Hobby Mount Rushmore: Jordan, LeBron, Kobe, and _________
Heard this debate somewhere recently, maybe a podcast. But who would you say is the 4th after Jordan, Lebron, and Kobe in terms of holding value/investing/ upside?
Is it Shaq? Duncan? Could it be KD or Curry after we see how the next 2-3 years play out? Other? Or simply no one realistically as of 2020. |
Harry Giles has a very dedicated following in the hobby.

On a serious note; just firing from the hip without any research - Curry and Shaq seem to be good candidates; they each had high peaks and pretty sustained hobby love.

Those 3 are on a different level than everybody else. Giannis is a monster right now, but his prices are based on the upside of what he could do in the future. Same with all the young guys.... Luka, Zion, Simmons, Trae, etc. |
I’m biased as I grew up and reside in the SF Bay Area but #4 for me is Stephen Curry.
He changed how the game is played with his elite shooting. He has great ability to finish around the rim and is an awesome ballhandler. He’s a pretty small guy (in terms of NBA height and physique) yet able to dominate. He’s a great teammate and seems to be a great overall person too (from what I’ve seen via interviews as well as what his non-profit does). He wins my personal vote! |
Duncan and Shaq ‘s ships have sailed
So not them despite their greatness (I collect Duncan) Understanding the gap between 3rd and 4th could be huge... probably Curry and KD Talent wise it should be KD no doubt but lots of people dislike him Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Bird/Magic, two of the greatest on one card.

I'd probably say Curry as well.
Has the mvp's, rings, but most importantly; revolutionized the game. He epitomizes the money ball era. |
Curry Def. MVPs, Rings, Likability (which def matters). If he gets another one..look out.

I'm still shocked Shaq doesn't have a more rabid collector base. I realize the big man was always hobby-hype kryptonite, but he was just a freak of nature.
|
Stephen Curry. KD fans will be telling you he's underpriced for the next 50 years while the rest of us couldn't care less. All six of them can start a club about it. You know how many truly great players don't get the appreciation their fans think they deserve? Like... a lot. That's life. There are mega stars, and then there's everybody else waaaaaaaaaay back in the distance. If you're a fan of one of them, enjoy collecting a more affordable player. Ben Simmons prices are plummeting, and I for one am overjoyed.

I’ve owned a shop for almost 6 years and not one time has anyone come in and said “where’s your Shaq section?” It’s a big section too...collects dust. |
Dennis "The Worm" Rodman

Giannis really just needs a ring to cement his legacy. That's the only thing he's lacking. 2 would make it a pretty easy decision over Curry because of his 2 way ability and what will most likely be a longer stretch of sustained dominance (speculating based off his current age). |

It’s MJ, LeBron and Kobe, then everyone else. Think about it. Are you even able to imagine a scenario where someone knocks one of those 3 off the list? |

Completely agree, as he is an iconic player. Ironically Shaq’s Upper Deck rookie has started to gain some steam. I’ve always thought it’s been one of the most unappreciated cards, but they are starting to take off. The last few PSA 10’s have been in the $750-900 range. |

[/QUOTE] That's a good point. I think the only knock on Curry is his real lack of Finals dominance. I mean his presence alone played a massive factor in those championship wins because it's such a defensive disruption, but he was not like any of those 3 mentioned players on the big stage. |
LoL @ Giannis
We'll see. I have serious doubts. Dude looked bewildered in the only conference finals he made it to. Heavy recency bias. Best of luck getting through Philly in round 2, Toronto in round 3, and then whoever the West throws at him. I'm 97% confident he won't. Meanwhile Curry went to five straight Finals and actually won the damn thing three of those times, and it's not like he retired. GSW will be a nightmare once again soon enough. |
You pretty much nailed it with the modern day Hobby top 3 but I would say Tim Duncan and Stephen Curry prices will continue to rise. Duncan rookie refactors are so cheap right now. You can get a PSA 10 for about $2000 and some change. Curry because he's a generational type of talent and completely changed the game we know today. It is all about 3 point shooting these days in the nba and it is all because of Curry.

Despite Curry's struggles in certain postseason situations, he was still the cog that drove a franchise that dominated for half a decade. |

Si, that's why I emphasized Giannis' 2 way ability above. Curry's a very unique case though. He's such a court spacing disruption and offensive threat that it basically negated his poo defense when the Warriors were rolling. His team value really can't be quantified on paper. |
