Long term potential of 20/21 SP Signature Legends?
 

I'm torn on what the future holds for this product. All players are retired, so there can be no "pop" to value, other than someone passing away, unless one of them who isn't already in the HOF gets voted in. That being said, you have a pool of potential collectors that also consists of those who are fans of the teams in general, not just the players, and these are many of the best of the best from over the years, so this fuels the nostalgia fire. And that pool of collectors runs older, meaning they have more income to spend. The FWAs are very limited; however, once those cards are in the hands of collectors will there be more demand since, as noted, these are not active players? Or is the fact they're so limited ensure they'll be always sought after? I wonder if sealed might be the best way to go, because any box - or case - can hold the potential for one of the jackpot cards down the road.

Other thoughts?

I think it depends also on if remains a one shot deal or if you'll start to see it again. The value of the historic FWAs is they are unique, even for guys who have a lot of other autos from prior years. But if every other year you see the same guys with more autos,.that would be bad

If they repeat the product with a new design, there actually might be some upward movement on the "original set" while the newer cards will not fetch the same premiums you're seeing now. I don't think it's the kind of product you'd want to make annually, but maybe once every 5 years or so.
I am somewhat surprised at how strong the prices are on some of these.

i am believer on this set long term, yes all of the players have multiple autos from different set from different years, but how many of them are of photos from their early days/ debut year of their careers ? (although some photos were pointed to be incorrect)

For example, i dont think there are much Forsberg/ Sakic autos in their Quebec Nordiques uniforms.

between the set collectors + PC collectors, they are a must have.

These for the most part are not very expensive cards, whatever happened to collect what you like, this hobby has changed so much in the last 3 to 5 years.... not sure its for the better

2012-13 Panini Classics has (IMHO) a better design for an all retired-player set....

If it is a one-off, the /49s and some of the /99s will hold strong values I'd imagine- Future Watch branding helps a ton. It's a fairly different vet/legend auto compared to others that don't have that Future Watch branding.

There's just not enough of the /49s and /99s for all of the collectors out there who would want one - that alone would keep values elevated regardless of the investor/flipper types.

If they ever did another release there are some /49 omissions that would be fun - just don't know if they are omissions because they passed on round 1. Pavel Bure, Paul Kariya, Sergio Federov, Scott Stevens - guys like that. If you waited 5 years you'd also have some recent retirees.but they'd already have true FWAs

I don’t think Sergei or Kariya are signing anything. Kariya for sure. 99% sure on Fedorov.

He's pissed at the NHL. During his playing days it was basically open season on giving him concussions and they never did anything about it. Kariya playing in todays NHL would make McDavid look like a chump.

Scott Stevens would be in prison. I don’t get how he made the NHL 100. Total slug and hated leaguewide except for The Garbage State.

Regional bias if SS smoked your star player- I get it.
Stevens was definitely a menace but he he stood up and fought all comers. That was the game back then.
But pretty rich for Flyers' fans to cry about any of their top guys getting assaulted.

Not a lot of retired sets are made now. I feel that this product can become a classic, with set builders fighting for the SPs.

Chronology had past and current players mixed together. SP Legends is entirely alumni.
