NBA/Soccer comps for collectors looking to crossover into soccer cards
Some of you may have noticed the soccer market has been hot lately. More and more people are seeing the potential. I collect both soccer and basketball so friends and other collectors ask me who they should invest in. I made the list to give people an idea. It's a pretty good beginners guide but as always do your own research.
These are strictly hobby comps not physical comps. i comped old guys to old guys and young to young and factored in things like proven vs all potential, titles etc. I posted this on IG and a couple people brought up Haaland should be comped to Zion. I think that is fair. I chose Luka because he and Haaland are both setting modern card price records and Luka is a little more proven than Zion so far. There really isn't a good comp for MBappe as he is so young and has actually won something unlike the young NBA guys. Soto and Mahomes are his best comps IMO. If anyone has any questions about soccer cards let me know. |
Cool to see this! I've been picking up a lot of Ronaldo, Messi and Pele just because I don't know a lot about soccer but see there's still a ton of room to grow with how scarce all their stuff is.
What's a good comp for Neymar? Seems like he's great but no one talks about him. |

So, who's the MJ equivalent? Pele?

No soccer card expert here, but to the extent you're talking about someone who becomes a star in the '80s and is championed by some as the GOAT peak player, that would be Diego Maradona. |
At the same time though, Maradona is pretty overlooked/undervalued because of off the field issues.
I think in terms of being “THE” guy of the hobby and also being considered the GOAT by many, Pele is the best equivalent to MJ despite the two being from different eras imo. |
Can you compare them to their Pokemon equivalents? Thanks.

havertz = kevin huerter
|
Alex Morgan = Dennis Rodman
|
Neymar = Durant

They were one step above the next level of great players and you could make a case for either. I personally prefer not to rank one over the other; they both deserved a place at the top. With Messi & Ronaldo approaching the end of their careers, I think most fans of the sport would also now state they have earned a place alongside Pele & Maradona at the top of a great players list. Everyone keeps talking about the 'next Messi' or the 'next Ronaldo' but in reality we will like to see their like again in the next 20/30 years. [Oh and we Brits hate the term 'soccer', as we call it football. (NFL) football is called 'American Football' over here. :o ] |

Do you know if Pulisic has taken a big dip? I know he was huge, but has been benched for a while and rumors of him leaving. Zion has been trending up a bit
|
The entire list is wrong, ronaldo is actually similar to lebron for his atheltic ability and longevity, in career wise they both ( messi and ronaldo) have the same achievements and are similarly respected. pele and maradona will be above them as they have won worldcups and were voted as the most poplar players in the 20th century.
Mbapppe and Haaland are the future stars but all the american players listed( pulisic, reyna, mckennie ) will never go that high in the list. |

Yes and so has Zion. Pulisic will trend up as soon as WC qualifiers start as we saw with the latest friendly. |

Kobe and Lebron are the kings of modern day and are pretty close in value like Messi and Ronaldo. The Americans in the hobby go for a way bigger premium than their actual performance. It will only get higher as WC qualifiers start into the World Cup. |

But still better than the previous american teams. |

I’m not a huge Messi fan, but Messi is/will be MJ in soccer. |

Funnily enough, even in Argentina he is still not as revered as Maradona. He is an exceptionally gifted player, has multiple personal awards, League & European titles, but unfortunately, his lack of a World Cup victory will be held up against him. Maradona almost single handedly won the 1986 World Cup for Argentina, with a much weaker group of teammates compared to Messi in 2014 or 2018. Messi has been imperious in a Barcelona shirt, but the weakest of the other three potential GOATs in an international one. |
