MLB Needs To Fix The All-Star Game NOW!

I am getting so sick and tired of every year the top All-Stars that people paid to see (and voted for!) suddenly come down with an "injury" and say they can't make it to the All-Star Game and some player that the majority of casual fans have no idea who they are then have to take their place on the roster. Take a look at yesterday's All-Star rosters. Numerous players that no one knows or cares about. Most of the stars and studs in MLB that people love to see did not play yesterday and sat at home instead. This is turning the best All-Star Game in sports into a joke.

What needs to be done by MLB? Starting next year immediately, the winner of the All-Star game gets home field advantage in the World Series. Make the game mean something again. Part of the problem is that the All-Star game is meaningless which encourages more players to sit out and stay at home. If the winner gets home field advantage, then more players will want to participate, especially if that player is playing for a team that is in a playoff run.

Punishment for players that sit out the All-Star game will be a fine and a short suspension... UNLESS they have a legitimate injury, and they physically can't play.

My fellow MLB players, you're getting paid millions of dollars to play a game of baseball. So, the least you can do is show up and help your league win the game.

Don’t watch it then?? No skin off their back

Drew3000 07-12-2023 06:04 PM

Better idea, just end the all-star game altogether. It’s not needed

asujbl 07-12-2023 06:04 PM

TLDR

It’s an AS game

yep when they introduced inter league play the AS Game lost all meaning. Now it's just a glorified ego pump with no incentive.

Same thing that happened with the Pro Bowl in the NFL once the players started getting paid huge contracts and all of a sudden teams and the players to a certain extent didn't want to risk injury for a meaningless game.

The All Star game used to be a fun event to see players who would never meet during the regular season go head to head. Now it’s meaningless.

“Fellow” mlb players, who you play for?

They get played to help their team win the World Series, not win the AllStar game.

They tried that already. Didn’t work. It was a bad idea then, and it’s a bad idea now.

fulltritty 07-12-2023 06:50 PM

It just needs to go away. Let the players spend that time with their families and rest for the second half. With interlegue play. It's now meaningless.

itsbaytime 07-12-2023 06:52 PM

Veruca, is that you?

zworykin 07-12-2023 06:52 PM

Or... no.

Wrong. The Pro Bowl has always been a meaningless game. It used to be played after the Super Bowl! More players should have been opting out instead of going to Hawaii and playing Flag Football in the sand.

1st and 2nd year player showcase - HR Derby and Game. Name the All-Stars for the leagues, but play the game with the youngsters.

He is backkk!!!!!

I'm trying to figure out which players faked injuries to get out of playing. And also, outside of a couple of substitute relievers, which replacements he didn't know.

oplum29 07-12-2023 07:56 PM

i don't watch the all-star game, because it's boring.

and the HR derby too.

i think people will always remember the old HR Derby's when you got 10 outs, and could actually enjoy these mammoth bombs that were hit, but now, you rarely see the actual HR because they happen so fast.

that's why people will always remember Josh Hamilton's HR Derby in NY, or McGwire's in Boston, rather than anything won under this new format.

I didn’t realize there was this much disdain for the ASG. I love it, always have. It’s an exhibition featuring the best players in the world. Some dudes are hurt and can’t play. The end.

base set 07-12-2023 08:44 PM

I thought Yandy Diaz was a futbol player and “Doval” was PGA tour.

jplarson 07-12-2023 09:12 PM

I take it the playoffs got fixed then? Or is the ASG higher priority now?

jlzinck 07-12-2023 09:14 PM

Thanks Karen

sandyfrank 07-12-2023 09:44 PM

I miss when the players wore their actual team uniforms and caps. That was always so cool to see!

JWBlue 07-13-2023 12:14 AM

I always loved the ASG. It was better when it was actually a game and not an exhibition. In the past the players seemed to want to win and took it seriously. Now not so much.

One change I would make is remove any team association on the uniform. Only league identifiers on the uniform. That may create more meaning for the player when they are part of a different team now.

Cut the roster size down. This isn't Little League where everyone needs a participation trophy. Make it a serious honor again to be voted.

and how many of us are 'paying' to see the top stars in the game according to him??

BostonNut 07-13-2023 08:07 AM

Have you bagged Amy yet???
