Why can’t football get overtime right?

Chiefs fans were happy with the walk off score tonight, but not so much in the AFCCG a few years back. Ridiculous that both teams don’t get the opportunity to possess the ball in the pros, and ties shouldn’t be happening.

College ball had it way better until this 2pt conversion malarkey starting after second OT.

I get that they want to limit the length of games, but at what cost? Who wouldn’t have wanted to watch Herbert get the chance to answer that score?

Is there a better way?

ToppsFB 12-17-2021 01:49 AM

Just play 10 minutes of OT. If tied, play 10 more minutes, repeat till not tied.

I guess you didn’t watch that garbage Steelers vs lions game earlier this year. Nobody asking for 10 more minutes of that game.

You gotta endure the Steelers/Lions to be blessed with the Chiefs/Chargers

Agreed on ties, need a better system there. But I'm a fan of the TD-and-done rule that's in place. If you can't stop the other team from driving the field and scoring a TD, you don't deserve to win the game. Both teams has 4 quarters to take control, and the OT period is meant to get a winner ASAP.

Both teams have an opportunity to possess the ball.

The first opportunity is the coin flip. This is luck.

The second opportunity is the team on defense. This is play calling and execution.

Both opportunities can come to naught and you can lose without being on offense, but that is different than not having the opportunity.

The team likely also had many opportunities to not send the game into OT over the previous 60 minutes. It’s really all perspective.

The first opportunity being luck is where the buck stops. Leaving a game, potentially a season, playoff seeding, etc, to a coin flip is mundane.

The execution factor favors the offense a majority of the time. That game almost assuredly came down to which offense won the coin flip as neither team is known for a staunch defense/execution.

Alas, opportunities aside, do you like the overtime rules?

To that point in the game, the team had opportunities before luck to win it. Likely multiple. When you don’t execute when given the opportunities often times your chances are determined by things out of your control, i.e. bad bounces, bad calls. That’s on you for not taking caring of the chances already given.

I like the rules. If you can’t win in 60, you should not be granted a possession just because. Hope the coin flip goes your way and if not, stop the other team. It’s not anything abnormal from the rest of the game.

The old College overtime was not that great but its definitely better than the new one. I never liked the starting at the 25 for every drive.

So no rewards for a team that say overcomes a three score deficit in the second half due to "bad bounces" in the first half?

Congrats offense on putting up 21 in the fourth quarter, now go watch your defense lose the game because you lost the coin toss!

mikee1186 12-17-2021 09:40 AM

The NFL is about more than just offense, and the current overtime rules force teams to showcase a strong defense. The Chargers had a perfectly good opportunity to win the game in overtime, but their defense let the Chiefs march down the field for an easy winner.

No. You would be changing the game completely be awarding possessions as “rewards”.

The game often comes down to luck, play calling and execution. Can’t do it in 60, as a team, no rewards.

Except the team that wins the coin toss, they're rewarded.

Luck. Just like at the beginning of the game. Then you can choose what strategy you want to employ based on how your team is playing. You don’t have to take possession to start OT. Nothing abnormal for the game.

But again, your statement was about giving a possession because a team did something remarkable. That’s would be revolutionary.

Good play, hey get a free possession.

foleylion08 12-17-2021 09:48 AM

Solution: get rid of the coin toss, in overtime you play rock, paper, scissors . At least don't make one team a spectator in their fate.

SaintsFan4Life 12-17-2021 09:49 AM

It was a great game. Had it not been for a freak player accident. The chargers had a TD.
Then the Chargers had 2 more opportunities for field goals they chose not to try.
That’s 13 points left on field before regulation ended. You can’t blame bad defense as the reason the Chargers lost. It wasn’t like the Chiefs/Chargers were scoring every time they had the ball. I agree with the way they do overtime now. The only thing they can do better for overtime is getting rid of a tied game.

foleylion08 12-17-2021 09:52 AM

The "luck" implications of the coin toss at the beginning of the game are almost inconsequential as you're all but guaranteed a dozen or more possessions over the course of regulations.

Also, you say revolutionary like it's a bad thing. The forward pass was revolutionary at one point.

therealcjc33 12-17-2021 09:52 AM

If the NFL really cared about player safety, then they should get rid of overtime. If it ends in a tie at the end of regulation, just call it a tie and move on.

If they want overtime, put it on the feet of the kickers. Let them have their moment! lol

The overtime rule is great if your team gets the ball first and scores.
The overtime rule is terrible if your team loses the coin toss and the other team scores.

It worked last night for Chiefs fans.

Two years ago the chiefs thread was 4 pages of people raging about the overtime rules because they lost to the Patriots. It would have been that way last night too if the Chargers had won the coin toss and scored a TD.

There's just not a lot of Chargers fans here to complain about it, just Hebert fans.

Not making a case for the Chargers "deserving" a win in the least bit. Making the case that the overtime rules overwhelmingly favor the winner of a game of luck a la the coin toss. I'd have started the same discussion if LA had won the toss and Herby tossed the winning score.

The last thing I want to see during an incredible game is kickers going back and forth.

The NFL doesn't care about player safety. They care about making it look like they care.

If you score a FG the other team gets the ball.:)!

Oh i know lol. I was just joking about all that. I would change that each team is able to possess the ball regardless if the first team on offense scores a touchdown.

WillBBC 12-17-2021 09:57 AM

Chargers left at least 6 (9) points on the board last night. I love the aggressiveness but sometimes it comes back to bite you.

blockedbyjames 12-17-2021 09:57 AM

You give up a TD in OT you deserve to lose. You give up a FG then you should get an opportunity with the ball. There's nothing wrong with the OT rules.
