1972 Topps Julius Erving RC - Left Elbow Print Defect

Looking to find any information about the print circle that occasionally (normally?) shows up around Dr. J's left elbow. Print defect vs. variation? Why does it not affect the assessed grade for the card?

Public dropbox links to both versions:

It’s a fisheye and it’s very common on the Erving rookie. Honestly, it doesn’t affect the grade too much. I’ve seen 9s with the fisheye. Centering plays a much bigger role with this set. Super hard finding a centered copy.

Yeah, although I disagree with the TPG's stance on this issue, many famous (infamous) print defects - i.e. Namath butterfly PD, Dr. J PD, Bird/Magic PD - aren't held against the final assessment. I hate seeing a PSA 9 Dr. J with that fish eye. That's just me though.

Yes - I completely agree. That is why I was asking. I don't understand why those cards wouldn't be PSA 9 with a PD qualifier.
