Chris Simms top 40 QBs for 2023

Always look forward to this analysis. I find Simms to be one of the more knowledgeable analysts out there when it comes to football. I don't always agree with him, but he's certainly on a different level than clickbait guys like Skip Bayless, Screamin A Smith, ect.

Anyways, here's his Top 40 QBs. I'm sure it'll rile a few people up, but let's see what people think about some of the more questionable placements:

Yeah, I like Simms and he's always been a Mahomes/Chiefs fan. I watched his countdown this year and I'd agree with pretty much most of it.

Lamar over Jalen seems to have ruffled some feathers. Although Simms is spot on with his analysis. Lamar is definitely better than Jalen.

2023 is a Make or Break year for Russell Wilson.

Mac Jones over Tua and Baker over Purdy are the ones that stick out to me

longhornjunkie 06-09-2023 10:14 AM

Hate to say this, but I think Tua should be higher. What am I missing?

And the category for him and Fields is stupid. Aren't their arrows pointing up? Actually, all the categories are stupid. They belong in "what's your ceiling?" but certainly not as high as the other guys there.

Major Applewhite still > Simms

If Watson is the 9th best QB in the NFL?

Browns will be scary

Write that down

majestik101 06-09-2023 11:06 AM

Baker ahead of Purdy and Ridder is dead last.

I approve of the ranking.
Mac Jones over Tua and Baker over Purdy are the ones that stick out to me
In 2022 (min 300 pass attempts) baker ranked 378 out of 384 for passing success rate since 2012. 35.8% (avg since 2015 is 45.7%).

This ranks below 2012 Blaine Gabbert, 2014 Blake Bortles and both Zach Wilson years.

He should be no higher than 35 on this list.

Eckstein197 06-09-2023 11:17 AM

Seems decently solid, few things that stuck in out

Watson is too high for what he showed last season. I’d put him down in the mid teens until he proves he can play at that high level again. We haven’t seen it in 3 years essentially

Jalen over Herbert

Max over Tua seems a little crazy

Jordan Love should be a bit higher, I’d take him over someone like Huntley easily

I don’t think Ridder should be last but I understand

longhornjunkie 06-09-2023 11:25 AM

Tannehill seems high but I can't justify moving him too far aside from bumping Tua and maybe Purdy up.

On his Podcast, Simms does a breakdown of each player and spends a good amount of time on each of the top 4. His breakdown of Herbert is interesting.

He gives Herbert his own category: The Machine. He points out the mechanically and fundamentals wise, Herbert is one of the most talented QBs to play. But he's just missing that big moment, or the ability to make magic happen the way that the top 3 guys are able to. And I believe that, too. I did some film study on Herbert last season, and I really do think he might be the best thrower of the football in the pocket in the NFL. He makes a handful of throws a game that few in the NFL can. It's just about the intangibles that he's missing right now.

I agree on Herbie. However, it would also probably help if he had a head coach who didn't make bone headed decisions late in the game and his wide receivers weren't always dealing with injuries.

But yeah, intangibles.

He’s the only guy on the list with both starting experience and a 0.00% INT rate.

SleeperCards 06-09-2023 11:55 AM

Did he choose the font for that graphic? Definitely can't have much faith in whoever did.

You don’t like Comic Simms?

And that's the big question: "Can the Chargers organization and Herbert ever get it together enough to be great?"

Is it weird to find a font incredibly off-putting? No matter what information was provided it wouldn't be taken seriously. Didn't an NBA owner post an official memo in comic sans once?

Jalen over Herbert

You'd put Jalen over Herbert? I'm not even sure if I'd put him in Top 10. We'll see what this year brings.

Not at all.

Presentation is just about equally important to content.

OK, I'll bite. Can you list the 10 QBs you'd put ahead of Hurts if he's not in your top 10?

If the refs had called the Super Bowl consistently, there’s a good chance people would have Hurts up with Burrow and Allen.

Now that Rodgers is on the Jets. Eight of the top Nine and the top six are all in the AFC. I mentioned before, the NFL has a QB balance problem. Opportunity for middling NFC QBs like Goff, Prescott, and Cousins to make playoff noise. The other side is going to have hobby collectors crying - Mahomes, Allen, Herbert, Burrow, Tlaw, and even Jackson are all hyped to win Super Bowls. That is six QBS for only 2 AFC champ spots and 1 Super Bowl spot. A couple of those guys won't ever get there even though they are good enough. Big paydays against the cap are coming.

I don't think Sims' list is all that bad. Couple of nits to pick and swap around a few guys, but it seems pretty solid.

3-4 years from now not all of those QBs are considered top 10 anymore. Just the way it's going to go once the salary cap hits level the playing field. Some will play at a high level regardless, others will fall into mediocrity.

Top 8 are good.

Not sure about Watson (not a knock, truly not sure given all his troubles, time off, the "Browns" of it all)

Not sure about Russell Wilson. He should be better with Payton, but... I don't know, he looked SO bad last year. So, so bad.

The middle group you could # any way you want and I wouldn't argue too hard.

I mentioned earlier how terrible Baker was.

In that same list, here are others in the lowest 25 over the past 10 yrs from 22:

360- fields
371- mills
374- russ
376- zach wilson

This is probably terrible news for him, but I genuinely think he's going explode this season. Along with Payton, I think Davis Webb will be a coaching phenom and now he'll be in Russ's ear as his new QB coach.

That reminds me, I need to pick up a decent Wilson chrome RC.....
