I don't think the Jay Chou is very rare, at least compared to the other autographs in the set. He is, however, a super celebrity in Chinese speaking countries - I would say similar to Justin Timberlake, but with many, many more hit songs.

I believe Rittenhouse released 500 of the Jay Chou autographs.
I was actually looking at that a week or two ago. I have Seth Rogan and figured I would pick up some of the other cards. I had never heard of Jay Chou and assumed he was minor star that would be cheap to grab. NOPE. I bet there are a lot of people who have a Jay Chou autograph in their collection but don't know how valuable it is. |
Wow on the Chou -- I was trying to find a value a few months ago and couldn't find any sales. . . can't believe it is this high. These always seemed tougher to find than the Rogen.
Probably by biggest hobby screw up was trading an Emma Watson OOTP redemption (still redeemable) for about $350 worth of sketches. It was a fair trade at the time, but man I wish I just redeemed that Watson. |
The Emma Watson is still redeemable?

Stimulus checks may have something to do with high autograph sales. I know I blew mine on autographs, LOL. Also, tax refunds. I would expect a lot of collectible prices to trend downward over the next year unless the economy improves. A lot of people are having to liquidate collections as they lose employment. I've noticed Rick & Morty autograph sales are up this month, but I think that's because the show is back on the air. It's kind of like how sports autographs sell for more when that sport is in season and go down in the off season when less people are thinking about them. |

I was looking at Ed's ebay store and thought it was the Rogen auto that was commanding the price. Checked a couple of more listings and it seem that Chou's auto is about 4 times Rogen's auto. |

Was it the same card? |
Were there 2 versions of this card? It seems they're both from the POA set.

The live auction card is from the Update set . The one that finished at $2138 is from the first set . |
Indeed. There are supposed to be less than 50 copies of the first card, while the update card had a print run of about 150 copies.

That must have been the luckiest break I ever had . Bought three cases of the original set and pulled two Emma Watson's :D . Kept one and sold the other within a week for $1000 which was half what the three cases cost . My luck ran out on the update set when I bought six cases and did not get any of the big three :( . |

Sounds like a fun break! Pity that I wasn’t collecting when these came out so I’ve had to get my fix from the second hand market. I currently have one last PoA update box left unopened. |
Any reason these Emma are 2k and the others are around 1k?
|
Probably because these are the first cards she signed. So kinda like her rookie auto?

This is correct. That s her very first autograph card, so more desirable. All of Emma’s auto are over 1k now, wow. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I think that's about right although it was 16 years ago ! I got them from the main UK wholesale company Cards Inc ( sadly long since shut down ) . They were a real big player at the time and bought enough of the run that Artbox did UK exclusive costume cards for them . It was Artbox's first proper release and I remember the boxes being feast or famine with as many as three hits in some boxes and none in others when it was supposed to be one hit per box of either auto , costume , or prop . Thus you should be careful buying single boxes as it could be a very expensive dud . |
Does the feast or famine thing apply to the PoA update boxes too? If so, with my luck, I’m probably holding on to a sealed dud box lol
|
I hear that comic books and sports cards, especially Basketball, but recently overshadowed by a Mike Trout "1 of 1" signed Baseball card bought in 2018 for $400k that the guy sold for nearly $4 million 2 years later in 2020.
So, hearing that the non-sports sector is surging makes sense, especially the high end material like the autographs. The best way to buy signed cards, are when they're authenticated if not pack/company issued signatures, or if they are company certified, having them graded. Beckett (BGS) is the best grading company because they don't only grade the card, but grade the autograph signature, which is important in the autograph hobby. It's graded on a 10 point schedule. They grade varied aspects like ink density, completeness (if the signature trails off the card or sticker or is signed with skipping). fading, and other aesthetics. Many collectors want that "perfect specimen" aka "Prime example" of a signature, so that "10" grade helps validate it for future valuation. |

Yes. The PoA update is the highest production of all HP cards. Autograph cards are 1-2 per case. But this set does contain the holy grail triple autograph, each of the three stars single autograph cards and no redemption i believe. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
