Lewis Hamilton “rookie card” to own?

What in your opinion will be the go to card for Hamilton? Do you consider his Topps Now card #3 to be the best as it was the first and limited print run? Or the to be released Topps Chrome? Obviously the dynasty patch autos are very nice and rare but I’ve never considered dynasty to be true rcs in baseball.

The Topps now cards are steadily increasing in value and will only blow up more once their season starts this Sunday. I’m curious to see how chrome will sell as well can’t wait!

2006 Futera
2009 SI for kids
2009 Top Trumps Sporting Heroes
2020 Topps Now #3

I think #3 will remain "the" card, especially if the Chrome mockups are true and it's a car picture compared with the great photo on #3. With how memorable race moments can be I can see Topps Now continuing to be very popular for F1, and the #3 card is just a nice card all around.

FWIW Turbo Attax was released by Topps late last year (possible before #3 even?) and has some cool Hamilton foils as well. Cheap at the moment since it's a game aimed at kids but anything Hamilton can/will be appealing. Those are also the only cards he'll be in a white Mercedes race suit, interestingly enough.

2006 Futera, the set isn't even listed on Futera's website, so that Lewis card (GP2) will always be very hard to find

Ah that’s interesting. I had not considered those older releases. I’m thinking more along mainstream brands. For example tiger woods had the SI card and that larger black bordered card (can’t remember brand) but the ones that took off were the Upper Deck released cards. Not sure how everyone thinks

2006 Futera almost impossible to find

paperzach 03-22-2021 11:42 AM

Topps Now #3 is the strongest candidate for a mainstream "rookie" so far.

Chrome will be the first traditional, pack-pulled "rookie," but who knows what the market will decide on that. Dynasty certainly isn't a mainstream option, nor are Turbo Attax or the stickers.

The 2006 Futera card is cool, but it's a GP2 card and is excessively rare, so it might be something to chase for completists, but it won't ever be the "go to" card for anybody. Prices on that one will probably be very high, but total production of the entire product was 40 cases, so it's functionally imaginary.

SI Kids... We have the Tiger Woods example. 1996 SI Kids can sell big, but the 2001 card is still generally considered his rookie.

Chrome. It wont even be close. Chrome/Prizm is king.

This "argument" was settled almost 40 years ago....1984 Star Jordan vs 1986 Fleer Jordan.

fadster 03-22-2021 02:02 PM

I'd want something historically apt so either the 2006 Futera, 2007 Pro2.0 or Bravo Sport.

StikiLouda 03-22-2021 02:12 PM

I can say with certainty it should definitely not be the Pro2.0. People that don't know any better are getting worked over by those ridiculous listings on ebay. They are unauthorized/unlicensed cards

Chrome's delay hurt it's chances, while Topps is working on getting it out the door the market has spoken on #3s

Topps Chrome is 2021 product, if you want his first topps, it is Topps NOw #3

I think chrome is advertised as a 2020 product ... even though it’s to be released in April

Yeah I know it's unlicensed and it's the least appealing of his old cards (which is really saying something given the poor choice) but on balance I'm not sure I'd take the #3 over it. But that's just me and I'm not foolish enough to think there are many other collectors who would do the same.

That's fair! I do think some people who don't know any better are buying them for more than they should purely out of FOMO with F1 on the rise, but if you know what you're in for more power to you

fadster 03-22-2021 03:55 PM

What will be interesting to see is if Chrome cards of the F2 drivers in the upcoming set (eg a Prema Mick Schumacher) end up being treated as rookie cards or not. If they do that might put more weight behind the Futera Hamilton further down the line.

StikiLouda 03-22-2021 04:05 PM

Topps did put RC badges on the couple of F2 drivers that had a F1 race debut, but did not put an RC badge on the "Mick wins the F2 championship" card.

I imagine they're treating like minor league cards. Just sucks that in a sport like baseball you have enough players to make a checklist without throwing minor leaguers in the packs hahaha

IMO Topps now #3 is the rookie card

Any particular reason? Or just your opinion? I’ve been wondering why the si for kids card isn’t getting the same type of love that naomi or tiger’s cards have seen. Dont get me wrong, they’ve been rising, but not as high as I would’ve thought.

I heard the drivers are from 2021 season , not 2020 as Topps Dynasty

Personally I feel the Topps International Hall of Fame is the only rookie for Osaka. I guess I’m old school and prefer the main brands.

Hi

Trying to do a bit more research on the pro 2.0 and came across this thread, I have a chance to buy a good handful of mint pro2.0 Hamilton’s. Anyone have an idea or a guess In The true value of these?(what would u be looking to pay for 10-20 cards) There is very few that have sold or are listed currently on eBay. Is it that rare of a card or are people holding and none getting listed? Thx for any insight

paperzach 04-08-2021 10:18 AM

Let us know if you find anything in your research. I think they're worth $0.

How much is toilet paper in your area, and how many wipes do you think you could get with a pro2.0 card? I'd say do that math and you'll get the value

Chrome is King

Litwing 04-10-2021 06:30 AM

chrome just like prizm.

Kobe, lebron rc in chrome are the highest price.
Now is just like hoops. Also an rc but not worth as much as chrome.

fadster 04-10-2021 08:23 AM

In terms of NOW vs Chrome base I expect NOW to hold value. The "chrome is king" effect is a bit less strong with non-us centric sports where there is no heritage, eg you can see the effect in soccer often the early card/sticker release sticks as the one. Chrome is still as safe a brand as you can get, it's just at base (and even refractor level) it sometimes has to take a backseat. Secondly the NOW has had a long time to establish itself, there are enough graded copies out there changing hands to establish a baseline. Lastly now we have seen Chrome there may be too many different Hamilton's, diluting the appeal a bit.
