find the Contenders at $5000, then you're next best best is the SP Authentic, hands down. i don't believe it's ever lost value, and i doubt ever will, especially with the folks that cannot afford his Contenders card. thing is, there are a lot of high dollar value Brady rookies, but do you want to buy one of his top 2-3, or one of his top 10-15? i know some are posting about this SPX card, but honestly, i never liked that card. There's just something about it, never liked it. His SP Authentic though, hands down, one of the prettiest rookies he has, a simple yet cool design. but that's me. |
I was recently talking about the SPx because I also like it.
Its got that undeniable UpperDeck printing, and the premium ivory white stock with a rather simple, but stylish design and its serial numbered. SPA is also a good choice, but unless you purchase a lower grade copy, youre paying more than 5k. Leaf limited is also a good choice IMO. Serial'd to 350 and condition sensitive, Patriots uni, but again, with you only having 5k to play with, youll have to buy a lower graded copy. High grade copies are very close to 5, or just over due to scarcity and condition sensitive attributes. Bowman Chrome is popular, but theres a million of them, theyre ugly IMO, and not serial'd, but hes in his Pats uni and available in quantity. You can get a BGS gem 9.5 SPx for 4k though.. I do not ever recommend buying a raw copy of anything 2000 Brady, unless youre damn sure you know what youre looking at. Theres several more releases, but the ones above are primarily the top 5 with Contenders being the pinnacle. Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk |

SpX PSA 10
Out of his price range. SpX is the next best option for approximately 5k unless you're looking at a low grade specimen. Might not be as popular as the SPA, but it's never lost value over time either. |

Tread very carefully on that. |

Op, if you dont know someone personally that is skilled in card review, then i would suggest asking the board here for any purchases youre thinking of making. Make sure to take good pics, so the skilled eyes in this board can take an objective look. Theres more than a few of us who have been collecting Brady rcs for years and have examples to reference, etc.. Other than the clear and present dangers that this involves, I still think Brady rc cards are a lock if you want to invest in cardboard. Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk |

Brady RCs may be #1 most altered cards. If you're investing in slabbed cardboard, you're investing in the holder as much as you are the card. Every dollar in value difference between raw and graded copies is an investment in the grade and the grading company, not the card. |
Man, I was just looking at Brady SPA/SPX and there are so many "authentic" or "altered" copies out there

Mine is in a new slab, I submitted raw personally |
I’d go with the highest grade SPA you can get. If $5000 can say for example get you a PSA 7, at least you know if probably wasn’t altered because if it was altered, you’d see it in a PSA 10 slab. Plus, to me, it being a lower grade doesn’t take away how nice of a card it is all that much. Just like how I’d take any PSA graded Honus Wagner T-206 just because it’s such an iconic/valuable card. Just owning an SP Authentic Brady RC is pretty sweet. Probably his most iconic rookie card, and it should only go up in price in the long run because it’s his most desired base rookie card. And $5k can get a relatively high grade of the card. Not Gem mint or mint, but still pretty nice.

Assuming you haven't sold it, I have not seen it. |

you're probably right, but i just don't like the SPX rookie, never have. something about it. the SP Authentic always stuck out to me. it's a beautiful, yet very simple card. other than that, Momentum, UD Graded, E-X, Rookies and Stars, Donruss, and even Vanguard have stood out to me more than SPX. but that's me, i'm weird i guess. |
